Venezuela - Lightweights

With 5 fighters in the Lightweight Division, we'll have a single fight-in bout.

Fight-In:

Ernesto Espana vs Cesar Orta - Espana came in the favorite but was unable to figure out Orta who moved well throughout and countered effectively keeping Espana off balance. The judges scored it 8-6, 9-5 and 9-5 for Orta.

Semi-Finals:

Edwin Valero vs Cesar Orta - Valero was patiently stalking when he suddenly walked into a flurry from Orta that put him down in the 7th round. He came back in the 8th then scored the KO in the 9th round to avert the potential upset.

Gilberto Serrano vs Gilberto Toronto Gonzalez - Gonzalez was the faster and stronger fighter, in control throughout, scoring a knockdown then the KO shot in the 14th round as time ran out.

Final:

Edwin Valero vs Gilberto Toronto Gonzalez - Gonzalez scored a knockdown and was in the lead early, only to have Valero score knockdowns in the 8th. In the 9th he scored 2 more, then piled on the damage to move into the World Tournament by way of TKO. Valero is now 2-0-0 (2).

Venezuela - Jr. Lightweights

We have 3 fighters in the Jr. Lightweight Division so top seeded Leonel Hernandez gets the bye.

Semi-Final:

Alfredo Marcano vs Idelfonso Bethelmy - Tactical bout with some terrific action at times saw many rounds too close to call, which made for some interesting scoring. The judges had it 10-4 Marcano, 7-7 even and 7-5 for the winner by majority decision Marcano.

Final:

Leonel Hernandez vs Alfredo Marcano - Hernandez showed little respect for Marcano, wading straight in and tagging him with a wild haymaker to score a knockdown on the first punch thrown in the fight then piled it on throughout the round until the referee stepped in with 1:03 left in the round for the TKO. Hernandez is now 1-0-0 (1) heading into the World Tournament.

Venezuela - Featherweights - Round 1

With 12 fighters in the Featherweight Division, the top 4 seeds will recieve byes. They are Cruz Marcano, Eloy Rojas, Victor Leon and Antonio Esparragoza.

Round 1:

Antonio Cermeno vs Nelson Ramon Medina - A solid performance by Cermeno against the scrappy Medina ended when Medina suffered a gash on his right eyelid in the 8th round for the TKO.

Jose Rojas vs Richard Carrillo - Toe to toe throughout, Carrillo's power was too much for the favored Rojas as he was battered into submission in a 4th round TKO.

Jorge Linares vs Yober Ortega - Linares survived a 2nd round knockdown to build up a lead then opened a gash over the eye of Ortega in the 13th that was gushing claret. The ring doctor called a halt to the procedings for the TKO.

Antonio Gomez vs Pedro Gomez - Antonio Gomez fought his way to a solid lead then held off Pedro Gomez to win the 6-8, 7-5 8-6 split decision.

Venezuela - Featherweights - Quarter-Finals

Quarter-Finals:

Cruz Marcano vs Richard Carrillo - Marcano and Carrillo fought a close fight for the first 10 rounds, but Marcano turned it up a notch, scoring 4 knockdowns in the final 5 rounds to win going away 11-4, 11-4 and 12-3.

Eloy Rojas vs Jorge Linares - This started out as a real barn burner with round 4 being one for the ages as both men hit the other with everything but the kitchen sink! The power of Rojas took over however, as he scored 7 knockdowns in the final 5 rounds, the final one for the KO in the 15th round.

Victor Leon vs Antonio Gomez -Gomez built up a lead, but it was Leon that showed suprising power scoring the lone knockdown of the fight in the 10th then came on to tighten things up. It went to the cards, and the scores were 7-7, 7-7 and 8-6 Gomez for the majority draw.

Antonio Esparragoza vs Antonio Cermeno - Esparragoza scored 2 knockdowns in the 10th and 2 in the 12th then piled it on for the TKO.

Rematch:

Victor Leon vs Antonio Gomez - Leon didn't seem to have his heart in this one as Gomez won the decision 10-3, 8-6 and 9-5.

Venezuela - Featherweights - Semi-Finals & Final

Semi-Finals:

Eloy Rojas vs Antonio Esparragoza - Esparragoza was dominant for most of the fight, but it took 4 knockdowns in the 13th to put Rojas away for the KO.

Final:

Cruz Marcano vs Antonio Esparragoza - A good close action bout that was decided when Marcano scored his 3rd knockdown of the fight for the KO in the 13th. Marcano improves to 3-0-0 (2) heading into the World Tournament.

Venezuela - Jr. Featherweights

We have a pair of fighters in the Jr. Featherweight Division.

Final:

Felix Machado vs Jose Valbuena - Machado scored a knockdown in the 1st round then continued to out point Valbuena in all but one round, then with a nasty gash over the left eye of Valbuena the referee stopped the bout for the TKO on the advice of the ring physician in the 10th round. Now 1-0-0 (1), Machado heads into the World Tournament.

Venezuela - Bantamweights - Fight-In

There are 5 fighters in the Bantamweight Division, so there will be a single fight-in.

Fight-In:

Edison Torres vs Eidy Moya - This fight had a few bright moments, but was rather pedestrian for the most part as Moya earned the 9-6, 9-5 and 8-6 decision.

Venezuela - Bantamweights - Semi-Finals & Final

Semi-Finals:

Bernardo Pinango vs Eidy Moya - Pinango survived a bad gash over the outside of his eyebrow to pull out the hard fought 8-7, 10-4, 10-4 decision over Moya.

Israel Contreras vs Ramon Bravo - Contreras had this fight well in hand, having nearly closed the left eye of Bravo and opening a cut over the right eye as well, building up a big lead only to throw it all away when he landed a blatant low blow (his 5th foul of the fight) that caused him to be disqualified in the 12th round.

Final:

Bernardo Pinango vs Ramon Bravo - After splitting 2 action packed rounds Pinango opened a gash over the right eye of Bravo in the 3rd that ended things for the TKO.

Venezuela - Jr. Bantamweights - Semi-Finals & Final

Semi-Finals:

Rafael Orono vs Jose De Jesus Lopez - A good action bout saw Orono break his hand on Lopez's forehead in the 7th to end things for the Lopez TKO.

Alexander Munoz vs Alimi Goitia - Goitia was dominant in the first 2 rounds, then was literally pounding on Munoz in the 3rd round when Munoz landed a wild hook from nowhere to knock Goitia out at the end of the round!

Final:

Alexander Munoz vs Jose De Jesus Lopez - Munoz came out and destroyed Lopez with a wicked uppercut with 1:14 left in the 1st round for the KO win and the World Tourney berth is now his with a 2-0-0 (2) record.

Venezuela - Flyweights - Quarter-Finals

There are 6 fighters in the Flyweight Division so the top 2 seeds, Lorenzo Parra and Betulio Gonzalez will recieve the byes.

Quarter-Finals:

Ramon Arias vs Gilberto Tico Gonzalez - Arias was the stronger of the 2, though Gonzalez fought well at times despite a gash that wouldn't stop bleeding that opened in the 3rd round. It kept widening throughout the fight until the 12th when the doctor ordered the fight halted for the Arias TKO.

Leo Gamez vs Ramon Calatayud -Calatayud boxed smoothly through the early stages of the fight only to have Gamez land a flash knockdown then wear him down towards the end. It went the distance with the judges scoring it 9-6 Gamez, 8-7 Calatayud and 10-4 for Gamez for the split decision win.

Venezuela - Flyweights - Semi-Finals & Final

Semi-Finals:

Lorenzo Parra vs Leo Gamez - Parra went down 3 times including being saved by the bell in the 15th and final round, but he was the stronger of the 2 sluggers throughout most of the fight to win the split decision 7-6, 8-7 and 8-7.

Betulio Gonzalez vs Ramon Arias - A tough fight to score as these 2 were slow early then both picked up the pace in the latter rounds. Neither man was down though both suffered swelling about the eyes. It went the distance with the judges scoring it 8-7, 7-7 and 9-6 for the winner by upset Arias.

Final:

Lorenzo Parra vs Ramon Arias - Arias fought brilliantly early on, moving well and countering with precision only to fade as Parras came on strong to take the latter rounds.
It ended up a very close fight with the judges scoring it 8-6 Arias, 10-4 Parra and 10-4 Parra. Parra improves to 2-0-0 (0) heading into the World Tournament.

Venezuela - Jr. Flyweights

We've 3 fighters in the Jr. Flyweight Division for Venezuela so top seeded Luis Estaba will recieve the bye.

Semi-Final:

Freddy Beleno vs Reinaldo Becerra - Becerra built up a lead as these two traded heavy leather throughout, only to have Beleno take over in the 12th, hurting Becerra early then pounding him unmercifully against the ropes until the referee ended the fight for the TKO.

Final:

Luis Estaba vs Freddy Beleno - Estaba was the agressor through out this bout, landing seemingly at will until Estaba came out head hunting in the 12th, landing 2 knockdown blows before the referee had seen enough for the upset TKO by Beleno who improves to 2-0-0 (2). Beleno will represent Venezuela in the World Tournament.

There are 14 fighters in the Heavyweight Division so the top two seeds, Tommy Farr and David Pearce will recieve byes.

Round 1:

Carl Gizzi vs Malcolm Price - Gizzi was dominant, tearing into Price with a savage glee throughout, scoring a knockdown in the 9th then the KO shot in the 10th round.

Joe Erskine vs Del Phillips - Erskine danced his way through this fight, doing just enough scoring to take the majority of the rounds 9-6, 9-6 and 11-4.

Johnny Williams vs Granville Lloyd - Williams was in complete control throughout, punishing Lloyd with every punch imagiable, scoring a knockdown in the 6th then finishing the job in the 7th with such vigor that the referee stepped in for the TKO.

Scott Gammer vs Mal Isaacs - Gammer was brilliant, controling the pace of this slugfest throughout, though both men were down it did go the distance, with the judges scoring the fight much closer than anyone in the audience saw it, 9-4, 7-6 and 8-7.

Question ...

Maybe this has been answered before, didn't want to dig back through the earlier posts, but couldn't help but notice you had like only 7 HWs for the United Kingdom but more recently 14 for Wales. How did you determine which fighters would be with the constituent entity (i.e. England, Wales, Scotland, etc) as opposed to the whole (UK or Great Britain)?
