THEODORE MIDYEAR LEADER IN NI SECOND
At midyear in the NI Second Division the high-scoring Theodore Bobcats (7-3) have a slight one-game edge over the Union Heights Hackers (6-4) and Kofa Kings (6-4)... the other three clubs, Avalon (4-6), West Chester (4-6) and Kinston (3-7) are not deemed to be challengers for the league title. The Bobcats are batting a lofty .309 with 73 runs, both stats easily lead the league... the Kings (3.14 ERA) and the Hackers (3.21 ERA) have the best pitching... Avalon has walloped the most homers with 11... the Bobcats are next with 10 roundtrippers... Union Heights (.973 FA) and Kofa (.962 FA) are running 1-2 in defense. Theodore has the best chance of snagging the pennant... the Bobcats hit the heck out of the ball and have just enough pitching (4.00 ERA) to survive. GATORS, SAINTS, LIONS IN 3-WAY TIE IN SI FIRST LEAGUE
It's a three-team donnybrook in the South Island First League... the Guedon Gators, St. Dominic Saints and Opelousas Lions are all jammed up with 7-3 marks... last year's champ Labadieville (4-6) is off to a slow start so far, but could get back in the race before the season is over... the Claiborne Cardinals (4-6) could contend, too... Des Allemands (1-9) is already too far gone to get back into the pennant race. The Gators are the best hitting team with a .312 BA... Claiborne is second with a .279 BA... and Opelousas is third at .274 BA... the Lions have scored the most runs with 74 and are tops with 11 longballs, followed closely by Labadieville and Des Allemands with 10 apiece... the Saints have the best team ERA at 3.68... and Guedon easily has the best defense with a .966 FA. St. Dominic's mound staff may be the difference maker in deciding the league crown... the Saints don't hit well, but they can manufacture runs with their speed. CUBS, TIGERS TOP SIRL SECOND AT HALFWAY POINT
Nobody is dominating in the South Island Second League thus far... the Delacroix Cubs (6-4) and Meraux Tigers (6-4) are on top at midyear with three teams snapping at their heels... the Bayou Bleu Blues, Mystic Mariners and Bar Harbor Acadians are all 5-5 for the season and are aching to take the top spot... Chitamaca is 3 games off the pace in last place with a poor 3-7 record. The Blues top the league in scoring with 67 runs... the Cubs are second with 66... the Cubs and Blues have the lead in homers with 13 each... Delacroix is best with a .278 BA with Bayou Bleu second at .262 BA... last place Chitamaca has the best team ERA at 3.93, followed closely by Meraux at 3.96 and Delacroix third with a 4.09 ERA... and Bar Harbor has the top defense with a .970 FA. The team with the best offense, coupled with decent pitching will win the South Island Second League flag... that might favor the Meraux Tigers over the Delacroix Cubs by a tad... Bayou Bleu and Mystic poor defense will eliminate those two clubs... Bar Harbor's bad pitching gives them no chance at the pennant... and poor defense will add to Chitamaca's shortcomings and woes. Monday, May 11, 1953 NIRL FIRST DIVISION IS A FANS DELIGHT, GOOD AND TIGHT It's a delightful season in the North Island Recreational League First Division this year... it's only two games from the top of the league to the bottom of the league... the first place New Yerby Yankees won 7 of their first 8 games, but have floundered since, dropping three games in a row... they have a one-game margin over second place Stockdale... the other four teams are just two games out in last place. Jackson topped New Yerby this weekend 6-2... while Joliet jolted Stockdale 8-2... and the Dutton Coyotes rallied to whip the Wafford Eagles 5-3. |

Monday, May 11, 1953 MERAUX, DELACROIX BEST IN SI SECOND LEAGUE All of the weekend games were close ones in the South Island Second League... all of them were decided by just one run... the Meraux Tigers and Delacroix Cubs are still the best clubs in the league, tied for the top spot with 7-4 records... the Tigers had to rally in extra innings to top the Bar Harbor Acadians 6-5... the Cubs held off the Bayou Bleu Blues 4-3... and the Chitamaca Moccasins got back into the win column by edging the Mystic Mariners 6-5. |

SAINTS-GATORS, BOBCATS-KINGS, FEATURE GAMES THIS SUNDAY IN THE ISLANDS It's going to be a big weekend this Sunday in Island baseball with two featured games... the South Island First League has a first-place showdown between the co-leading St. Dominic Saints (8-3) and the Guedon Gators (8-3) and the North Island Second Division showcase game has the top two clubs clashing at Theodore, where the first place Bobcats (8-3) will try to fend off the runner-up Kofa Kings (7-4). |
