We are in New York to play manager Jose Garcia (67) and his Mets a 4-game series. They lost 3 of 4 here to the Rockies over the weekend. The first time we met them, we split 4 games in Portland, June 7-10. They are 10th in the National League in scoring with 4.2 runs per game (Portland is #15 with 3.6). They lead the league in stolen bases with 182. They are 6th in runs allowed with 4.0 per game (Portland is #11 with 4.4). Their pitchers have walked the 2nd fewest batters in the league. They sent 5 players to the All-Star Game, the most in the National League.

Don Quinney works the count full and takes ball four. He steals 2nd on the first pitch to Jerry Alston. Alston then gets plunked. Ernesto Gonzelez works the count full and then rips a line drive right to 1B Manny Esquivel who catches it and steps on 1st to double off Alston. Rich Babbin flares one to right, down the line, but Bob Blair makes an unbelievable diving catch to end the inning.

Bottom of the 1st: Jesus Ramirez gets plunked with a 2-2 pitch. I don't think any retaliation was intended. If it was, it is stupid to so it to the lead-off batter. Guillermo Valenzuela flies out to center. Ramirez steals 2nd. Full count to Larry Brown and he flies out to right. Gary Brown grounds a hit to right and Ramirez scores. 1 to 0, Mets. Gary Brown then steals 2nd. Manny Esquivel flies out to deep center.

Top of the 2nd: Joe Hartin leads off with a grounder to right for a hit. Back-to-back walks to Ron Charles and Mike Cavallaro load the bases up with no outs. Rick Ferrell grounds a double down the 3rd base line and 2 runs score! 2 to 1, Beavers! Ron Rau grounds out to short and Cavallaro scores. 3 to 1, Beavers. Don Quinney grounds out to 2nd and Ferrell scores. 4 to 1, Beavers!

Bottom of the 2nd: Bobby Pins leads off with a single to right and Richie Ward draws a walk. They pinch-hit for P Larry Gauthier, but P Ron Rau strikes out 2 in a row. Then Jesus Ramirez hits a fly ball to right that Jerry Alston drops for a 2-base error and Pina scores. 4 to 2, Beavers.

Bottom of the 3rd: Larry Brown leads off with a walk. Brother Gary Brown hits a ball that looks like a sure hit over CF Rich Babbin's head, but Babbin tracks it down and fires a strike back to 1st to double off the runner!

Bottom of the 4th: We double another runner off base when Jerry Alston catches a fly ball and nails P Nelson Taveras off 2nd!

Top of the 6th: With 1 out, Ron Charles, Mike Cavallaro and Rick Ferrell all single to load the bases up. P Ron Rau then grounds a hit up the middle and 2 runs score! 6 to 2, Beavers! Don Quinney singles to load the bases back up. Jerry Alston grounds into a force a t 2nd, 4-6, but Ferrell scores. 7 to 2, Beavers!

Top of the 8th: With 2 outs, PH Frank Wiginton triples down the right field line and Don Quinney singles him home! 8 to 2, Beavers!

Bottom of the 8th: New Pitcher: RHP Larry Castillo. Richie Ward leads off with an infield hit and with 1 out, PH Jesus Concha hits a home run to right. 8 to 4, Beavers.

Top of the 9th: Rich Babbin leads off with an infield hit. With 1 out, Ron Charles singles and Babbin beats the throw to 3rd. Mike Cavallaro grounds into a force a t 2nd, 4-6, but Babbin scores. 9 to 4, Beavers!

We are in Houston to play manager Champ Walker (39) and his Astros a 3-game series over the weekend. They just beat the Marlins 3 out of 4 here. We are 2-7 against them this season and lost 2 games here July 3rd and 4th the last time we met. They are 3rd in the National League in scoring with 4.7 runs per game (Portland is back to #16 (last) with 3.5). They lead the NL in home runs with 155 in 120 games. We are last, by far, with 58. They also lead the league in walks by their batters. The old draw a couple of walks and hit a 3-run homer method... They are 5th in fewest runs allowed with 4.0 per game (Portland is #8 with 4.3).

Portland Beavers (48-72 .400 24 GB in 7th place in the NL West) at
Houston Astros (72-48 .600 in 1st place in the NL West)

Angel Rodriguez, Por (23 R 5-3 4.48 8.1-1.4-4.1-5.2 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Walt Deckman, Hou (30 R 7-9 4.15 8.8-0.9-2.5-5.8)

We are 0-3 against Deckman. He is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA. In 20 IP, he has given us 15 H, 2 HR, 3 BB and has 13 SO. He is 6-2 with a 2.26 ERA here in Houston and 1-7 with a 6.20 ERA on the road.

On paper, this looks like we are throwing Angel Rodriguez to the lions.... His weaknesses are that he walks a lot and gives up a lot of home runs, the two things the Astros are built to exploit.

We are back in Portland to face manager Ramiro Herrera (51) and his Diamondbacks in a 4-game series. They lost 2 of 3 in Phoenix to the Giants over the weekend. We are 4-3 against them on the season, but lost 2 of 3 the last time we met, June 29-July 1 at Arizona. They are 15th in the NL in scoring with 3.5 runs per game (Portland is 16th (last) with 3.5). They are 14th in runs allowed with 4.8 per game (Portland is #11 with 4.4). They have the worst run differential in the National League (only Texas in the AL is worse). We are 2nd worst in the NL, but 45 runs better than the Diamondbacks. They are in 6th place, 3.5 games ahead of us. A sweep in this series would move us up to 6th place. However, getting 4 hits a game, we are not going to sweep anyone.

Arizona Diamondbacks (52-72 .419 23.5 GB in 6th place in the NL West) at

Manager John Potter (49) has his Rockies here to play a 3-game series over the weekend. They were just swept in 3 games by the Padres in San Diego. We are 4-4 against them on the season, but lost 3 of 4 in Denver June 14-17 the last time we met. They are 2nd in the National League in scoring with 4.9 runs per game (Portland is #16 (last) with 3.5). They are 16th (last) in runs allowed with 5.4 per game (Portland is #11 with 4.4).

Colorado Rockies (67-60 .528 9.5 GB in 5th place in the NL West) at

On May 17, we beat Griffis, 3 to 0, here in Portland. In 5.1 IP, he gave us 3 R, 4 H, 6 BB and had 5 SO. He is 3-6 with a 3.44 ERA away from Coors Field. He is 2nd in the NL in fewest HR/9. Of course, that means little to us, since we cannot hit home runs off of anyone.

Random Fact of the Week: The San Diego Padres have won 14 games in a row and the amazing thing is that they have not played us during the stretch! They just swept the Astros in 3 games, who were in 1st place when the series started. They are doing it with pitching and defense. They have 5 shutouts during the streak and have only allowed 20 runs in the 14 games. Only 4 times have they scored more than 4 runs themselves.

Elsewhere: San Diego beat San Francisco, 2 to 1, in 10 innings at home for their 16th straight win. The Giants only had 2 hits, one a PH RBI single by ex-Beaver Scott Setta. The Padres swept the Astros out of 1st place over the weekend, putting the Giants on top and now have swept the Giants out of 1st place in 2 games, putting the Astros back on top. It won't be long before they are putting themselves on top.

We are in the Windy City to face manager Bill Reichel (61) and his Cubs a 4-game series through the weekend. They just split 2 games with the Reds here in Wrigley Field. The first time we faced them, we split 4 games in Portland, June 21-24. They are 8th in the National League in scoring with 4.4 runs per game (Portland is #16 (last) with 3.5). They are 15th in runs allowed with 5.1 per game (Portland is #9 with 4.4). Only a few runs separate spots 9 through 12.

Portland Beavers (53-79 .402 25.5 GB in 7th place in the NL West) at
Chicago Cubs (62-70 .470 17 GB in 6th place in the NL East)

Alan Gross, Por (27 L 5-7 3.34 8.1-0.8-3.2-6.3 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Salvador Lueras, ChN (30 R 7-12 5.91 9.6-1.6-3.8-6.7)

We have not faced Lueras before. He is 1 inning short of qualifying for the ERA title. Unless we knock him from the box before the 2nd inning is over, he will qualify after this game. He will then have the highest ERA in baseball for a qualifier (even if he shuts us out, though if someone else allows 20 or 30 runs in a game, he might wiggle out of the honor).

9: P Salvador Lueras (30 L .162-0-2-.324 in 37 AB)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Weather: 64 deg. Clear skies with an 11 MPH wind blowing out to center.

Frank Wiginton leads off with a hit to center. Don Quinney grounds a hit to left. Joe Hartin strikes out looking. Rich Babbin strikes out looking. Jim Eighmy works the count full and then takes a big cut and hits nothing but air....

Bottom of the 1st: John Godfrey lines one deep to center, but Rich Babbin runs it down on the warning track. Jake Johnson walks. Al Soto sends one deep to left center, but Frank Wiginton runs it down and holds on to the ball as he crashes into the ivy! 2 down. Larry Menard grounds a hit past the diving shortstop. Arturo Guerra grounds out to 2nd!

Top of the 2nd: Ron Charles leads off with a double and Mike Cavallaro draws a walk. A wild pitch outs them at 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Rick Ferrell grounds out to 3rd and Charles scores. 1 to 0, Beavers.

Bottom of the 3rd: John Godfrey leads off with a hit to center and then steals his 35th base of the year. With 2 outs, Larry Menard lines a hit to center and Godfrey scores to tie the game at 1 all.

Top of the 5th: Rock Ferrell leads off and beats out an infield hit. He goes to 2nd on a bunt, 3rd on a ground out and scores on a 2-out hit by Don Quinney. 2 to 1, Beavers.

Bottom of the 5th: With 1 out, Jake Johnson triples into the right field corner. Al Soto doubles to left center. 2 to 2. Larry Menard grounds a hit up the middle and Soto scores. Menard goes to 2nd on the throw to the plate. 3 to 2, Cubs. Bullpen is up. Arturo Guerra grounds a hit to right and Menard scores. 4 to 2, Cubs. With 2 outs, Joe Gombos doubles and Guerra scores from 1st. 5 to 2, Cubs. Call to the Bullpen: LHP Jim Ackley. Dan Beyeler grounds out to 2nd to end the inning, finally.

Lost - 5 to 2

We had 8 hits and made no errors.
The Cubs had 14 hits and made no errors.

Alan Gross (L 5-8) went 4.2 innings, allowed 5 runs, 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. He threw a WP.
LHP Jim Ackley went 1.1 innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.
LHP Pedro Huerta went 1+ inning, allowed 3 hits and a walk, but no runs.
RHP Freddy Arana went 1 inning and retired all 3 batters he faced.

Salvador Lueras (W 8-12) went 7 innings, gave us 2 runs, 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. He threw a WP.
RHP Hal Colquitt (SV 3) went 1 inning, gave us a hit and struck out 1.

RF Don Quinney had 2 hits, stole a base and had an RBI. CF Rich Babbin had 2 hits with a double. C Ron Charles hit a double and scored a run. SS Rick Ferrell had 2 infield hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

For the Cubs, SS John Godfrey had 3 hits with a double, stole a base and scored a run. 3B Larry Menard had 3 hits and a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Elsewhere: The Padres lost, 6 to 5, at Cincinnati to snap their winning streak at 16 games. CF Ron Vayo of the Reds hit 3 home runs. He will be a free agent after the season, the only decent center fielder projected to do so, but he is not a good fielder at all and will not play anywhere else, by all reports. Plus, he seems to be injury prone. Our own Rich Babbin will be a free agent and we will likely not re-sign him, since he will be 37 next year and is asking for $6 million for one year. However, if we cannot work out a trade for an acceptable replacement shortly after the season is over, we may consider it. But if we do, he is sure to hit under .200....
