Arbitration question
Question for all of you: Is it possible to sign a guy to a lower arbitration number than his current contract figure?
I had a guy who I signed to a ridiculously high salary during his arbitration years. He's like a full-grown IFA type. I have the opportunity to offer him arbitration next year, and he's having a fine year but nowhere near the amount of money the arbitration calculator says. He's a good player but he's hardly a mission critical type. So could I possibly win a lower number in arbitration? |

Probably not. I would offer him a two or three year deal and try to lowball him that way.

How much is his contract?
What is his estimated Arb award? |

Pretty sure OOTP is set with MLB rule that the salary can't be dropped more than 20%, so you should be able to, but i never go the arbitration route, so not sure.

His contract is an obscene $15 million in a capped league where the cap is $110 million. He has a team option for $15 million which I can decline, which shouldn't make him a free agent.
He's demanding $18 million as an extension figure, which is hilarious since I don't want to pay him $15 million. ![]() He's not worth nearly that much except that my payroll even with him is only about $73 million. I was just hoping maybe I could drop it back closer to $12 million. |

Well, my guess is that's not going to happen unless you negotiate a multi-year contract and attempt to backload it, but that doesn't sound like it's in your best interests. Think it's time to cut the cord.

best solution is probably to Non-tender, and negotiate with him in FA.
and yes if you decline his option you will still own his right until arbitration day. My favorite so far was a player in same situation declining a player option, but he wasn't FA nor arbitration bound (less than 3 years). so he got guaranteed contract equal to prior year (which was less than the option) |

Thanks so far to everyone for all your advice.
His arbitration estimate is "just" $15.8 million. I figure the worst thing I can do by declining his option is getting him in arbitration for $15.8 million. I think it's mostly going to depend on what's in FA as to whether I cut the cord or not. |

Well, if nothing else, hopefully you learned not to throw heaps of money at young players when they still have Arby years.

but this was an international FA, so many times you don't have a choice. I now just expect to be signing them for the first contract and hope they are good enough to warrant a QO (OOTP style) and get me a draft pick

I'd try to trade him before he hits arbitration if you really don't want to pay him that cash.
