Unreasonable Owner?
Anyone else ever run into this situation?
I am a new player of this fine game and enjoying it a lot. Right now I am managing the 1967 Detroit Tigers in what is a replay of one of the tightest pennant races in American League history. The Red Sox won the real season. It is now the halfway point in the season and I've got the Tigers in first place by 1/2 game and I get a message from the team owner. He states he is very pleased with how the team has played and how I have managed them to first place but that he is unhappy with my lack of effort to trade for a Cy Young Award winner???? Mickey Lolich, one of the Tiger pitchers, is leading the league in wins so far and I've got other solid starters in Earl Wilson and Denny McLain with fine records. He closed with saying if I don't acquire a Cy Young Award winner pitcher I could well be fired before season end. I have no idea how I am supposed to fulfill that awful demand. In fact how do I even know if I do push thru some big trade the pitcher I get will be a Cy Young Award winner? It all seems pretty ridiculous. Anyone else deal with this sort of thing? |

Trade for Vern Law or Dean Chance both are "I think" easy to acquire players and they both won Cy Youngs in '60 and '64 respectively and Vern Law was out of baseball in 1967ish, making him a good candidate to acquire. You need to actually trade for or sign a Cy young winner to compete this goal.

Yes, the owner just wants you to acquire someone who has won the award in the past. They don't have to win it this season. A stupid request? Perhaps, but it's not usually that difficult. Do a player search for past winners and then stash them as your long reliever if they are lousy.

Or just get plain dumb lucky and have someone already on your staff go ahead and win it that year... seems to do the trick.

Or turn off the owner goals. You don't have to have them on if you don't want to.

Sometimes you can get away with ignoring the owner if the team is doing well and making $. It gets precarious if the team starts to lose. The suggestion above of finding a former winner cheap and stashing him in bullpen probably keeps the owner happy even if it doesn't make sense to you or for the team. Welcome to the highly realistic "real" world of OOTP.

When I played with owners' goals, I always checked the "can't be fired" box, so I could ignore unreasonable demands like yours. I finally got tired of some of the silly demands and just turned the whole thing off.

I do try to meet the goals when they're reasonable. When it's too hard to meet them while trying to also win, I prioritize winning. I also find that the owner stays happy overall as long as I win and make money. I'd go so far as to speculate that for those who want the risk of being fired (I'd guess for some people it makes the game more exciting) and thus don't want to check the "can't be fired" box, that the owners' goals being on make avoiding firing a little easier, because the owner will be satisfied regardless if you win and make money; but if you fail to do one of those, the goals give you another way to appease him so that he might forgive a couple of disappointing seasons (and usually many of them are a lot easier to achieve than winning). |

the owner requests simply don't have to jive with success and more than not negatively impact the way i run a team by screwing with my decisions.
![]() turn it off if it frustrates you, like me, or learn the ins and outs of minimum obedience and timing of ignoring the owner. if i leave this window up, i'll just continue to whine about the feature.... i need to go find some cheese. |

I find my owner to insist that I renew contracts for older guys who want huge dollars and long-term renewals. In other words, he is nostalgic for guys, which is nice in it's way, but hurts the long-term ability of the team to be successful.

As long as you exceed winning expectations and/or you are more profitable than expected then you can expect a lot of leeway from the owner.

Just win. The owner will love you if you win.
