Young players leaving baseball to play other sports

I saw a post complaining about this (here? in an online league forum?) so I had been thinking about the topic for a while, then had it happen in an online league this morning.

I believe that this is not implemented very well.

It's not that a player would never leave one sport to take up another. However, in real life, this is a known risk, researched as part of scouting players. Teams know perfectly well when a player they are taking has the talent to attract interest in another sport. In OOTP, it's more like a random lightning strike, which does not strike me as realistic.

I'm less certain, but I also suspect that these players communicate with their teams before up and leaving -- it's not like the first the GM knows about it is in the morning paper. Maybe another sport has offered more money, putting pressure on the team to make a counter offer. Maybe progress through the minors is too slow, and another sport offers a faster route to the big time. Maybe the player is not happy with his performance. But, whether fans are privy to the conversations or not, I'll bet it is very rare for a well regarded prospect to leave without any communication ahead of time.

I know that whole Michael Jordan retiring in 1993 thing still gets to me....He gave no warning whatsoever.

Well, don't think of it as reading it in the newspaper. (Yes, I know that's how it's formatted.) Think of the 'news' as the player coming to you and saying "Thanks, but no thanks."

It's just a storyline, it doesn't have the kind of coding behind it to be that complex. Look at it as another way of having a CEI event, the result is the same. I wouldn't think too much into it.
