Road woes doom Athletics; Bronchos steal 2nd pennant. Last season, the Philadelphia Athletics were able to survive a late season scare with a combination of fortunate events. This season, they were not so lucky, as they saw their run for a second consecutive American League pennant end at the hands of the Cleveland Bronchos. Despite having a resurgant Nap Lajoie, the Athletics could not find a way to win on the road, finishing with a record away from Shibe Park of 33-44, while winning over 50 games in their new stadium. Bronchos star Ty Cobb is said to be thrilled with his team's late season capture of the pennant, and is looking to make amends for what he views as a poor performance in the 1907 World Series. Code:

Bris Lord had an outstanding season, and Rube Waddell took back the top pitcher's spot in the National League, winning an astounding 29 games and striking out almost 400 batters! While this is the first rematch in World Series history, it appears that the Pirates should be well on their way to winning their fourth world championship. Code:

Ty Cobb will get on base, and if the pitching is good, then Cleveland could shock a lot of people. This is the first World Series rematch, and the Pirates certainly look capable of making history repeat itself very quickly this time around. With three 20 game winners, one of whom is the best in baseball, the Pirates are primed for their fourth championship. Prediction: Pirates in 5 |

1909 World Series
Game 1-10/10/09: Pirates-2 Bronchos-5 The Bronchos quickly showed their detractors that they would not roll over and die for the Pirates, taking Game 1 and playing solid ball throughout. They quickly took a 1-0 lead on Art Fromme when Don Ayers drove in Art Devlin, and from there, it was easy as pie for Cleveland. Jimmy Dygert held the hard hitting Pirates to just five hits, and their two runs came in the eighth and ninth innings, after the Bronchos had already taken a 5-0 lead. W: Jimmy Dygert L: Art Fromme Game 2-10/11/09: Pirates-2 Bronchos-1 (17 Innings) In one of the greatest games in World Series history, the Pirates outdueled the Bronchos in 17 grueling innings. With Rube Waddell on the mound, Pittsburgh thought they would have an easy road to victory, but Hooks Wiltse matched the Pirates' ace pitch for pitch, and inning for inning. The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the 4th behind back to back to back singles from Ginger Beaumont, Bris Lord and Dave Brain. The Bronchos answered back quickly in the bottom of the 5th, scoring their only run on a Peaches Graham single that scored Steve Evans. From there on, it was nothing but goose eggs for hours as both pitchers settled into an amazing groove. Waddell went 8 innings, Wiltse 10, and the Pirates survived four errors in the field. By the time the game reached the 15th inning, both teams seemed physically and mentally exhausted, and many were afraid that the game would be called due to darkness. However, both teams insisted on finishing, so the game went on. The Pirates had a chance to take the lead in the 16th with two on and only one out, but Kitty Bransfield and Claude Ritchey could not get the job done. In the 17th, with Cleveland using just their fourth pitcher, the Pirates strung together a double from Art Hoelskoetter, a sacrifice from Ted Easterly and a sacrifice fly from Honus Wagner to finally take a 2-1 lead. The Bronchos were horribly exhausted, but when Peaches Graham tripled with two outs, it seemed the game may continue. However, Deacon Phillippe forced Harl Maggert to ground out, and the longest game in World Series history came to a close. W: Sam Leever L: Dick Braggins S: Deacon Phillippe Game 3-10/13/09: Bronchos-1 Pirates-8 When the Bronchos got off the train in Pittsburgh following the 17 inning Game 2 marathon, they looked haggard, and their play in Game 3 certainly made many believe they were still tired from the previous game. The Pirates never trailed, and smacked out 9 hits, inlcuding a three for three day with 4 runs batted in for Bris Lord. Chief Bender gave the Pirates' tired bullpen an extra day off, outdueling Johnny Lush in pitching a complete game. W: Chief Bender L: Johnny Lush Game 4-10/14/09: Bronchos-1 Pirates-3 Cleveland's already meager offense continued to struggle against Pittsburgh's pitching, as they scored just their third run in three games, this time facing Game 1 loser Art Fromme. Fromme was back to his usual self this time out, pitching a three hit, seven strikeout gem of a game. Pittsburgh's offense was again led by Bris Lord, who went 2 for 4 and added another RBI to his postseason total. All Cleveland could do now was hope that they could get the series sent back to their home by winning Game 5 W: Art Fromme L: Jimmy Dygert Game 5-10/15/09: Bronchos-2 Pirates-4 With Rube Waddell and Hooks Wiltse again on the hill for their respective teams, Game 5 was one of the most highly anticipated games in recent memory. However, the Pirates jumped on Wiltse early this time around, knocking him for two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cleveland got one of the runs back in the 3rd when Don Ayers singled home Peaches Graham, but when Ginger Beaumont and Bris Lord drove in two more in the bottom of the 4th, the game was all but over. Waddell struck out 12 and walked only 2 in a complete game effort, and when Ayers grounded out to third, the Pirates had secured their fourth World Series championship in six years, making them an easy choice for Team of the Decade. W: Rube Waddell L: Hiooks Wiltse Series MVP: Bris Lord, RF-. 550, 6 RBI, 11 Hits 1909 World Series Champions: Pittsburgh Pirates Fourth Championship Last edited by Hurkman; 04-07-2006 at 01:37 PM. |

End of the Year Awards and Notes
Rookie of the Year American League ROY: Smokey Joe Wood, SP (SLA)- At only age 19, Wood became a true leader for a St. Louis team desperate for one. Without him, the Browns almost certainly would have finished much worse than they did. With him, they finished just 2 games under .500, and appear to be making their way back towards the top of the American League. In his first season, Wood gathered a 23-9 record, struck out 212 batters, and had an ERA of 1.76. Great things are expected for a long time out of this young man. National League ROY: Tris Speaker, CF (SLN)- Want to know the reason why Stuart Adamson wants out of St. Louis? You need to look no further than to Tris Speaker. This young phenom appears to be the best centerfielder since Ty Cobb first entered the game, and should be a centerpoint for the Cardinals for years to come. He hit .345, second in the National League, with 83 RBI and 31 stolen bases. Most Valuable Pitcher American League MVP: Frank Corridon, SP (PHA)- The Athletics may not have gotten back to the World Series this season, but that was not the fault of Frank Corridon, as he took home his first MVP award. After only winning 12 games in 1908, Corridon went 26-11 in 1909, with an ERA of 1.76 and 182 strikeouts. 1910 will prove whether or not this season was a fluke. National League MVP: Rube Waddell, SP (PIT)- Most people didn't even have to ask who was going to win this award; they just looked at the statistics and let them speak for Rube's accomplishments. 29 wins compared to only 7 losses, an astounding 387 strikeouts, the most in league history and an incomperable 1.79 ERA in the National League. All that adds up to the third Most Valuable Pitcher Award won by Waddell in four seasons. The Pirates also won their fourth World Series with him leading the pitching staff, and with him there, they will continue to rule over the National League. Most Valuable Batter American League MVB: Nap Lajoie, 2B (PHA)- After a few seasons which could have been placed in the "average" category, Nap Lajoie had himself a career resurgance this past season. After hitting at or around .400 for the first half of the season, Nap slipped some in the second half, finishing with a .347 batting average, 2 home runs and 63 RBI. Philadelphia is hoping the "New Old Nap," is here to stay. National League MVB: Dieter Kahle, CF (CHN)- Even Dieter himself can not believe the ability of play that he has been able to put up in the past four seasons, as he won his third consecutive MVB award for Chicago in 1909. The Cubs, and most of the National League, are using his face to sell tickets now, as clubs are reporting a much higher gate when "Big D" comes into town. As for this season, Kahle led the National League with a .346 batting average, knocked 2 home runs and drove in 64 men. Now, if the Cubs can recover from the doldrums of this past season, they should be contenders again. If not, then it looks like Kahle will have to wait and see if he gets to a World Series. February 1, 1910
News There were several managieral changes during the winter of 1909-1910, but none made more of an impact than John McGraw's retirement and subsequent hiring by the New York Giants. Yes folks, McGraw is back into managing, and he didn't even leave the Highlander's home city to find a new job. "After last season, I felt like my best playing days were behind me, and I still had that itch to manage," McGraw said. I went to the boss and he told me they wouldn't be letting old George Stallings go anytime soon, so I walked over to the Giants, sat down in their office, and had a job in 10 minutes. Everything should be that easy!" Highlander fans are reportedly outraged at McGraw's quick depature to the National League. The only thing that puts a smile on their faces is that the Giants finished with the worst record in baseball last season, and it should take many years before they are ready to go to the World Series. Rookie Watch Fortunately for the Giants, and unfortunately for everyone else, there is only really one star prospect up for grabs in the amateur draft this preseason. #1: Mike "Chuckles" Feldbush, 2B At only 19 years of age, Feldbush already seems to play like a man well beyond his years. He already has a keen batter's eye, and his bat speed, while still missing something, is on par with the average batter in major league baseball. He also brings solid speed to the table, and should become a base stealing threat very quickly. Seeing how the pool for prospects is very thin this season, the Giants will no doubt select him and possibly place him in the starting lineup for Opening Day. Draft Results
There were no surprises this year in the amateur draft, as the New York Giants selected second baseman Mike Feldbush with the first overall pick. Giants management are said to be thrilled with how he looks already, and have decided he does not need to spend a single day in the minor leagues. Whether or not that is a good idea will have to be judged later on. Round 1 Results New York (N) pick: 2B Mike Feldbush Chicago (A) pick: CF Dutch Zwilling Philadelphia (N) pick: P Hippo Vaughn Detroit pick: P Willie Mitchell Chicago (N) pick: CF Vin Campbell Washington pick: P Russ Ford New York (A) pick: P Marty Mchale St. Louis (N) pick: P Sailor Stroud St. Louis (A) pick: LF Zack Wheat Boston (N) pick: 1B Jake Daubert Philadelphia (A) pick: CF Hub Northen Brooklyn pick: P George Suggs Boston (A) pick: P Frank Lange Cincinnati pick: 3B Larry Gardner Cleveland pick: RF Harry Wolter Pittsburgh pick: P Dixie Walker Season Preview American League In 1909, the Cleveland Bronchos and Ty Cobb managed to overtake Nap Lajoie and the Philadelphia Athletics to win the American League pennant, before falling to the mighty Pittsburgh Pirates once again in the World Series. Can Philadelphia recover from coming so close to another World Series chance? Who else has the talent needed to make it into late October? Once again, the team who believes they have the best chance to win the pennant away from Cleveland is the Philadelphia Athletics. Nap Lajoie is coming off of his finest season in almost half a decade, and defending Most Valuable Pitcher Frank Corridon anchors a solid staff that seems to have very few weaknesses. Lajoie is not alone on offense either, being helped by Matty McIntyre, Al Bridwell and Red Kleinow. Philadelphia may have slipped to third in the final standings, but were leading the league for much of the year. It would be a shock to not see them near the top of the standings again. Then there is the team that finished one game ahead of the Athletics last year: the Boston Red Sox. Led by former Athletic pitcher Eddie Plank, the pitching staff could be considered one of the more potent in the American League. The main question in Boston has to be their offense. It was very streaky at times last season, and would appear to be no better going into this season. The Red Sox can only get so far on pitching, and will need their bats to come alive if they want to make another run at the American League crown. The New York Highlanders are still stinging from the departure of new Giants manager John McGraw, and have made it seem that this year is about proving he made a poor decision in leaving them. Eddie Cicotte and Doc Newton head a good pitching corps, while catcher Roger Bresnahan and outfielder Mike Donlin still remember when New York was on top of the American League. This team is another year older, and more people write them off each season, but it still looks like they may have one final run in them. National League To the surprise of no one, the Pittsburgh Pirates reclaimed their spot at the top of the baseball world last season, winning not only another National League pennant, but their fourth World Series in six years. While they are very sure of themselves in the Senior Circut, there are other teams that are looking to remove the kings from their throne. The 1908 National League champion Cincinnati Reds are still out to prove that they can play with the Pirates, and they may be the only team with a realistic chance at overtaking them. Despite Glenn Liebhardt's devastating back injury from last season that will keep him out of action for almost a month into this year, the Reds still boast one of the best rotations in the National League. Leading that staff is Noodles Hahn, who is coming off of a down season, but is ready to play in 1910. Youngster Jake Boultes is said to be in the mold of Hahn, and Bill Grahame and Jack Coombs will hold down the end of the rotation until Liebhardt's return. On offense, Sam Crawford is still only 29, and is looking for another solid season, as are Hans Lobert and Solly Hoffman. It will take a total team effort to defeat Pittsburgh, but the Reds might be the team to do it. In Brooklyn, hopes are high this season, as young Eddie Collins has started to draw comparisons to Ty Cobb over in the American League. With him on offense, and a pitching staff that is improving every year, the Superbas feel like they could be the ones to upend the Pirates. This is still a relatively young team, however, and it may take just one more season or two before they are truly ready to compete. But, if the pieces fit just right this season, Brooklyn may just be celebrating a pennant. |

Tigers lead tight American League race; Cobb on pace for history. Just like most other seasons in the American League, it is unclear on which team is going to head to the World Series in October. So far, it has been anyone's guess, but right now, the Detroit Tigers have slipped ahead of the New York Highlanders and the Cleveland Bronchos to take a slim 1 game lead at the halfway point of the season. The Tigers so far have an excellent mixture of both hitting and pitching that they have lacked since their last World Series appearance. If they can continue on this pace, whomever wins the National League should have quite a challenge. Despite being behind the Tigers and Highlanders in the American League pennant race, Cleveland Bronchos' centerfielder Ty Cobb in in the midst of a record setting season. So far this year, he has racked up a batting average of .422, and is on pace to set a new baseball record if he can keep up his super human pace. Code:

Chief Bender, Art Fromme and Rube Waddell each have 10 wins or more, and rookie Dixie Walker has yet to lose a game, going 7-0 through the first two and a half months of the season, as well as pitching a no hitter in mid-June. The offense is again being led by Ginger Beaumont and Bris Lord, as well as second year catcher Ted Easterly, who leads the team in runs batted in with 35. The other big news out of the National League is the St. Louis Cardinals finally giving in and trading unhappy centerfielder Stuart Adamson. Adamson, as you might recall, lost the starting position last season when St. Louis drafted Tris Speaker. From the start, he was not happy, and requested he be traded. Well, the Cardinals found a team willing to take him, and it's John McGraw's New York Giants. Stuart has already become a leader in the clubhouse since the trade in May, leading the team in average, home runs and stolen bases. He's also taken young Mike Feldbush under his wing in an attempt to make him an even better player. The trade also has the Giants out of the cellar in the National League, and they are looking to move even further up in the second half of this season. Code:

Just wanted to let everyone know where I've been for the past couple of weeks. It took until now, but the stress of graduating college finally got to me, so finishing my finals and looking for a job have slowed this down. However, everything is done with now, at least from the college side, as I graduate this Friday. So, once I get back home on Tuesday, expect an update.

Bronchos run away with American League as Cobb sets record. After being down by two and a half games going into July, the Cleveland Bronchos suddenly hit a new high in their play, running off several winning streaks throughout the summer and easily overtaking the Detroit Tigers for control of the American League. When all was said and done, the Bronchos had won by an astounding 17 games over Detroit. Of course, the leader of the Bronchos, Ty Cobb was on pace for history this season, and after hitting .422 through the first part of the year, he slowed, but still managed to demolish Nap Lajoie's batting record of .403 by hitting an incredible .411 for the season. It truly was a season for the ages for Ty Cobb and the Bronchos. Code:

Bris Lord led the Pirates on offense again, and Rube Waddell had yet another solid season, although Art Fromme may have passed him in the rotation after going 27-9 this year. It is an amazing sight to see dominance of this nature in such an evenly played sport. In New York, despite aquiring Stuart Adamson and compiling a decent record before July, the Giants faltered in the summer months, finishing second to last in the National League. Adamson struggled at times and finished with a .261 batting average. However, manager John McGraw knows that the pitching is what led to the downfall of his team this year, and the Giants will be looking to improve that before the start of the 1911 season. Code:

This time around though, it appears as if the Bronchos may have a slight advantage. To win, however, they must be able to take at least a game from both Art Fromme and Rube Waddell, something that looked seemingly impossible in the past. Despite all that, the Bronchos do have the better offense, and if Ty Cobb can play up to his .411 batting average that he had in the regular season, it appears as if the Pirates may finally drop a World Series matchup. Prediction: Bronchos in 7 |

1910 World Series
Game 1-10/18/10: Bronchos-0 Pirates-10 Despite hearing rumors that the Bronchos may be able to upend them this year, the Pirates came into Game 1 of the World Series with their usual swagger and poise, and it showed early. They scored once in the first inning and again in the fifth before opening the floodgates with six in the seventh and another two in the eighth. Rube Waddell pitched a complete game, striking out seven, and Bris Lord drove in four runs on two hits. W: Rube Waddell L: Jimmy Dygert Game 2-10/19/10: Bronchos-2 Pirates-3 Cleveland pitcher Hooks Wiltse threw an excellent game, but the rest of the Bronchos' defense struggled, allowing three errors by Peaches Graham, Steve Evens and Ty Cobb to let Pittsburgh steal Game 2. Cobb's struggles also continued at the plate, as he went 1-3, getting his first hit of the World Series. The Pirates were again paced by their pitching, as Art Fromme threw a seven strikeout complete game to pick up the victory. W: Art Fromme L: Hooks Wiltse Game 3-10/21/10: Pirates-4 Bronchos-3 Cleveland got off to an early 1-0 lead on a Ty Cobb sacrifice fly against Chief Bender, but from there, it was all downhill again for the Bronchos. The Pirates took the lead in the fifth following a Honus Wagner single and error by Cleveland shortstop Danny Shay. The would not give the lead up again, adding two more runs in the seventh and surviving a late inning Cleveland rally to get their third straight win in the series. Chief Bender continued the trend of solid pitching performances, striking out seven while throwing another complete game for Pittsburgh. W: Chief Bender L: Henry Gehring Game 4-10/22/10: Pirates-8 Bronchos-5 What was supposed to be the dream ending for Cleveland this season turned into a nightmare as the Pirates finished off the Bronchos with extreme ruthlessness. Starter Jimmy Dygert never had what he needed to extend the series, giving up all eight runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Ty Cobb finished the series with just three hits, leading to a .250 batting average. As the final out was recorded, the fans in Cleveland showered their team in boos and catcalls, letting them know how they felt about finishing second in the World Series once again. W: Rube Waddell L: Jimmy Dygert Series MVP: Rube Waddell- 2-0, 18 IP, 2.50 ERA, 13 K 1910 World Series Champions: Pittsburgh Pirates Fifth Championship |

End of the Year Awards
Rookie of the Year American League ROY: Willie Mitchell, SP (DET)- While the Tigers did stumble after having the American League lead going into July, Mitchell gave their fans hope for the future during and now following a superb rookie campaign. He finished with a 16-11 record in 306.2 innings pitched, along with a 2.32 ERA and 184 strikeouts. National League ROY: George Suggs, SP (BRO)- Brooklyn may not be the best team in the National League, but if the rest of their pitchers threw like Suggs, maybe they could get a little closer. Suggs finished off his rookie season with a 16-15 record, 142 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.88. Most Valuable Pitcher American League MVP: Jimmy Dygert, SP (CLE)- Yes, Dygert was off in the World Series this year, but without his stuff at the top of the Cleveland rotation, there was no way that the Bronchos could have even thought about making it back to another World Series. This year, Dygert had a 23-11 record, with an ERA of 2.46 in 321.1 innings pitched and 195 strikeouts. National League MVP: Art Fromme, SP (PIT)- If you are looking for the successor to Rube Waddell, it appears that all you have to do is look on the same team. This year, Art Fromme not only showed that he can be the next big pitcher in baseball, he seemingly proved it, gathering a 27-9 record with 289 strikeouts and an astounding 1.99 ERA in 349 innings of work. Most Valuable Batter American League MVB: Ty Cobb, CF (CLE)- Like there was any doubt about who this was going to be? Cobb shattered the old batting mark, finishing with an incredible .411 average for the season. While he did not play up to his superstar self in the World Series, during the regular season, he finished with 98 runs batted in, 2 home runs and 65 stolen bases. National League MVB: Dieter Kahle, CF (CHN)- It also seems that Cobb's counterpart in the National League is getting quite used to his position as the top batter in the Senior Circut. Kahle had another spectacular season in 1910, even if the Cubs did not. He led the National League with a .354 batting average, as well as hitting 4 home runs and driving in 72 runs. This is Kahle's fourth consecutive Most Valuable Batter award, making him the easy choice for top National League center fielder in the first decade of baseball. News There is very little major news to report about during this offseason, save for the talk coming out of Pittsburgh that there will never be another run of World Series titles like the one the Pirates have had in the early years of this series. After seven World Series, the Pirates have won five championships over the National and American Leagues, practically establishing themselves as the best team in baseball history. "There's no team around that can beat us, no way, no how," said shortstop Honus Wagner. "We have the best pitching, hitting and fielding in both leagues. Hell, you can take us around to those colored leagues too, and we'll show them a thing or two about playing some baseball." Eventually, there will be a team that can knock off the Pirates for an extended period of time, but until then, every other team must try and at least chip away at the seemingly impervious armor of the club from Pittsburgh. Rookie Watch With yet another weak pool of talent at the top of this year's amateur draft, it seems as if the Giants and Phillies will each get their pick and let the scraps fall to the other teams. #1: Killian Ditty, 3B While a little older than some of the other rookies profiled here, Killian more than makes up for it with his ability to knock the cover off of almost any baseball. This able-bodied third baseman from Boston grew up over the past decade watching a team from both leagues, and it seems as if he has learned from both of them. He's been said to have a swing that's as sweet as a bag of sugar, and can knock the ball to almost any corner of the park. While not as ready for the big leagues as the other man the Phillies are looking at, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, Ditty will certainly be welcome in either New York or Philadelphia. Draft Results
When the choice came down to instant help or developing for the future, the Philadelphia Phillies decided to reach for the future by selecting Killian Ditty with the first pick in the 1911 amateur draft. The Giants wasted no time with their pick, taking talented left fielder "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. Jackson has already been penciled into the Giants' lineup right in front of Stuart Adamson, giving New York a one two punch that could rival almost any in the National League. As for Ditty, he's been sent to Philadelphia's Class A ballclub for now. Hopefully, he can develop down there, and not end up wasting away on the bench like the last Philadelphia number one draft pick, Fletcher Parslofski. Round 1 Results Philadelphia (N) pick: 3B Killian Ditty New York (N) pick: LF Joe Jackson Washington pick: 1B Vic Saier Chicago (N) pick: CF Tim Hendryx Chicago (A) pick: P Pete Alexander Boston (A) pick: CF Max Carey St. Louis (N) pick: 3B Ed Mcdonald New York (A) pick: P Claude Hendrix Brooklyn pick: CF Ping Bodie St. Louis (A) pick: P Raleigh Aitchison Philadelphia (A) pick: CF Denney Wilie Detroit pick: LF Tilly Walker Boston (N) pick: P Pat Ragan Cincinnati pick: P Ray Fisher Pittsburgh pick: SS Otis Johnson Cleveland pick: P Ray Caldwell Season Preview American League The Cleveland Bronchos are starting to become the Pittsburgh Pirates of the American League, winning their second straight pennant, and third in the past four years. However, they have yet to get past Pittsburgh in the World Series, which has many believing their window may be shutting. There are a few teams in the American League who could shut the Bronchos' window, and possibly win the first World Series for the American League. First and foremost once again, the Detroit Tigers seem to have the most realistic shot at dethroning the Bronchos. Although they still have problems scoring runs, their pitching staff is one of the best in the American League, and should keep them in most games. As long as that staff can in fact live up to their potential, then the Tigers will be neck and neck with the Bronchos again this season, and should have a chance to win the pennant. While they have changed many of the parts from their run a decade ago, the New York Highlanders are again primed and ready for a run at the pennant. With a mix of new players and seasoned veterans, this could be the year that sees New York rise to the top of the American League again. Their pitching, while mostly unproven, has the ability to keep them in games, and their offense, led by a still solid Mike Donlin, as well as Roger Bresnahan and Frank Baker, is capable of putting large numbers up on the scoreboard every time up. Don't be surprised if this mixed group of seasoned players and fresh-faced newcomers makes a run at their first pennant in almost a decade. The Chicago White Sox may not have played well last season, but with the addition of rookie Pete Alexander to the pitching staff, they should be in the hunt for their first pennant this season. Joining Alexander on the mound will be Carl Lundgren, who led the White Sox with a 2.97 ERA last season. On offense, Jim Delahanty and Dutch Zwilling will be looked towards to provide most of the support needed for the pitchers. They may shock some people this year, or they could fall flat on their faces, but either way, this should be a fun team to watch. National League This past season, just like most others, the Pittsburgh Pirates rose to the top of the National League, claiming their sixth league pennant and fifth World Series title. While the core of that team is remarkably still intact and relatively young, there are other teams in the National League that would love to put an end to the Pirates' run of success. Of course, when you're talking about other contenders in the National League, you must first look at the Cincinnati Reds. To beat Pittsburgh, you must first do it with pitching, which is something the Reds have plenty of. Noodles Hahn is probably the best pitcher not in Pittsburgh, and Doc Crandall and Glenn Liebhardt make excellent second and third men in the rotation. On offense, Sam Crawford is aging well, and Solly Hoffman has really come into his own, leading the National League in runs batted in last season with 92. The Reds made a charge at Pittsburgh last season, but it will take a total team effort to knock the kings from off their perch. The other team that may just have a shot to make some real noise in the National League is the Boston Rustlers, formerly the Doves. The Rustlers look a lot like the Tigers in the American League; solid pitching, but little offensive skills. Orval Overall and Ed Summers each won over 20 games last season, but the staff is shaky after those two, as the number three and four starting pitchers won a total of three games combined last season. The offense is also a question mark, as it is filled with players that hardly anyone outside of Boston has even heard of. That being said, there is a small chance that the Rustlers could make a move this year, but it would likely be a one year wonder if they do so. |
