AL pennant playoff game results

October 11th, 1909, South Side Park, Chicago

Naps Rally to Win, 5-4
The Cleveland Naps beat the Chicago White Sox, 5-4, in 11 innings at South Side Park. Cleveland shortstop Dave Shean had an outstanding performance. He was 2 for 3 with a double, while adding 2 RBIs and scoring once. The win puts Cleveland at 88-67 this season.
Cleveland used the timely hitting of Dots Miller to seize the win. The second baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the 11th inning to put the Naps on top, 5-4. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"It was a good effort all around," said Miller.

1909 World Series results

1909 World Series: Cleveland Naps vs. Chicago Cubs

Results

Game 1, October 14th, 1901, League Park, Cleveland
Road Win Lifts Chicago to 1-0 Lead in WS
The Chicago Cubs wasted no time taking the lead in the World Series, beating the Cleveland Naps at League Park by the score of 6-2. The win gives Chicago a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Cubs right-hander Babe Adams threw 9.0 innings allowing 2 runs.
Adams delivered a quality start for Chicago. The 6-foot-0 right-hander allowed no earned runs on 9 hits over 9 innings of work.
"Coach said he wanted eight innings, so I decided to do him one better," Adams said later.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at League Park in Cleveland.
Cubs lead series 1-0

Game 2, October 15th, 1909, League Park, Cleveland
Chicago Tops Cleveland Again, 5-0
The Chicago Cubs got an exceptional performance from starter Willie Mitchell, who silenced the Cleveland offense en route to a 5-0 shutout win in Game 2 of the World Series. The Naps could never get a bead on the left-handed Mitchell, who threw 8.0 innings of shutout ball. The Cubs now hold a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-7 series.
The Cubs liked what they saw from Mitchell. The 19-year- old pitcher had a commanding presence on the mound, limiting the Naps to no runs on 6 hits over 8 innings, and striking out 5.
"We have been clicking right from the start of this series, so our mission statement at the moment is just don't tinker with anything," Chicago manager Tom Loftus told reporters.
Game 3 is scheduled for Sunday at West Side Grounds in Chicago.
Cubs lead series 2-0

Game 3, October 17th, 1909, West Side Grounds, Chicago
Chicago Wins at Home to Take 3-0 Lead in WS
The Chicago Cubs are one game away from a sweep after downing the visiting Cleveland Naps at West Side Grounds, 8-2. Cubs left fielder Zack Wheat was 5 for 5 with a triple and 4 singles. He scored 3 runs. Chicago now holds a 3-0 advantage in the best-of-7 World Series.
In the bottom of the second, Chicago second baseman John Hummel had a productive at-bat. With runners on 1st and 2nd and two out, Hummel stroked a 2-run double to left-center. It made the score 4-2, Chicago. For the game, he went 1-3 with a double and a walk. He drove in 2 runs.
"It was a good day, but I'm not letting my guard down," Wheat said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at West Side Grounds in Chicago.
Cubs lead series 3-0

Game 4, October 18th, 1909, West Side Grounds, Chicago
Chicago Sweeps World Series
It was a glorious moment for Cubs fans today as Chicago claimed the 1909 World Series title with a 3-2 victory at West Side Grounds.
Jubilant Chicago players swamped each other on the diamond after completing a dominant sweep of the Cleveland Naps, as chants of "Thank you, Cubs" reverberated all around the ballpark.
In the losing dugout, sadness reigned. Naps skipper Rich Maier told reporters it was "hard to describe" the feeling of losing in the World Series.
"Your heart is heavy, you are hurting -- it's a very difficult time," he said. "And to be swept is embarrassing. You just want to forget it ever happened."
For the Chicago Cubs, it was a season to remember. They finished the regular season with a record of 99-55, good enough for first place in the NL. Then they topped it off by winning the World Series 4-0.
Cubs win series 4-0

World Series MVP: P Babe Adams (Chicago Cubs)

Game 3, October 24th, 1910, Shibe Park, Philadelphia
Athletics Surge Past Reds to Take 2-1 Series Lead
The Philadelphia Athletics nearly wasted a strong game from starter Earl Moore, but were saved by some timely hitting in a 9th inning walk-off win over the Cincinnati Reds today.
Moore pitched well in the 5-4 win at Shibe Park. He threw 9.0 innings allowing 4 runs. The win allowed Philadelphia to seize a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 World Series.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, an error by the Reds allowed the Athletics to score the winning run.
"We're one game closer to our goal," Philadelphia manager Connie Mack said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Shibe Park in Philadelphia.
Athletics lead series 2-1

Game 4, October 25th, 1910, Shibe Park, Philadelphia
Cincinnati Win Evens Series at 2
Trailing by a game in the World Series, Howie Camnitz was ready for his start.
The right-hander turned in a performance for the ages at Shibe Park, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Cincinnati Reds to victory in Game 4 of the World Series. Camnitz held the Philadelphia Athletics to 6 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 3. The win brought Cincinnati into a 2-2 tie in the best-of-7 series.
Camnitz gave Cincinnati a solid start. The right-hander allowed no runs on 6 hits over 9 innings.
"Coach said he wanted eight innings, so I decided to do him one better," Camnitz said later.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Shibe Park in Philadelphia.
Series tied 2-2

Game 5, October 26th, 1910, Shibe Park, Philadelphia
Critical Game 5 Goes to Host Athletics, 12-6
Philadelphia Athletics right fielder Chief Wilson was the difference-maker at Shibe Park, as he led his club to victory in a pivotal Game 5 of the World Series. The Athletics took the 12-6 win over the Cincinnati Reds to seize a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 series.
Wilson had a big at-bat with the bases empty in the bottom of the third inning, when he hit a solo home run. The Athletics went on to win.
"We're happy," Wilson told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last."
Game 6 is scheduled for Friday at Palace of the Fans in Cincinnati.
Athletics lead series 3-2

Game 6, October 28th, 1910, Palace of the Fans, Cincinnati
One for the Ages: Reds Beat Athletics on 15th Inning Walk-Off
The Cincinnati Reds went the distance and then some at Palace of the Fans to drag themselves back into a tie with the Philadelphia Athletics.
It took 15 innings to settle Game 6 of the World Series, but Cincinnati eventually took a walk-off, 4-3 win behind the efforts of pitcher Jim Scott. Scott threw 12.0 innings of 11-hit ball to aid the Cincinnati cause. The clubs are now tied 3-3 in their best-of-7 series.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. With the game tied in the bottom of the 15th, an error by the Athletics allowed the Reds to score the winning run.
"This ballgame left me feeling kind of raw," said Philadelphia manager Connie Mack.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Palace of the Fans in Cincinnati.
Series tied 3-3

Game 7, October 29th, 1910, Palace of the Fans, Cincinnati
Athletics Top Reds
The Philadelphia Athletics were good enough to get past the Cincinnati Reds at the Palace of the Fans today and secure the 1st championship in franchise history.
"When you wear Athletics on your shirt, you're good at something," Philadelphia skipper Connie Mack told the press.
Athletics second baseman Nap Lajoie was named MVP of the series after he went .355 with no home runs and 2 runs batted in.
"It feels totally incredible," Lajoie said. "I could live to 1,000 years old and I'd remember this moment."
The new champions capped off a great season with a 4-2 victory over the Reds to win the World Series 4-3.
Athletics win series 4-3

World Series MVP: 2B Nap Lajole (Philadelphia Athletics)
