Which is the best way?

Okay here is the situation in an online league...without a DH..My best hitter who plays 1B is hurt for 7 weeks..I think I have a good enough team to contend so I go out and trade some prospects for a stud 1B...I really need the hitter as pitching has carried me all season.. When Ciotti( the injured player) is ready to play what should I do..I am weak in the OF and at 3B and am thinking about using him there even though he only plays 1B...Would it be better to bring him back to the Big club and just have him learn a position there or should I put him In AAA ball for awhile and see if he can learn a new position there...I really need his bat..and I think his bat will more then make up for the D I am losing...

What do you guys think????

Well I'm kinda a purist and I don't think you should be able to play a guy anywhere on the field just to get the bat. I would learn the guy a new posistion in the minors, just call it a rehad assignment but everybody dosen't think like me. Alot of this can depend on your leagues rules. if they allow you to play any player anyplace on the field then go for it and get that bat back.

Thats what I was leaning towards...I had also mentioned to our commish in a chat I was going to send him to AAA for a rehab assignment....As far as I know we have no rules about playing out of position...though Kinda like the idea..I'll have to check the rules....Thanks for the reply...I guess I could try to trade him but he is hurt for 5 weeks still and we are 2 weeks away from the trade deadline so it would be tough to trade him for value...

Thanks for the reply

I think it's a tough call. From my experience, 1st basemen don't learn other positions nearly has well as middle infielders or outfielders do. After all 1B is their default position for a reason.

In my league, I acquired an all-star caliber 1B in a preseason trade. I had a 23 year old 1B in AAA with a big bat that I wanted to get in the lineup. I played him in LF every day from the start of the season. I took until September for him to get a defensive rating in LF and he only had E range and a .953 fielding percentage. Needless to say, the experiment didn't work to well. I ended up trading the older 1B for an outfielder and moving the young guy back to 1B.

you could trade for a stud outfielder or third baseman and push them or one of your current OFs or 3B to 1B for the 7 weeks. if you'd like to save your prospects, picking up an aging hitter with mediocre ratings for LF, RF, and 1B shouldnt be too hard and could supply some excellent pinch-hitting down the stretch.

Yea I should have thought about that before....I could have traded for an OF instead...but the 1B I got fit exactly what I was looking for. Nontheless I have already made the deal for the 1B so that is not an option now...Unless I trade the 1B I just acquired for an OF...hmmm...this is getting all confusing on me now....Anyhow If he can't learn a new position....I may try just getting him in the lineup here and there...or maybe someone who is not contending will be willing to give up something to get him..Someone who can afford to wait the 5 weeks ....

hmmm....i think you put yourself in a tough situation.

i never trade for help (with a guy hurt) unless the trade deadline is near AND the guy who is hurt will still be hurt until september.

for example...i lost rondell white for 8 weeks in july. i needed another bat b/c marcus thames was not cutting it as a replacement. so i traded robin ventura, randy choate, and two minor leaguers to the Braves for Chipper Jones, Wes Helms, and two others.

i pushed Chipper to LF until Rondell came back, then moved Chipper to 3B. who played third in between? that would be wes helms.

each guy was a free agent and it helped the Braves b/c Chipper had no interest in resigning with them, but Ventura had 2 years left in his contract. i made the move b/c i wanted Henson to play 3B next year full time so i got rid of ventura's contract for a rent-a-year player in Chipper.

anywayz...what i'm sayin is that i think you acted too quickly. maybe if you were a bit more patient you couldve survived without your 1B. now you are kinda stuck with both or deal one of 'em. up to you.

Yea I did kinda stuck myself abit...but I already had one of the worst offenses in the league...I needed to get the bat....I see what your saying though..I am in a very close race though and without my best hitter for 7 weeks ...could cost me the division..I was going to wait and see how things went, but this guy was available and the price was right...We'll see what the future holds ....
