Importing players from text files...?

Am posting this here because am not sure if this is a bug or if I am missing something.

Why don't some player's import? There are no errors, they just don't get imported. Sometimes though they do import on subsequent attempts, without changing any settings. Once, it appeared they hadn't been imported, I restarted the game, and there they were. Mostly though they just don't import.

Q re the lahman data - if a player is in a master file but does not have a lahman, for example he may just have a minor league id, what other ways are there to import him?

Sort of. Here's the process I've gone through to import my old history of my league:

1. Go to Game > Game Settings > League Settings > Export Player Stats. This creates files in the import_export folder of your league with all player stats.

2. Go to Transactions > Free Agents. Select Actions > Create Fictional Players. Click Create Player(s). Note the name that is created.

3. Go to the search box and find this new player. Click on Editor. Change all of his attributes to the player you want to import. Name, height, birthday/place, face type, playing attributes, etc. Note the player's PlayerID.

4. Go find the player_batting_stats.txt or player_pitching_stats.txt or player_fielding_stats.txt files, open them up with Excel or Libre Office Calc or whatever (even Notepad should work, but it's a big comma-separated file). Add lines for your new guy for each year of stats you want to show up. Use the PlayerID from step three as the first field in each line.

5. Save the file as a CSV file with the same name as before in the same place.

6. Go back to Game > Game Settings > League Settings > Import Player Stats.

You should have your guy in the game. Not exactly like importing a MLBer straight from the dB, but kind of. And I don't think there's another way to do it.

You can import the player using the BBrefMinorsID from the MiLBMaster.csv in the stats folder. Just enter that in the field where you'd put the Lahman ID, enter a season and make sure the 'Include player(s) in minor league database' box is checked.

So basically I am using the import tool the game provides to import multiple players at a time. What I described in the op was that experience. This is what it looks like (clicking the 'import' button enters the players in the txt file, in this case, to the draft pool):

It's been a few years for me so I need a reminder here.

Let's say I want to change information for my human manager and nothing else. So I export stats, open up human_managers.csv under import_export/csv, and make the changes.

How do I reimport the information so that it reflects in the game? Do I choose "import players stats" from League Settings/Functions? Or does that only handle import from the three batting/pitching/fielding text files?

Why "player(s)" for a field that allows only single entries?

No, not at all. I have a league that's been going on since 1988. I spent many, many hours transitioning to OOTP2 in 2000. But a lot never made it over. So this month I've been following that exact process to import hundreds of players from the 1988-1999 timeframe so they now exist in the history tabs of my league in OOTP. Batters are done, pitchers next.

The button works for both single player entries using the text fields and a batch load which I believe is why they put 'player(s)' on it.

Based on the image you posted, you're in the right place and using batch import, so to get minor leaguers, just use the player's minor league ID. You can mix & match the minor ID with the lahman IDs in the same file. You can even use the minor ID for guys who do have lahman IDs because the game recognizes both. Just make sure the minor league database box is checked on so it finds those guys.

Ahhh…. Yes, I think I read another thread about that. Ok, but you must realize that is, at least I think that must be, pretty exceptional. But it got me to thinking more about how I wanted to develop a league, and likely taking more time with it may make for a richer experience. Though what you recommend is way beyond my patience.

I wasn't referring to the import button. I was referring to the checkbox immediately below the text field for single imports. It isn't clear where it belongs nor what its function is.

It still isn't working. I chose a few milb ids, put them in a text file, checked "include player(s) in minor league database" and "import into draft pool", the process runs, triggers "success!" pop up, I go to the draft pool and.... nada. Not there. I tried without checkmarking minors db, and same thing.

[EDIT] Actually it was my brain. Yes! It is working now with milbs. Thanks, legendsport!! This is going to provide a lot more options with designing leagues.

Sorry bud, you were asking me? Often my frame of mind when I ask a question here is more geared for "whack me over the head the solution 2x4" than subtleties.

To answer your question it only handles players stats. Re the coach editing, you could do that through the coach edit functions. But I did take an interesting tour through some folders and files. I'm glad you asked.

Ya but I don't know what I'm doing.

Anyway, I
  • exported data to csv files from database tools
  • changed human manager data
  • then looked for a way to import changes....

Importing via league functions seems to work with only the text files exported from same, which are different from those exported via database tools.

Still looking for where this can be imported, but....
