Trouble was there was no market. We only had three/four channels, two of which were BBC. Moreover when there was some competition for the highlights in the late 70s the Office of Fair trading stepped in and said the rights had to be split between the two. As a consequence the money on offer was a pittance and the clubs were more concerned about losing gate receipts. In fact one season there wasn’t any coverage at all for the opening weeks as no deal could be agreed - anyone remember what year that was... 88ish wasn’t it? All this TV malarkey is very new to us oldsters... still so is the concept of having to buy tickets days in advance and sit down in a sanitised stadium. I guess this is one reason I fled to non-league. No TV, pay on the gate and stand on the terracing with a pint of beer at 3PM on a Saturday. The way football is meant to be. |

All we need is someone to bemoan the loss of the Saturday Pink and the football trains and we'll be totally lost on the nostalgia trip

He certainly wasn't near the top of my manager wish list. He's a nice guy but far too cautious. I think he's probably just a low maintenance guy who'll tow Shepherd's PR line and keep the manager's seat warm until Shearer decides to take over. Shepherd always backs his manager with cash but is a PR disaster, seems to be far too hands on re: transfers and always cocks up big time when it comes to the hiring and firing of managers. Probably the most important job a chairman has to do. He always seems to be looking for a quick fix manager to sort an immediate problem out, rather than getting a guy in with a long term plan and letting him get on with it. By the way, did that Chimbonda guy manage to find a 'big club' that actually wanted him?

In Serbias first ever game ther beat the Czechs 2-0. Is this the end of yop flight football for the Czech Republic? Sad to see it all come so suddenly to an end.
And the Norwegians yet again get another result against the Brazilians in Dungas first match as coach.

http://blogs.manchestereveningnews.c...that_jack.html Sky Sports may have helped teams bring top quality names into English football, they may have helped teams survive but one thing they have done is destroy the history of the game in England you ask say 100 fans how many titles have Liverpool won and I bet 50% at least and more likely 70% would say none because they think that football began in 1992 no knowing that Liverpool have won 18 top division titles in England. I had to laugh on Sunday when Richard Keys stated that it was the first Charity Shield when they showed highlights of the Liverpool v Leeds Utd game played in 1992, what he failed to mention was that it was the first shown on Sky but infact the Charity Shield had been played since 1908 when Man Utd beat QPR 4-0. Like I say I'm thankful of some things they have done for football but it's not all good what they have done and the history of football stretches back to 1848 when the first rules were worked out and the football league was started in 1888, to an American it would be like ESPN saying Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Shoeless Joe never exsisted as ESPN weren't around at that time. |

Great recap UKHS. I agree 100% with your sentiments. Its sad that our media only notice things they have tape of. Its like the world didnt exist before that.

Wigan Athletic 1 v 0 Newcastle United Wigan Athletic 1 v 0 Newcastle United Newcastle United 3 v 1 Wigan Athletic* * Wigan Athletic were in front 1-0 when Newcastle were given a dodgy penalty even stated as a dodgy penalty by the Newcastle media and before that penalty Wigan had to take off both central defenders due to injury in De Zeuuw and Jackson, so they ended up playing 70 minutes with a back four consisting of Baines, Zeigler, Chimbonda and Scharner 2 left backs a right back and a central midfielder in the back four. Pssst wouldn't Camera have been your top goal scorer last season if he'd been in a Newcastle kit , yeah Chimbonda's still here although expect to see him play right wing against Newcastle as that's where he's been playing pre season.I'd expect the Wigan team to be. 4-4-2 13 GK Kirkland 26 LB Baines 5 CB Hall 16 CB De Zeuuw 17 RB Boyce 10 LM McCulloch 14 CM Landzaat 18 CM Scharner 2 RM Chimbonda 7 ST Camara 9 ST Heskey Subs: 12 GK Pollitt, 16 RM Valencia, 22 ST Connolly, 21 CM Cywka, 4 CB Jackson. Don't think there will be much differance to that although he may not risk both Valencia and Cywka on the bench as both are young but full of pace and skill. By all accounts don't you get relegated this season, after all isn't that Roeders record good first season relegated the next well technically he was in charge last season so this is his second season
