June 1912 Baseball Report
from the Sporting Way, June 1, 1912:
BAD TIDINGS IN GOTHAM - It's become a joke around the Federal League: How bad are the New York Giants? So bad they're thinking of renaming the team the New York Gnats. Yuck-yuck-yuck. And yuck is just what Giants fans have been saying as the team is on pace for a historic level of ineptitude. Right now the Giants stand at 15-42, that's just a .263 win percentage and are already 21 games behind the first-place Boston Minutemen. How does a team lose that often? Well, to start off with, you could score just 2.9 runs per game when the league AVERAGE (which you're dragging down, by the way) is 3.9 runs. And on the flip side, you can allow 4.7 runs (again that average is 3.9) per game. This team is so bad that they have not hit a single round tripper this season and the best hitter on the team is light-hitting second baseman Amby McConnell who's swatting a robust .283 - the team is hitting .241, by the way. Baltimore's star shortstop is hitting .405 thus far, and leads the Dixie League in virtually every important hitting category. Sebastian heads the list in batting, on-base, slugging and runs batted in, among a few others. Now if his team could only get out of last place... Code:

July 1912 Baseball Report
from the Sporting Way, July 2, 1912:
TRIO OF HURLERS LEAD PITTSBURGH'S PENNANT CHASE - The Rivermen's top pitchers: Walter Johnson, Ralph Caldwell and Otto Hess have an offensive middling Pittsburgh club sitting atop the Federal League standings. Hess is having a breakout season, with 16 victories and a 2.33 ERA. Both Johnson and Caldwell have chalked up 13 wins. The team's 3.11 ERA is the 2nd best in the Federal League and they've allowed the fewest walks while striking out the most hitters in the league. Code:

Black Jack Ups the Ante
from the diary of Maj. Jesse Tannehill, CSA:
July 11, 1912 - Apparently General Pershing has been burning up the telegraph lines to Richmond the last few weeks. This morning I received a message from Pershing's headquarters that three more divisions will be landing in Vera Cruz this week and they will immediately entrain for Leesburg. The plan is to have one division remain in Leesburg for an eventual push south against the Zapatistas. The other two will push north and try to flush out Villa, pushing him towards the waiting Mexican Division, where it is assumed that General Huerta will do his duty and crush the rebels. A good plan, but I feel that something will go awry - because something usually does. July 18, 1912 - The three divisions are en route from Vera Cruz to Leesburg. Huerta received official orders from General Pershing to deploy the division southwest of Chihuahua City where we are to wait for the regulars to push Villa right onto our guns. It should be a matter of no more than three weeks. Huerta, of course, grumbles that we are not ready - and I must admit that I agree - we are still short of men and morale is very low. We are also short on supplies. Unless the regulars break Villa's men along the way, it may be that we will be the ones pushed onto the guns.

August 1912 Baseball Report
from the Confederate Baseball Weekly, August 3, 1912:
DIETRICH HAS TIGRES ROARING - The once-doormat Santo Domingo Tigres have risen into first place behind the MVP performance of last year's big trade pickup, outfielder Rudel Dietrich. The German ex-patriate is leading the league with a .362 average, has a league-best .493 slugging percentage and has scored 51 runs while driving in 44. Dietrich's presence in the lineup has benefited others as well - Luis Santop has clouted seven circuit clouts and both Jules Thomas and Rigoberto Vargas have driven in more than 40 runs. The Tigres will need Dietrich and the others to keep producing - their lead is only one game over the Houston Texans and the last-place San Juan Caballeros are only six back in the very tight Caribbean League race. Battle of Chihuahua
from the Confederate Military Review, September 1, 1912:
LARGEST FIGHT OF MEXICAN "ACTION" By R.A. Tittle for CMR When General John Pershing was given overall command of the nation's peace-keeping forces in Mexico, he was also allocated what the War Department considered an adequate number of troops to finish dealing with the rebellion. Just a few months later, with Pancho Villa and his men riding circles around the Confederate Army, Pershing was forced to go hat in hand to General Stuart in Richmond, requesting reinforcements. Those reinforcements arrived in Mexico in July and Pershing wasted no time putting them to use. Sending one-third of the new troops, designated the 3rd Corps under Brig. General Yancy Hampton south to locate and destroy the forces of Emiliano Zapata was step one in Pershing's emerging plan. The second step was to take the other two-thirds, as 2nd Corps under Brig. General Carter Winston, and send them north to flush out Villa and send him north, where the 1st Corps, under Brig. General Victoriano Huerta, would be waiting for them. In theory, a sound plan. Problems developed in the implementation, not the least of which was that Pershing himself placed too much trust in the 1st Corps, which was a built up Mexican Division which had already been shown to be lacking when confronted by Pancho Villa's guerillas. Early in August, the 2nd Corps successfully "flushed" Villa from his mountain hideaway, and began pushing him towards Chihuahua City where Huerta waited. Villa fought a delaying action along the road, skirmishing with the advance elements of Winston's forces, but unable to disengage from the 2nd Corps. On August 8, Villa's men suddenly found themselves with the 1st Corps at their backs. Showing his battle-honed leadership, Villa somehow managed to deploy his men and attack Huerta before the 2nd Corps could fully be brought to bear on his men. In some of the most savage fighting of the campaign, Villa's men tore up the front of the 1st Corps, wounding General Huerta in the process. Only a brave, and some would say foolhardy, flank attack by the cavalry under Captain George S. Patton prevented a rout. Patton's men suffered heavy casualties, but bought enough time for the 2nd Corps to get into the fray. Winston's men hit the rebels hard, and Villa was forced to attempt a breakout - which was ultimately successful, but he left behind the bulk of his men, either dead, wounded, or captured. The face of the conflict in Northern Mexico is now different. Villa's power is broken - at least for the time being as he remains at-large and still enjoys tremendous popular appeal with the citizenry. Pershing has his victory, though the 1st Corps is a shambles and its commanding general is in the hospital. The 2nd Corps has been blooded and it is expected to head south to aid in the campaign against Zapata. As always in Mexico, nothing is easy and the campaign still appears far from over.

September 1912 Baseball Report
from the Sporting Way, September 2, 1912:
ROAD WOES SINK ONE-TIME JUGGERNAUT - The Philadelphia Patriots, who once ruled the Federal League with the iron fist of John J. McGraw, have fallen on hard times in 1912. The reason is their horrible road performance this season. The Patriots' have a solid 41-30 home record, but a putrid 21-50 mark away from their home confines. "We stink," said McGraw when asked for a reason behind his team's performance. "We're getting old and it's looking like it is team to remake the team." One-time star Honus Wagner is, at 38, a shell of his former self and hitting just .205 while current star Saul Eiskenkamp, though just 28, is having his second straight year of sub-300 hitting after putting up three straight seasons with an average of at least .329. Not known for patience, it will be interesting to see what McGraw does in the off-season to return his team to contention. Code:

Hugo Cienfuegos and Turi Pinuelas lead the way for Houston, the team displaced from its Mexican before the 1911 season because of the on-going rebellion. Cienfuegos leads the team in every important hitting category and though his name isn't appearing any many league leaderboards, he is very much the heart of the Texans lineup. Pinuelas is the ace of the staff, with a league-best 19 victories and a 2.46 ERA which leads the team. The Santo Domingo Tigres would appear - on paper - to have the better chance of taking the flag. Led by the power pitching of Pedro De Calvo, who is third in ERA in the league (2.24) and second in strikeouts (244), the pitching staff is tough. But the lineup is what is winning games for the Tigres as Rudel Dietrich remains atop the hitting leaderboard with a .357 mark and names like Vargas, Santop and Thomas also are sprinkled around the league batting leaderboards, all of which adds up to the #1 offense in the Caribbean. It will all be decided shortly. Code:

If you're reading The Greater Baseball Co-Prosperity Sphere this is a repeat:
I just moved last week and have been busy setting up in the new house. I apologize for the delay and will get things rolling again soon.

1912 Season Wrap-Up
from the Confederate Baseball Weekly, October 5, 1912:
TIGRES ROAR TO CHAMPIONSHIP - The surprising Santo Domingo Tigres are the champions of the Confederate Baseball, having won the Caribbean League by the slimmest of margins, finishing 81-69 to Houston's 80-70. The Dominica-based team then toar through the Dixie League champion Steamers like one of the hurricanes which batter their island, winning the Confederate Series four games to one. With a well-rounded team, the Tigres outclassed the Steamers, who had the gaudiest record in Confederate ball, with an outstanding 92-58 record. from the Sporting Way, October 5, 1912: NO U.S.-C.S. SERIES, BUT PITTSBURGH CLAIMS "WORLD'S" TITLE - The Pittsburgh Rivermen, winners of 103 regular season games, and then the U.S. Championship Series over Pacific League titlist Portland, have staked a claim to the 'world's title' despite the fact that U.S. and Confederate baseball officials agreed to not hold their annual series (due to the conflict in Mexico) this season. Few would argue the Rivermen's case, though I'm sure that south of the border, the Confederates would certainly take umbrage. "Maybe next year, Johnny Reb", say the Rivermen.

Chasing Zapata
from the diary of Lt. Col. Jesse Tannehill, CSA
November 13, 1912 - A day of mixed emotions for me. General Pershing called me into his office to deliver two bits of news: first, that I had been promoted to Lt. Colonel, with the accompanying raise in pay (that's the good news). Second was that I am being sent south to help in the pursuit of Emiliano Zapata's band of guerillas. While it will be good to get away from General Huerta (who is still recuperating from his injuries), I had been hoping for a quiet winter away from chasing Mexican guerillas around the mountains. November 22, 1912 - Got off the train in the coastal city of Acapulco. This is a beautiful place, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It's also swamped with the men and materials of General Hampton's 3rd Corps. I can see what Hampton would use Acapulco as his HQ. It cuts off Zapata from seaborne supply (rumor has it that the Germans, Russians and Yankees have been shipping supplies into Acapulco to help the rebels) and is a damn comfortable billet. I brought with me written orders for Hampton from Pershing to expedite the pursuit, so I expect to be back in action shortly. December 19, 1912 - Less than a week til Christmas and I'm trotting alongside General Hampton on the road to Vera Cruz. We've hit Zapata twice, and both times the Mexican has managed to extricate his forces and disappear. This makes me wonder how the Mexicans breed these ingenious leaders. Zapata definitely shares the hit-and-run skill Villa used against us in the North. December 25, 1912 - Merry Christmas from Vera Cruz. Zapata's band is supposedly (according to our ever-faulty intelligence) holed up just north of the city. Hampton has requested a naval bombardment of the area by the CSS Texas, our big battleship, which happens to be in port at Vera Cruz, followed by a frontal assault by the 3rd Corps. All of this to commence at dawn tomorrow. We wouldn't want to ruin anyone's holiday, after all. December 27, 1912 - Zapata has done it again. Either our intelligence is worse than I thought, or Zapata can count precognition among his many skills. The Texas' shells fell on empty hills - when we reached the area, we found a lot of splintered trees and huge craters, but no wreckage or bodies. It looks like this campaign won't end any time soon.

Upping the Ante
from the Columbia Patriot, January 11, 1913:
TAFT SPEECH INFLAMES CONFEDERACY - A recent speech by President William Howard Taft - his first since his re-election in November - has inflamed relations between the Confederacy and the United States, according to sources in Richmond. "As long as the Confederate government insists on imposing an illegal occupation of the nation of Mexico, it is extremely unlikely that relations with the United States can be normalized." Taft said in a speech to a veterans group in Philadelphia on December 29 of last year. The Confederate ambassador to the United States immediately filed a protest with the U.S. government. The Taft administration has yet to respond publicly to the protest.

Unfortunatley I am going to put AHD on indefinite hiatus. I'm having some problems with the new version of the sim and I think I may need to rebuild the league file in order to take the dynasty where I want it to go (with WWI on the immediate horizon big things would be happening.)
I just don't have the energy for such a massive undertaking at the moment, so I will put AHD on hold and come back to it when the batteries have recharged. The dynasty's not dead - it will come back, and I promise some nice chaos when the Great War rolls around...
