New to the game

Looks very cool. I can see I will be getting OOTP 18 too.

What is the best way to play do you think? Pitch by pitch or one pitch?

Also, any other tips for the best, more realistic gameplay would be appreciated.

Thanks!

To many variables and you'll have to decide what you really want. Some just sim through the seasons and make trades, take care of finances etc. without ever watching a game. Some watch a few games as GM, some watch all games, some play as manager and play one pitch and some play pitch by pitch.
Your play mode will also depend on if your mostly interested in playing a single season in a few months or dou you want to go through several seasons in a months time. There are many ways to play the game and there is one correct or incorrect way to play. Over time you will play a variety of ways.

when i first got the game i played games out... i don't do that nowadays... sometimes in the playoffs, if i feel like it.

personal preference - so try it many ways and find the one way(s) you like best. don't limit yourself over something arbitrary.

"Any other tips for the best, more realistic gameplay would be appreciated" is a bit vague for me. What do you mean? What sorts of things do you want in order to have a best, more realistic gameplay experience? Can you be more specific?

I've just starting playing ootp also. I'm about a week into having this and it is mind blowing everything you have to look at and do. It's great. I'm playing as a GM for the Indians. Doing a real MLB league. How I play is, after I complete my day, I go to live scores and Start Real-Life Simulation (factor 60) and watch all the days score play out and then look at the box scores for the day. For me, it gives me that end of the day break of staring at numbers and player's and finances etc. It also helps me see if things are playing realistic around the league.

Only advice I can give as a new guy also is, don't rush it. Make sure you are looking at everything you want to see till it all starts getting familiar.

I guess just how to get the most fun out of it. It's kind of overwhelming. I am figuring things out as I go.

depends on what you like.... i've always enjoyed "franchise" versions of games growing up. i like a long history of enough players to make viewing leaderbords, accomplishments, teams, managers all that statistical history and see who did the best in what etc.etc..... i want my team and my players to be prevalent.

some, like forme95, enjoy the day-to-day stuff more than the long-term picture. neither way is better or more entertaining... just preference. for me a break isn't at the end of a day, it's a much larger chunk of the calendar.

if i can't do a whole season, i'll sim to the draft - maybe complete it if i have time, etc... or maybe i'll get to the end of regular season. i just make sure the rotation goes in teh order i want and change depth charts/lineups for injuries. (gm-legacy mode, the hired coach does the rest). i intend to get ~50 seasons out of a league, i can't be real-time simming it

i start 2-3 leagues a year, but not all of them reach maturity of 50+ seasons. the more i create, the more i end early for soem reason or another, typically.

I also put a ton of tme into creation - although not the artistic part of it like team names and logos. more about balance and a fair schedule not impeded by tv concerns... a more ideal world where the competition is the primary focus when relevant. due to my long-standing use of franchise mode since adolescence on teh nintendo via pen and paper, lol, i also make sure there are worthy adversaries in each division in teh city of my choice

certain teams get terrible market sizes <coughyankessredsoxcough>... lol

So,. most importantly, how have you played sports games in the past, even if on a console with a joystick? each league you create you are going to add and change and maybe even revert back again. after 1-5 years you'll have somethign consistent - my best guess... and the process along the way is fun, too. what i do is pretty consistent, but evne so i find new things to try. whatever sparks an interest.

It's very overwhelming. Spend some time with the settings and figuring out what they do and what you want to get out of your games. I spent all of OOTPX (10) testing out settings and starting games and quitting games and starting again and quitting again. You're not going to get it absolutely the way you want it your first time out of the box, so enjoy the process of moving towards how you want to play it, and then play it to your heart's content. That'd be my advice. It's like working on the fundamentals in baseball. It's kinda boring, but if you work hard at them, you'll be a much better player than you would be without them.

I like to sim about 1 month at a pop. The only thing that really stops my sims are injuries, players getting off the DL and trade offers.
I am considering enlarging Active Roster size to 26 or 27. I usually set the Stop Sim for injuries over 3 weeks.
If I could get an Injury Depth Chart I would sim 1/2 a season or a season at a pop.

I love online leagues. My life has become much busier and I have not had the time I would like for them lately.

I play out all my games.

As for pitch-by-pitch, I use one pitch for most at-bats and go to pitch-by-pitch when I might want to steal. (The game does not handle stealing very well in one-pitch).

jsteele1020,

Out of the Park(OOTP) 17(and Every Version before OOTP 17) is EXTREMELY Deep. I'm quite sure you've noticed this by now, lol. The depth of this Baseball Sim("game") is "mind blowing" as some have voiced in this post. The reason why it is important to grasp how deep OOTP is - is because it will depend on how deep you will want to go IF you are going to have multiple seasons. Personally, I play as GM of the Chicago Cubs (I play with completely fictional players/front office personnel). This new league I am playing with be my 'Main' Baseball Universe' - meaning this League will be the one where I will be importing from version to version. I am starting out my league in 1960. But I will not be interested in playing out every 162 games every season, lol. . Now, you very well might enjoy doing that!! But, as for me.....nah, lol. I put MOST of my focus on trying to keep my good players, drafting my next super star and scouting my feeder leagues (high school and college teams). I love scouting my 'feeder' leagues. You can watch a HS player from the age of 15, then in college until he hits the minors (or sometimes in my case, I've seen them go to international leagues to help develope). If I were to play out my games or watch the games pitch by pitch, it would take me (in real time) a year to play out a 'year' in my MLB Universe. I do, however, watch games every so often. Games I make a 'point' to watch are the Season Opener, milestone or record breaking games for certain players, meaningful games like a few playoff games and many others I will sometimes watch. I will even watch games *IF* a player on other teams are on the verge of breaking a record or hitting a milestone in their personal career. In this new career I am creating where I will be importing from version to version, I will even be taking pictures (print screen) of games of players who break records or hit their personal milestones. Then I will attempt to be creative and create a weekly newspaper (out of the game, obviously because this isn't in OOTP) using those pictures I've taken using the print screen key on the keyboard, I will be putting together stories of these record or milestone breakers.

Why am I telling you all of this??? Well, going back to what I have said in the beginning and going back to what several others have said in the beginning, playing out or watching games all depends on personal preference due to the sheer Depth of OOTP. How much time do you want to spend in the game (the entire game, not the actual pitch by pitch game)? Either way that you decide that you do it is WELL WORTH the time and money spent, but it is entirely up to you on how deep you want to go in what direction you decide to take to get there. Hope that makes sense, lol.

Happy Gaming, Mate!!!
