How to play this game using basic settings
Is there a way to play OOTP 17 using the very basic settings for the more simple minded fan? There is just too much to digest. Not that it's a bad thing.

That's a very broad question - what's simple to one can be difficult to another.
Best thing to do is start with a small fictional league, play around with it, and ask specific questions when you get stuck. There are plenty of long time users here who are more than happy to help.

You just need to remove some of the many variables. What I suggest is to create a very simple custom league. 16 teams fictional, with one level of minors. Disable financials and scouting/coaching, and play like that for a while. You can disable even more if you wish. Then gradually add in things like financials or scouting. Once you feel like you have a handle on things, consider getting involved in a more complex league.

jump right in & learn on the go. I thought it was too deep @ first as well (& I was looking for a deep GM sim), but you'll grow to love every small detail & learn more about the game/front office along the way.
enjoy. |

Just dive right into an MLB league. You will make mistakes but you will learn. When you have learned enough from the test league, delete that league and start up a keeper league.

start in global settings... read through stuff... disable what you think will be a headache or something you don't want to deal with at the moment. you can always turn these things on later.
Then just click accross the various settings pages... you'll see that you can skip 3 or four of them.. it's not as sprawling as you think. then continue into sub-pages of League Settings. The only other spot to browse over of note is the GM control settings and team strategies/player strategies. if you want to play fictional, do that... if you want real players, do that. don't start playing a different game than you want to play. it's going to be new no matter what, so start learning the one you like more first. |

How to play this game using basic settings
I always felt that the MLB Manager version should be available in the main game. Somewhat similar to FM with FM classic mode.

I'd also recommend the us baseball league QuickStart. That's a simple fictional league that is already setup for you

I think creating a fictional setup would be too overwhelming because you would have to choose all the settings. As jpeters said, just dive into the MLB Quickstart.

You don't have to choose any settings when creating a fictional league. You can leave everything at default and have no problems.

Exactly. I also feel like going with the MLB doesn't help you learn as well, because you have expectations of certain teams and players based on what you know of them in the real world. Playing fictional forces you to actually learn the game.

Bats has a point, but sometimes familiarity with names can make a new player more comfortable. Six of one, a half dozen of the other. Do whetever makes you feel comfortable.

You want a basic game experience? Do the MLB Quickstart, it's the easiest way for a "simple minded fan" to just get in and go. Pick a team and try to pilot it to a pennant.
If playing the actual games is what you most want to do, choose to be the manager, not the GM, unless you also like all the business stuff like free agency and contracts and drafts and setting ticket prices against the demand curve and keeping your eye on 75 different things outside of your immediate team all at once. If you basically want to play ballgames and do in game strategy, QuickStart as just the manager would be the way to go. |

Does OOTP 17 have an ABA quickstart, as previous versions do? That would be a good place for a beginner to get his/her feet wet.
I've always thought there should be more quickstarts. Many people have interesting little fictional leagues that could be added to the quickstart menu.
