Joy in Mudville: A "Friendly" Baseball League Beginning in 1970

[Joy in Mudville]

The Detroit Tigers tamed the Joy in Mudville League in the opening month of the 1976 season.

Led by strong starting pitching and timely hitting, the Tigers pawed their way to an American League-best 11-4 record. Detroit leads the American League East by two games over Boston.

Detroit starters lead the league with a 3.18 ERA. The bullpen did even better, coming in with a microscopic 0.37 ERA. Starters Randy Jones and Lerrin LaGrow are a combined 6-0. Closer Rich "Goose" Gossage has yet to allow an earned run and has recorded four saves.

On offense, 30-year-old rookie catcher Vic Correll has tied first baseman Dave Kingman with a team-best three home runs. Meanwhile, second-year left fielder Jerry Turner (.364) and rookie short stop Bob Bailor (.353) have been pleasant surprises.

What's more surprising is that two-time league MVP Fred Lynn has stumbled out of the gate, batting just .226. However, Lynn continues to drive home key runs for the Tigers.

Now, that's a scary prospect for opponents.

The 1-2 National League home run combination of George Hendrick (a league-leading seven home runs) and Dwight Evans (6) has the San Diego Padres off to a 15-5 start . . . Milwaukee short stop Gary Templeton made his debut April 23 with a 1-for-5 performance against California . . . Angels' rookie phenom Mark "The Bird" Fidrych hurt his right knee in just his fourth career start and is on the disabled list . . . The Cincinnati Reds are reportedly shopping Bobby Tolan, Tony Perez and Bernie Carbo . . . Milwaukee is seeking a first baseman via trade . . . Four players had five-hit games during April. They were: Mike Jorgenson (Mets), Al Cowens (Royals), Tom Poquette (Cubs) and Al Oliver (Pirates).
