DePodesta out?

Just found a story from the LA Times saying that Paul DePodesta could be fired this weekend.

Link- (subscription required) http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-...adlines-sports

Interesting to see... could Epstein be on his way out of Boston as well?

Certainly would surprise me. He has had little time to work with.

But maybe McCourt is caving to all the pressure from the morons in the LA media.

Epstein's deal is apparently all but done so I don't think he'll be on the market.

Which is why I believe he told DePo to go out and sign Lowe to that awful contract.

Yeah, it really does look like DePo's going to get fired. Personally, I think while DePo's methods were obviously sound, he hasn't done well under the big media spotlight that comes with running the Dodgers. That said, I think it's utterly idiotic to fire someone after a year in which the Dodgers almost certainly would have won the division but for all the injuries.

As the first stathead GM to get the axe, assuming it falls, it will be interesting to see how long it takes DePo to get another job running the show.

"But he did not meet with managerial candidate Orel Hershiser on Tuesday. Hershiser, the Texas Ranger pitching coach and former Dodger, instead had a lengthy dinner with McCourt and senior advisor Tom Lasorda."

I found this bit very interesting. Ya think Lasorda is a big fan of DePo and performance analysis? If the GM is fired, I'm betting Hershiser is the new L.A. manager as the Dodgers reclaim their heritage.

Barf!

Could be but I could see him going another direction with very recognizable names (Bowden/Valentine anyone? BARF!). What would make McCourt turn on DePo so fast? It must be the manager selection process (which has been an absolute joke).

If McCourt could buy a clue, the Dodgers real championship heritage begins with Branch Rickey. I'ma thinking Branch would have a real appreciation for what DePo's been working at.

I believe Lasorda, who seems to have the owner's ear and massive Dodger cred, can be a very persuasive individual.

I would actually die of laughter if the Dodgers hired John Hart as their new GM. If it is at all physically possible.

I think Bobby V has said that he wants to stay in Japan another year, thankfully.

My guess at the favorites if indeed DePodesta is out: Pat Gillick, Kevin Towers, and Bowden.

Lasorda is a big Bowden (and Valentine) guy and if he has indeed captured the ear of McCourt, those would be his two targets.

I think the greatest indignation a GM could suffer is being fired for (edit: er.. wrong sport) Jim Bowden.

If Bobby V. gets the job then Japan has been very good to his career. Takes over the Rangers, wins nothing, goes to Japan, and then gets the Mets job. Wins nada there, returns to Japan, and now another move up the MLB food chain into what would be Valentine's dream job.

With the press conference less than a half hour away it looks certain.
I would imagine DePodesta's poor people skills is part of the reason. That's kind of odd considering the McCourt's skills in this area are just as bad. Whereas DePo has trouble communicating with people and seems like he'd rather just avoid any conversation, the McCourts are willing to talk to people. They just keeping sticking their feet in their mouths. Jamie McCourt bragging about the success of the 71-91 season because the team made a profit is just one recent example.

The McCourts still demonstrate they have absolutely no idea how to handle this franchise. They think of McCourts as the brand name and Dodgers as a product whereas it SHOULD be the Dodgers as the brand name and baseball as the product.

The organization is in shambles, basically starting at the point they were two years ago when the McCourts came in, fired Dan Evans and fired or forced out most of the high ranking front office officials.

My speculation is the final straw for DePo was when he gathered up 5 ho-hum managerial candidates and did not include any former Dodgers. When McCourt (possibly with Lasorda and others' urgings) pushed for Orel, Gibson, Valentine, or others with Dodger backgrounds, DePo and McCourt probably had a blow out. Orel met with McCourt and Lasorda, with no DePo in attendance.

My thoughts _exactly_. McCourt wanted the guy with "character," Depo wanted the guy who was cheap and believed his philosophy. So I guess this means I'll get my wish and Orel will get hired. I'm just going to be very nervous until they name Depo's replacement. I may as well resign myself now to the fact that it's going to be Bowden.
