We are back home to play the Ottawa Otters a 4 game series. They lost 3 of 4 in Memphis over the weekend, the last two games going to extra innings. Hopefully, their Bullpen is a mess for our series. We were 4-4 against them last year when they finished 92-70 in 2nd place in the North. They are tied for 6th in scoring with 4.06 runs per game (Jacksonville is #11 with 3.94). The Otters are 12th in fewest runs allowed with 4.20 per game (Jacksonville is up to #2 with 3.44!). Their run differential is -7 and ours is +25, still 5th in the MLB. Ottawa Otters (22-27 .449 10.5 GB in 6th place in the Northern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (30-20 .600 1 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) OTT: Tim Hill (26-L) (0-1 13.50 ERA 2.2 IP, 5 H, 1 HR, 0 BB, 0 SO) All-Star(2: 02-03) JAX: Dale Gilchrist (25-R) (2-4 3.04 ERA 56.1 IP, 60 H, 4 HR, 21 BB, 33 SO) Hill partially tore his labrum in his first start of the season. Once again, I forgot to file the paperwork on someone Pia bought a train ticket for... So I did it today... RP Mike Moore (26-R) was sent to Daytona (A) and we recalled RP Bob Craig (26-R). He has had trials with the Jays every season since 2001, so it has become a tradition. In each year, he has been progressively worse... 10.38 ERA in 2001, 21.00 in 2002 and 81.00 in 2003. It cannot get much worse than that! He has a career ERA of 13.78... The tradition will be terminated after this season, if he is a bust again.... Orlando Juice (27-28 .491 6.5 GB in 4th place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (34-22 .607 2 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) ORL: Clark Davis (26-R) (6-3 2.16 ERA 83.1 IP, 60 H, 5 HR, 23 BB, 67 SO) JAX: Al Calice (23-R) (2-4 3.56 ERA 65.2 IP, 60 H, 7 HR, 22 BB, 27 SO) Rookie Davis is their #1 starter. He is 3rd in the MLB in SO. We faced him in April and only scored 1 run on 7 hits and no walks with 6 strikeouts in 6 innings in a no decision that we won in 13 innings. Calice has not won a game since April 28, though he has pitched mostly decent games since. He gave up 2 runs on 10 hits, 1 home run and 1 walk with 2 strikeouts in 7 innings last time out in a no decision that we won in the bottom of the 9th. Yesterday was Ray McDonald's 24th birthday! And 3B Tom McDowell can't play today because a bout with the gout.... Trudy is hopeful he can play tomorrow. The Birmingham Barons are here to play a short 2 game set. They were swept at home in 3 games by Richmond over the weekend, being outscored, 25 to 6. We won a pair of games in Birmingham, April 19-20. They are 10th in scoring with 3.91 runs per game (Jacksonville is down to #13 with 3.86). 9 through 13 are only separated by a few runs. The Barons are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 4.96 per game (Jacksonville is #2 with 3.39). Yesterday's game was rained out and we tried to play a doubleheader today, but the weather would only let us get in one game. The other game will be made up in August, when we go to Columbus. So we have been shortchanged a home game this season... Columbus Explorers (37-24 .607 1.5 GB in 2nd place in the Northern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (39-22 .639 3.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) COL: Ron Vanderpool (31-R) (3-4 3.59 ERA 52.2 IP, 59 H, 2 HR, 19 BB, 26 SO in A Ball) JAX: Jim Baucom (22-L) (12-0 1.31 ERA 103.1 IP, 64 H, 3 HR, 13 BB, 97 SO) All-Star(2: 02-03) Vanderpool had 1 start in 2002, which he lost, and 10 starts in 2001, when he went 2.4 with a 3.39 ERA. This will be his season debut today. We faced him once in 2001 and beat him, but only scored 2 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks with 5 strikeouts in 8 innings. We beat their two best pitchers and will likely lose to the bum one.... Baucom gave up 1 run on 4 hits and no walks with 6 strikeouts in 7 innings last time out in a win. I used to look forward to each start of Baucom's with eager anticipation, but now I dread each one for fear of him losing, especially ones, like today, when he is facing a nondescript opponent on the mound for the other team. I know he has to lose eventually, but I would like the first one, at least, to be a 1 to 0 game against another star pitcher. Today is the trade deadline and we have not gotten any tempting offers. The Explorers offered us C Marc Barksdale (33-R), the 2-time Gold Glover, before they left town, but they wanted both of our young catchers that we picked in the last two drafts and I declined. Barksdale is old and has attitude problems. He would certainly help our offense this season, but not a whole heck of lot and not enough to deal with his issues. So we are standing pat the rest of the way.... We are in Charlotte to play the Hornets a short 2 game set. They swept the Arrows in 4 games in Indianapolis over the weekend and have won 7 in a row, but have not gained any ground on us, because we have won 7 in a row, too! We are 2-3 against them on the season and this is our first visit to North Carolina. They are 2nd in scoring with 4.73 runs per game (Jacksonville is #9 with 3.95). The Hornets are 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.13 per game (Jacksonville is #2 with 3.26). Their run differential is +37, 6th in the MLB, and ours is +43, now 3rd. Jacksonville Jays (40-22 .645 3 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) at Charlotte Hornets (33-29 .532 7 GB in 3rd place in the Southern Division) JAX: Dale Gilchrist (25-R) (3-5 2.85 ERA 79 IP, 78 H, 6 HR, 29 BB, 47 SO) CHAR: Angel Gomez (24-R) (7-1 2.38 ERA 83.1 IP, 68 H, 6 HR, 22 BB, 29 SO) Gilchrist gave up 3 runs on 7 hits, 1 home run and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts in 6.2 innings last time out in a no decision that we won. The Hornets got Gomez and P Franklin Garcia, who are 12-4 between them this season, from Hartford over the Winter for 1B Tom Barker, who is batting .165.... The Whalers' starting pitching, meanwhile, has a 5.05 cumulative ERA.... Gomez has pitched 2 shutouts in his last 4 starts, with a 1 hitter last time out. He was 9-14 with a 4.50 ERA in 208 IP as a rookie with Hartford last year. He led the MLB in HR allowed with 29. He was 0-1 in 2 starts against us and had a 9.82 ERA. 7.1 IP, 14 H, 2 HR, 3 BB, 4 SO. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) JACKSONVILLE 1: 2B Charlie Faber (33-R .296-230-0-25-.731-7 B+) 2: CF Cal Doty (27-L .326-242-5-28-.860-10 C+) 3: LF Ray McDonald (24-L .309-175-5-28-.864-5 B+) 4: 3B Tom McDowell (26-R .267-225-9-43-.772-4 C+) 5: 1B Jack Washburn (22-L .229-201-7-20-.661-16 B) 6: RF Fernando Tello (22-L .279-140-1-15-.667-0 C) Rookie 7: SS Bart Daw (32-R .239-155-3-18-.669-13 B+) 8: C Bert Swope (32-S .259-135-0-13-.619-1 B) 9: P Dale Gilchrist (25-R .440-25-0-1-.880-0 D) CHARLOTTE 1: RF Harold Evans (25-R .255-55-0-4-.596-1 A) 2: 1B Bruce McArthur (27-L .284-229-9-36-.808-0 A+) Gold Glove(2: 02-03) 3: 3B Larry Davis (29-S .328-244-1-31-.780-3 B) Silver Slugger(01)/All-Star(01) 4: LF Terry Graham (24-L .345-223-13-43-1.038-0 A+) 5: 2B Terry Wolf (32-L .304-217-8-40-.877-0 B) Silver Slugger/All-Star(2: 02-03) 6: SS Marty Derringer (26-R .243-169-3-18-.651-13 B) 7: CF Scott Damon (25-R .281-210-8-32-.795-1 B) 8: C Mike Tyra (28-R .215-163-4-18-.664-0 B) 9: P Angel Gomez (24-R .321-28-0-2-.714-0 D+) Game Start: 7:05 PM Ballpark: Charlotte Municipal Stadium Weather: 88 F, Clear Skies, with an 8 MPH wind blowing in from center Attendance: 12,809 Top of the First Charlie Faber strikes out... We had 14 hits and made 3 errors Charlotte had 5 hits and made 1 error A new season high in hits for a 9 inning game! 14 is not a lot to be your season high, though....
