A couple suggestions
So I have a few suggestions for the next version of OOTP:
1) I love number retirement but sometimes it can be wonky. For example Jeter decided to play a few more seasons but the team he signed with had #2 taken so he ended up with something like #83 which is what ended up retiring. Now, to most players their number is more than just a number, and usually has some significance to them so it feels kind of silly to have it work totally randomly.. A simple solution to this would be have a second, hidden number which represents the player's preferred number which they will always try and take if they can. If two players prefer the same number then the player with the most total ML service time gets it. 2) This is less of a suggestion but I'd also like to see numbers used more. One place they could be added is as an on-field picture for no-facegen games rather than using the team's logo, or perhaps add it in with their name on field. I just think they are underutilized.

Note to self: Princess Kenny was really off-putting. ![]()

I don't think there necessarily needs to be a second preferred number, just an attempt to keep it as close to the player's original number as possible. For single-digit numbers, it would automatically try for the double of it -- Jeter would go from #2 to #22 -- and if that's not available, then something ending in that digit. Veteran players should always opt for lower numbers, so Jeter would end up with #12 or #32 instead of #82.
If the number desired currently belongs to a rookie -- or the game could use personality and popularity ratings for this -- the new veteran player could get the number and it would generate a news story about the veteran buying the rookie a Rolex for the number or something. If the rookie has dickish personality ratings, he could refuse, which could create a storyline that those two don't get along in the locker room if the veteran addition has ratings that would make him hold a grudge over such things. |

I'm not in agreement with this as many well known veterans have high numbers. Aaron 44. Russ Martin 55 Justin Verlander 35, Ortiz 34 VMart 41, Beltre 29, Scherzer 37.

In the OP's example, Jeter ended up with 83, which is a little ridiculous IMO. In the example I gave, which was adding a number before the 2, Jeter would opt for the lower number (12, 32, etc.) rather than the higher number (72, 82, etc.). There are a few ways to make it a relevant number: add a digit to a single-digit number, take away a digit from a double-digit number, flip it, add one, subtract one, double it, cut it in half, keep the same first number, keep the same second number. The low-number rule would apply at around 60. So even though flipping a two-digit number (34 becomes 43) is logical, if a guy wears 17, he's more likely to go to another of the above rules (and get 16, 18, 27, 37, 47, 34, 1, or 7) rather than taking 71. Like I said before, basically no Spring Training numbers for veterans without a good reason as a general rule. There's no reason that Jeter should wear 83. Perhaps outliers could be linked to personality rating, so you have the occasional situation like Manny Ramirez wearing 99 for the Dodgers. But like I said, as a general rule, no Spring Training numbers for veterans. Last edited by DiMaggio5CF; 11-22-2014 at 10:00 PM. |

While we're on the topic, can we please have the old option for changing a player's number? I hate that it's in the EDITOR tab now and I can't see which numbers are already being used by the team. If I want to change a player's number, I have to look to make sure it isn't taken, then if it is, I have to change that player to another number that isn't taken, etc. It takes way too long and the old method was much better.

I use this tool, but I still think it was easier to change numbers before the option was moved into the EDITOR tab. Why should I have to go into Commish Mode just to change numbers. It's added a few steps to the process for seemingly no reason at all.

First of all, I agree that I preferred when you could change numbers without going onto the Editor page.
Secondly, a sort of roundabout way to get rid of the issue with the wrong numbers being retired would be to provide us the option to unretire numbers. This is obviously not something that happens in real life but I see no reason not to add it to the game in case of accidents/mistakes. Another thing with regards to numbers that could be cool is a display of all the numbers a player has worn over the course of his career. I'm thinking something like you see on a player's Baseball Reference page (example) where each number is sort of stylized based on the team's colors. |

You'll have to direct your questions to the game developer. |
