May 24 - Buford Nolan (27-R( of Ottawa pitched a 5 hit shutout at home versus Buffalo. He walked 2 and struck out 8. It is the 3rd shutout of his career. He is now 5-1 with a 2.48 ERA in 9 starts. The Otters won, 4 to 0.
May 25 - Eli Kyzar (31-R) of Syracuse pitched a 4 hit shutout at Providence. He did not walk a batter and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit. It is the 9th shutout of his career. He is now 5-1 with a 1.95 ERA in 10 starts. The Sycamores won, 7 to 0.
May 27 - Rookie Brian Ragazzo (22-L) of New Orleans pitched a 2 hit shutout at home versus Hartford. He walked 2 and struck out 7. At bat, he had 3 hits with a double, the only extra base hit of the game, scored a run and had an RBI. It is the first shutout of his career. He is now 2-4 with a 3.29 ERA in 8 starts. We are back home to play the Ottawa Otters a 4 game series. They lost 3 of 4 in Memphis over the weekend, the last two games going to extra innings. Hopefully, their Bullpen is a mess for our series. We were 4-4 against them last year when they finished 92-70 in 2nd place in the North. They are tied for 6th in scoring with 4.06 runs per game (Jacksonville is #11 with 3.94). The Otters are 12th in fewest runs allowed with 4.20 per game (Jacksonville is up to #2 with 3.44!). Their run differential is -7 and ours is +25, still 5th in the MLB.

Trudy the Trainer has cleared Ray McDonald to play, so he was activated from the DL! He was only supposed to be out for a week, but it stretched to 18 days. RF Rob Worms (31-R) was sent back to Daytona (A).

The Orlando Juice are in town to play a 3 games series over the weekend. They just lost 3 of 4 in Hartford. We won 3 of 4 in Orlando, April 22-25. They are 7th in scoring with 3.98 runs per game (Jacksonville is #11 with 3.87). Orlando is first in fewest runs allowed with 3.15 per game (Jacksonville is #2 with 3.39). Their run differential is +44, the best in the South and 2nd best overall, and ours is +26, 5th best overall.

Once again, I forgot to file the paperwork on someone Pia bought a train ticket for... So I did it today... RP Mike Moore (26-R) was sent to Daytona (A) and we recalled RP Bob Craig (26-R). He has had trials with the Jays every season since 2001, so it has become a tradition. In each year, he has been progressively worse... 10.38 ERA in 2001, 21.00 in 2002 and 81.00 in 2003. It cannot get much worse than that! He has a career ERA of 13.78... The tradition will be terminated after this season, if he is a bust again....

Yesterday was Ray McDonald's 24th birthday!

And 3B Tom McDowell can't play today because a bout with the gout.... Trudy is hopeful he can play tomorrow.

The Birmingham Barons are here to play a short 2 game set. They were swept at home in 3 games by Richmond over the weekend, being outscored, 25 to 6. We won a pair of games in Birmingham, April 19-20. They are 10th in scoring with 3.91 runs per game (Jacksonville is down to #13 with 3.86). 9 through 13 are only separated by a few runs. The Barons are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 4.96 per game (Jacksonville is #2 with 3.39). The Barons have 11 pitchers on the DL right now and only one of them is expected back within the next two months and he is a 31 year old rookie who has actually never pitched in the MLB. 7 of their 10 current pitchers are rookies. Their run differential is -59, 2nd worst in the MLB to Hartford's -81, and ours is +27, now 4th best.

Staab was a 6th round pick in the 2003 B Leagues Draft. He was the #98 prospect this Spring. His first MLB outing was a relief appearance that did not go very well and he allowed 6 hits and a walk and 4 runs and only got 2 outs. But his next two outings were starts and he pitched well both times, only allowing 4 total runs in 14 innings, though he did walk 10 batters.

Marsh has had 3 starts this season and allowed only 1 run each time, but only got 1 win. Last time out, he gave up 6 hits and 3 walks with 6 strikeouts in 7 innings in a no decision that we won in the bottom of the 9th.

The Columbus Explorers are here to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just won a pair of games in Ottawa. We were 3-5 against them last year when they finished 79-83 in 5th place in the North. They are 5th in scoring with 4.39 runs per game (Jacksonville is #11 with 3.90). The Explorers are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.61 per game (Jacksonville is #2 with 3.29). Their run differential is +46, 3rd best in the MLB, and ours is +36, 4th best.

Yesterday's game was rained out and we tried to play a doubleheader today, but the weather would only let us get in one game. The other game will be made up in August, when we go to Columbus. So we have been shortchanged a home game this season...

I used to look forward to each start of Baucom's with eager anticipation, but now I dread each one for fear of him losing, especially ones, like today, when he is facing a nondescript opponent on the mound for the other team. I know he has to lose eventually, but I would like the first one, at least, to be a 1 to 0 game against another star pitcher.

Today is the trade deadline and we have not gotten any tempting offers. The Explorers offered us C Marc Barksdale (33-R), the 2-time Gold Glover, before they left town, but they wanted both of our young catchers that we picked in the last two drafts and I declined. Barksdale is old and has attitude problems. He would certainly help our offense this season, but not a whole heck of lot and not enough to deal with his issues. So we are standing pat the rest of the way....

We are in Charlotte to play the Hornets a short 2 game set. They swept the Arrows in 4 games in Indianapolis over the weekend and have won 7 in a row, but have not gained any ground on us, because we have won 7 in a row, too! We are 2-3 against them on the season and this is our first visit to North Carolina. They are 2nd in scoring with 4.73 runs per game (Jacksonville is #9 with 3.95). The Hornets are 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.13 per game (Jacksonville is #2 with 3.26). Their run differential is +37, 6th in the MLB, and ours is +43, now 3rd.

Hopefully, their Bullpen is a mess for our series. We were 4-4 against them last year when they finished 92-70 in 2nd place in the North. They are tied for 6th in scoring with 4.06 runs per game (Jacksonville is #11 with 3.94). The Otters are 12th in fewest runs allowed with 4.20 per game (Jacksonville is up to #2 with 3.44!). Their run differential is -7 and ours is +25, still 5th in the MLB. RP Mike Moore (26-R) was sent to Daytona (A) and we recalled RP Bob Craig (26-R). He has had trials with the Jays every season since 2001, so it has become a tradition. In each year, he has been progressively worse... 10.38 ERA in 2001, 21.00 in 2002 and 81.00 in 2003. It cannot get much worse than that! He has a career ERA of 13.78... The tradition will be terminated after this season, if he is a bust again.... The Birmingham Barons are here to play a short 2 game set. They were swept at home in 3 games by Richmond over the weekend, being outscored, 25 to 6. We won a pair of games in Birmingham, April 19-20. They are 10th in scoring with 3.91 runs per game (Jacksonville is down to #13 with 3.86). 9 through 13 are only separated by a few runs. The Barons are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 4.96 per game (Jacksonville is #2 with 3.39). The Barons have 11 pitchers on the DL right now and only one of them is expected back within the next two months and he is a 31 year old rookie who has actually never pitched in the MLB. 7 of their 10 current pitchers are rookies. Their run differential is -59, 2nd worst in the MLB to Hartford's -81, and ours is +27, now 4th best. Posts: 16,142	Wednesday, June 9, 2004 Birmingham Barons (24-33 .421 11.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (36-22 .621 3 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) BIRM: Al Staab (22-L) (0-0 4.91 ERA 14.2 IP, 15 H, 2 HR, 11 BB, 9 SO) Rookie JAX: Mike Marsh (23-R) (3-0 1.09 ERA 24.2 IP, 21 H, 0 HR, 10 BB, 12 SO) Rookie Staab was a 6th round pick in the 2003 B Leagues Draft. He was the #98 prospect this Spring. His first MLB outing was a relief appearance that did not go very well and he allowed 6 hits and a walk and 4 runs and only got 2 outs. But his next two outings were starts and he pitched well both times, only allowing 4 total runs in 14 innings, though he did walk 10 batters. Marsh has had 3 starts this season and allowed only 1 run each time, but only got 1 win. Last time out, he gave up 6 hits and 3 walks with 6 strikeouts in 7 innings in a no decision that we won in the bottom of the 9th. The other game will be made up in August, when we go to Columbus. So we have been shortchanged a home game this season... The Explorers offered us C Marc Barksdale (33-R), the 2-time Gold Glover, before they left town, but they wanted both of our young catchers that we picked in the last two drafts and I declined. Barksdale is old and has attitude problems. He would certainly help our offense this season, but not a whole heck of lot and not enough to deal with his issues. So we are standing pat the rest of the way.... We are in Charlotte to play the Hornets a short 2 game set. They swept the Arrows in 4 games in Indianapolis over the weekend and have won 7 in a row, but have not gained any ground on us, because we have won 7 in a row, too! We are 2-3 against them on the season and this is our first visit to North Carolina. They are 2nd in scoring with 4.73 runs per game (Jacksonville is #9 with 3.95). The Hornets are 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.13 per game (Jacksonville is #2 with 3.26). Their run differential is +37, 6th in the MLB, and ours is +43, now 3rd.
