States League update
The States League is entering its final week of First Round play Wednesday night. The 38-team league pits the all-time greats of each state (by birthplace) against one another to determine the best baseball state in the union. The 100-game first round will filter out the best 12 teams, who will advance to a 54-game Second Round.
Thus far, Maryland has been the surprise team. Despite ranking just 15th in all-time major leaguers, the Old Line State has a commanding lead in the Mid-Atlantic division and is battling California and New York for the best overall record. Maryland has some big-name talent for a medium-sized state, including Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, Cal Ripken Jr, and Lefty Grove. The other states who have clinched Second Round qualification are PENNSYLVANIA (2nd in major leaguers), who had a slow start despite a lineup with Honus Wagner, Roy Campanella, Stan Musial, Reggie Jackson, and Ken Griffey Jr.; and TEXAS, who features Tris Speaker, Rogers Hornsby, Greg Maddux, and Nolan Ryan. Other teams poised to advance are Illinois, Wisconsin, Alabama, Oklahoma, Indiana, Ohio, and New Jersey.
