Week 16

Current Week: 3-4 (69-30 - GB (+18) )
Next Week: 3 vs Annapolis Admirals, 3 @ Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 81 (+1)
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 579 (2nd)
Avg: .286 (2nd)
Runs Against: 336 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.27 (1st)
Pen ERA: 2.56 (1st)
Def Eff: .712 (1st)

Minor Moves: I contacted our AAA Manager Alfredo Patino and told him to get Javier Janchez familiar with playing LF. He is only a 6 in LF, but if he is going to make the squand next season LF is going to be most likely spot. He is a 16 in CF and a 10 in RF. Range 17, Error 15, Arm 16. The transistion to LF shouldn't be a problem.

Game 93
Norfolk 1, Baltimore 5
Jose Matos (15-3) lost for the second time in a row, as we just can't solve the Barons. matos went 6.2 innings, giving up 8 hits and 5 runs, while striking out 6. The offense could only manage 5 hits, with 5 different players getting them. Jesus Rivera and Augusto Rodriquez both doubled, Rivera drove in the lone run.

Transaction News: Kent Davis was activated from the DL and promptly inserted into CF, replacing Cody Johnson, and moved into the lead off slot. Mauro Candelaria was shift down to the

Game 94
Norfolk 4, Baltimore 2
Ron Reilly (6-6) got back to even with a solid 8 inning performance. Reilly allowed 2 runs, and was the benefactor of 4 double plays. Dalton Whitaker closed the door for the save (29). The offense showed more life today, getting 11 hits, including 3 by Kent Davis (welcome back). Roberto Perez, Jose Rodriquez and Augusto Rodriquez each added 2 hits.

Team News: Joe Parker reached out again, this is his second letter to me, asking for an extension. I would think about offering him one if a) I had the money and b) if I didn't overpay for him in the first place. Hopefully one of my 2 prospects will be ready to fill the #5 whole next season and I won't miss Joe.

Game 95
Norfolk 6, Washington 3
Sun Ho (ND) was the tough luck pitcher, going 7 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 ER) on 5 hits. Will Rose threw 1 perfect inning and Dalton Whitaker followed with another for the save (30). With a 3-run outburst in the 9th the Cav's broke the tie, thanks to doubles by Augusto Rodriquez and Kent Davis, both went 3-4 with 2 RBI's. Kent Davis added a solo HR (2).

Game 96
Norfolk 2, Washington 4
Joe Parker (7-5) took the loss as the Cav's couldn't solve Barney Butler. Parker went 7.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 4 runs, including 2 HR's. The offense had 13 hits on the day, but left 10 men on base. Mauro Candelaria lead the way with 3 hits, and Derek Campbell, King Brock and Augusto Rodriquez each had 2.

Game 97
Norfolk 1, Washington 11
Miguel Contreras (14-2) took the loss, eventhough he probably didn't deserve it, as he went 6.2 innings, scattering 10 hits and giving up 2 runs. Jamie King got lit up in 1/3 of an inning giving up 5 runs on 3 hits, including 2 HR's, and Ron Harris didnt' fair much better, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits in 2/3. The offense was stymied only getting 4 singles from 4 different players on the day (Kent Davis, King Brock, Julio Romero and Jose Escamilla).

Game 98
Norfolk 6, Washington 4
Jose Matos (16-3) ended his 2 game losing streak with a fine 7 inning outing. Giving up 10 hits and 4 runs while striking out 9. Dalton Whitaker threw a perfect 9th for the save (31). The Offense was lead by Derek Campbell, who went 2-5 with a HR (22) and a double and Jose Escamilla who doubled in 2 with his lone hit.

Game 99
Annapolis 5, Norfolk 3
Ron Reilly (6-7) took the loss, going all 9, giving up 12 hits, 5 walks and 5 runs. The offense had 7 players get a hit, with Roberto Perez driving in 2 runs. King Brock and Derek Campbell each doubled.

Around the League:
  • Peter Peters, New Castle Colonials, had to be helped off the field after making a great defensive play. Lucky for the Colonials he will only miss a week with a stiff back. .333-21-57
  • George Corbett, Lewes Braves, has hit in 20 straight.
  • Grant Wright, Lewes Bravs, will miss another 3 weeks sufering a set-back during rehab. The 5* free-agent signee has missed the whole season with a torn back muscle.
  • Geoffrey Bayles, Milford Clippers, will miss 4-5 months with a torn rotator cuff. 1-3 in 27 games.
  • Billy Moore of the Milford Clippers, and one of the games preimer power bats, will miss two months with a shoulder injury. Moore has 29 HR's and 73 RBI on the season.
  • Reid McCabe of the expansion Salisbury Ports is going to miss 6 weeks after a post-game tantrum. Reid punched his locker and broke his wrist.
  • Tomas Reyes of the Richmond Cardinals, tore a ligament in his thumb and will miss 4 weeks. .280-2-16

Milestone Watch:
Shooting to join Marcos Estrada and Barney Butler as 1000K men:
  • Miguel Contreras, Norfolk Cavaliers, now has 993 K's.
Miguel got roughed up in his lone start this week, only striking out 1 over 6.2 innings. His lowest total of the season (not including the game he left after 1 IP with an injury).

Players of the Week:
Delaware: George Corbett, Lewes Braves, 13-27, 3 HR's, 7 RBI
MarVa: Abraham Thomas, Washington Senators, 11-28 4 HR's, 11 RBI (all 4 bombs came against the Cav's!)

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (124.5)
2) Georgetown Sixteens (122.9)
3) Wilmington Iron Pigs (113.3)
4) Ocean City Tourists (106.9)
5) Chesapeake Blue Crabs (106.2)

GM Notes: The best word to describe the the 2nd half Cav's? Inconsistent. I don't mind a bad team losing a lot or a good team winning a lot, but it drives me crazy when the teams are just up and down and you don't know what to expect. I hope this team can get squared away before the playoffs... King Brock has played pretty good since being called up. He is hitting .266-8-37, so I have been pleased. I'd like to see his average up a little higher, but all he is putting together a nice rookie season. He should be a staple in this lineup for a few years... I can't fault the pitching staff, yes we have a couple of rough outings, but all in all they seem to be really throwing the ball well and keeping us in the games... The offense on the other hand has been all over the place. Hopefully with Kent Davis back we can get some more consistency in our lineup. Sometimes being up 17 games isn't a good thing.

Week 17

Current Week: 5-1 (74-31 - GB (+22) )
Next Week: 1 @ Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs, 4 vs Ellicott City Express, 2 vs Chesapeake Blue Crabs
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 81 (+1)
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 621 (2nd)
Avg: .289 (2nd)
Runs Against: 364 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.34 (1st)
Pen ERA: 2.74 (1st)
Def Eff: .713 (1st)

Minor Lineup Change: I finally broke down and took Jesus Rivera out of the primary starting lineup. He will start against lefties, but playign second and starting against righties will be Jose Escamilla. Rivera is hitting .242-5-25 on the season, but hasn't homered since May and is still living off his explosive April in which he hit .377-3-8, including 4 of his 5 triples. He is another guy who I drafted in the innagural draft and feel attached to. Escamilla will bring better D on the field, and should hit the ball better as well.

Game 100
Annapolis 11, Norfolk 8
Sun Ho (10-4) continued to slump after a hot start, was not able to make it out of the 2nd inning today, giving up 6 runs on 4 hits and 5 walks in 1.2 innings. Ron Harris came in an didn't fair much better giving up 5 runs on 4 hits in 1.1 innings. Ivan Pineda and Derek Carter halted the bleeding, each going 3 shut-out innings. The offense tried to fight their way back in, but fell short. Lead by Augusto Rodriquez, who had 3 hits and 2 runs, and Kent Davis and Gilberto Ramos who each added 2 hits. Jose Rodriquez went deep (20) in the first inning.

Game 101
Annapolis 3, Norfolk 5
Joe Parker (8-5) is showing me that he was worth the investment, going 8.2 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits before turning the ball over to Dalton Whitaker who got the save (32). Kent Davis, Roberto Perez, Derek Campbell and King Brock all had 2 hits, wiht Perez driving in 2 runs to lead the offense.

Game 102
Annapolis 1, Norfolk 5
Miguel Contreras (15-2) went 7.2 innings of 3 hit ball, giving up 1 and striking out 7. The offense was lead by recently removed from the starting lineup, Jesus Rivera who had 3 hits, including 2-run HR (6). Roberto Perez and Jose Rodriquez each added 2 hits.

Game 103
Norfolk 7, Virginia Beach 1
Jose Matos (17-3) got back on the winning side of thigns, going 7 innings allowing 1 run on 6 hits and striking out 9. Jame King went the final 1.2 innings for the save (3). The offense had 13 hits, with Kent Davis and Jose Rodriquez each getting 3. King Brock added 2 hits. Derek Campbell went deep (23) and Campbell. J Rodriquez and Perez each had 2 RBI.

Game 104
Norfolk 9, Virginia Beach 5
Ron Reilly (7-7) went 7 strong innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs, he has battled control issues all season, as he walked 4 more today. The offense had another double digit hit day, getting 16 today, lead by Gilberto Ramos with 3, and Jesus Rivera, August Rodirquez, Derek Campbell and Kent Davis all had 2. Derek Cambpell went deep again (24) and drove in 2.

Injury News: Kent Davis was pulled from the game in the second when he pulled up lame after his 2nd hit of the day. He is being examined by our medical staff, and we are anxiously awaiting the word.

Game 105
Norfolk 8, Virginia Beach 7
Sun Ho (ND) strugged his way through 5.1 innings, allowing 7 hits and 5 runs, while walking 5. Derek Carter (1-0) got his first big league decision going 1 inning of perfect relief. Dalton Whitaker struggled in the 9th giving up 2 runs, including a HR, but took home the save (33). The offense had another 13 hits, with King Brock and Kent Davis each stroking 3 hits. Brock and Jose Rodriquez each added 2 RBI.

Injury News: Kent Davis has a mild ankle sprain and will be DTD for about 5 days. No roster moves will be made. Cody Johnson and Gilberto Ramos will share CF duties in the meantime.

Around the League:
  • The Lewes Braves and the Wilmington Iron Pigs pulled off a big trade, as the Braves sent George Corbett (.333-17-53 / 4.5*) over to the Iron Pigs for Leonard Davis (.300-12-59 / 5*).
  • George Corbett stretched his hit streak to 25 games, in his first game as an Iron Pig... His streak was ended at 28 games.
  • George Corbett signed 3-year extenion with the Iron Pigs, shortly after they aquired him.
  • The Ocean City Tourists shipped Roberto Villalobos (.320-16-48 / 3.5*) (who just signed a 7-year etension) to the Chesapeake Blue Crabs for Cristo Canseco (.276-10-40 / 3.5*).
  • Roberto Johnson of the Georgetown Sixteens, just aquired from the Milton Brewers is going to be out 4 weeks with a strained PCL. He was hitting .414-2-9 since coming over.
  • The Ellicott City Express shipped Juan Zamora (2-5 9 SV 5.03 / 3*) over to the Wilmignton Iron Pigs for the #18th prospect in the DBL Harold Hutchins.
  • Virgil White got his wish, as the Milton Brewers shipped him off to the Richmond Cardinals. The Cardinals got the best of this deal, getting a draft pick and money and only givng up 3 lesser prospects.

Milestone Watch:
Miguel Contreras joined Marcos Estrada and Barney Butler as the only players in the DBL who have reached the 1000K plateu. Miguel Contreras struck out 7 Annapolis Admirals on his way to his 15th win. Leaving him with exactly 1000K's on his career.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Don White, Wilmington Iron Pigs, 10-23 2 HR's 8 RBI
MarVa: Kyle Boutte, Ocean City Tourists, 8-24 5 HR's, 10 RBI, 7 Runs

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (133.9)
2) Dover Generals (113.6)
3) Ocean City Tourists (111.4)
4) Milford Clippers (105.4)
5) Georgetown Sixteens (122.9)

GM Notes: We are coming into the final 2 months of the season and we have a 20+ game lead, its time to start thinking about how this team can prepare for the playoffs (Barring a collapse of monumental proportions). Our line-up is pretty solid, yes inconsistent, but solid, the only question mark will be second base... As for pitching we are hurting at the #4 spot. Sun Ho just isn't what he was at the beginning of the season, and with no options left I am not sure what to do with him. This is the last day of the trading deadline, so I may just have to ride the waves and see what happens. I will have till the end of August to determine if I should bring up Arturo Ramirez or Adrian Otero for SP help... Derek Carter was brought up to give the bullpen some help earlier this season and he has pretty much flew under the radar. So far in 12 games / 20 innings Derek has given up only 1 run and has a 1-0 record with a 0.45 ERA. Not too shabby for the kid... 2 more months, lets hope we can stay healthy and get our consistency back.

July 2017 in Review

Players of the Month:
Delaware Conference:

Batter of the Month: Don White, Wilmington Iron Pigs
Don White battered Delaware Conference pitchers all July and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award. "I've been around DELMARVA Baseball League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 33-year-old White told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month." In 28 games, White hit .373 with 8 home runs, 34 RBIs and scored 23 runs. This season White is swinging the bat at a .295 pace. He has hit 24 home runs and scored 68 times, while driving in 93. His on-base percentage is .359 and he has played in 106 games.

Pitcher of the Month: Anthony Dundee, Georgetown Sixteens
Anthony Dundee's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-1 in July, the 34-year-old Georgetown hurler has been named Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month. He fanned 37 in 49 innings, logged an ERA of 2.39 and allowed opponents to hit .239 against him. So far this year Dundee has made 23 starts, tossed 181.2 innings, struck out 119 batters and walked 28. His record is 16-5 with a 2.28 ERA and he has limited opposing teams to a .244 batting average.

Rookie of the Month: Felix Martinez, Seaford Blue Jays
A veritable toddler to the Delaware Conference, Félix Martínez just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for July. Over the past month the 25-year-old catcher for Seaford hit .326 with 30 hits, 6 home runs and 18 RBI. He also logged 14 walks and compiled a .411 on-base percentage. Martínez currently has a .250 batting average with 86 hits, 9 homers, 34 RBIs, 34 runs scored and a .321 OBP.

MarVa Conference:

Batter of the Month: Kyle Boutte, Ocean City Tourists
Kyle Boutte is not used to being associated with Batter of the Month-caliber players, but today the Ocean City first baseman joined that select company when the MarVa Conference announced the results of July's voting. Boutte totaled 32 hits, 7 walks, 12 home runs, 23 RBIs and 24 runs scored last month to put together a .317 batting average and .367 on-base percentage. Currently Boutte is batting .307 with 12 home runs and 29 RBIs.

Pitcher of the Month: Jorge Padilla, Richmond Cardinals
As Jorge Padilla hoisted up the MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month trophy for July, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave Richmond once his contract is up at the end of the season. Padilla put pressure on the Cardinals to keep him around by posting a 4-1 record and an ERA of 0.82 over 44 innings last month. He also rolled up 26 strikeouts, increasing his value both to Richmond and to every other team in the league. This season Padilla has compiled a 10-6 mark with a 2.65 ERA in 22 starts.

Rookie of the Month: Kyle Boutte, Ocean City Tourists
Youngster Kyle Boutte emerged as the latest MarVa Conference Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Ocean City deserved the honor, batting .317 with 12 home runs and 23 RBI. Is the month of July a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Boutte enjoy the limelight. This season Boutte is swinging the bat at a .307 rate with 39 hits in 127 at-bats. To date he has hit 12 home runs, scored 30 runs and driven in 29.

League Leaders (as of July 1st, 2017)
Delaware Division:

AVG: Peter Peters (New Castle Colonials) .333*
HR: Alberto Trujillo (Milford Clippers) 41
RBI: Alberto Trujillo (Milford Clippers) 110
SB: Pedro Galavan (Dover Generals) 54

ERA: Jarred Perry (Lewes Braves) 2.24*
W: Anthony Dundee (Georgetown Sixteens) 16
K: Marcos Estrada (Wilmington Iron Pigs) 180
SV: Mike Banks (Newark Millers) 27*

Marva Division:
AVG: Kent Davis (Norfolk Cavaliers) .370
HR: Abraham Thomas (Washington Senators) 40
RBI: Derek Campbell (Norfolk Cavaliers) 111
SB: Roberto Perez (Norfolk Cavaliers) 38

ERA: Miguel Contreras (Norfolk Cavaliers) 1.48
W: Jose Matos (Norfolk Cavaliers) 17
K: Barney Butler (Washington Senators) 151
SV: Dalton Whitaker (Norfolk Cavaliers) 33

The Sixteens and the Generals continue to fight it out, and if I was a betting man I'd put my money on the Generals. Why? Because of the trades the Sixteens have made, I just feel like they got rid of too much for what they got back. The Generals are a young team. The Sixteens are riding high. Shoudl be good. Looks like the injuries finally caught up to the Braves... The Iron Pigs are the team to beat in the Northern Division. I am surprised that the Colonials have fallen so far behind. They need Peters to turn it up a notch and carry them. The Clippers hit the long ball, and if they continue they will give the Pigs a run for their money... Ocean City made some big trades and this month will be the tell if they were worth it. I didn't expect them to be on top, and I don't think the Admirals or the Blue Crabs did either... The Cavaliers had an off month and gained 7 games. Its too early to say its over, but it is very very close... Looks like this season may be void of any late season races. Hopefully that isn't the case.

Ex-Cavaliers Report (guys we moved in this past offseason):

Norfolk Recap

Eventhough it doesn't seem we are that consistent the stats say otherwise. We followed a 16-11 June with a 17-11 July. Not too bad. But if you were to ask me I wouldn't of guess we played that good. Guess finishg off 7-3 does help... We do go into the final 2 months we two big question marks. A) What Jesus Rivera will show up the final two months of the season? Removing from the starting lineup seemed to set a spark under him, but we will see. B) Is Sun Ho's time in the rotation done? We have 3 guys in AAA ready and our scout is telling us to bring them up. Hopefully Ho will gather himself and finish off strong. After an 8-0 start How is 2-4 with an ERA over 4.25 in his last 11 starts. He just isn't the same guy who started the season. A point drop in Control and movement have been crushing... Its never to early to start thinking about next off-season and I have done that already. For one I'd like to get some higher level prospects, and I have some people to move. As for August 1st, here are the people that will most likely be moved in the off-season: Ron Harris, Sun Ho, Pablo Fretias, Joe Gould. doing this should free up some money so I can sign Mauro Candelaria and Kent Davis to extensions. Keeping Kent Davis around is going to be an important task.

Week 18

Current Week: 6-1 (70-32 - GB (+21) )
Next Week: 2 vs Chesapeake Blue Crabs, 4 @ Salisbury Ports
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 81
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 664 (2nd)
Avg: .288 (2nd)
Runs Against: 382 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.26 (1st)
Pen ERA: 2.81 (1st)
Def Eff: .713 (1st)

Team News: On the last day before the trade deadline I looked around and almost pulled off a deal with the Dover Generals. There was a young kid, who I liked, and figured he would fit in with this team. But the Generals were just asking for too much. I had Sun Ho, Joe Gould another reliever who could pitch in the bigs and a #3 pick. Just for this one guy... If I had a 3 game lead and not an 18 game lead, I probably would pulled the trigger. I might regret this one...

Game 106
Norfolk 6, Virginia Beach 2
Joe Parker (9-5) continues to work his way onto my good side. Going 8.2 innings, giving up 9 hits and just 2 runs. The Cav's had 6 different players get a hit and an RBI, with Jose Escamilla the only XB hit with a double, and Roberto Perez the only one scoring more than one run with 2. Perez also stole 2 bases.

Game 107
Ellicott City 1, Norfolk 7
Miguel Contreras (16-2) went 8.2 innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1 run, while striking out 13. The 13 strikeouts is a new Cavaliers record, and ties a MarVa Conference Record. The offense was lead by Kent Davis and Augusto Rodriquez who both had 2 hits. Cody Johnson, had an odd line, going 1-1 with a triple and a SF driving in 4, after PH'ing in the 7th.

Game 108
Ellicott City 1, Norfolk 8
Jose Matos (18-3) went 6.1 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 run, then handed the ball over to Will Rose who went 2.2 innings for the save (2). The offense had 10 hits with 8 coming from the first 3 batters. Kent Davis and Jose Rodriquez each had 3 and Roberto Perez added 2. Perez went deep (22) and drove in 3. Jose Escamilla added 2 RBI's.

Game 109
Ellicott City 6, Norfolk 2
Ron Reillly (7-8) went 5.2 innings, allowing 8 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 6. Elmer Hawkins let the game get out of hand, going 1.1 giving up 4. Roberto Perez had 3 hits and Derek Campbell added 2 for an offense that had 9 total hits. Ed Dukes hit a HR (9).

Game 110
Ellicott City 2, Norfolk 4
Sun Ho (11-4) must of got wind that he has fallen out of my good graces and set-out to prove me wrong, going 7 innings of 4 hit ball, allowing just 1 run. Dalton Whitaker closed the door for the save (34). The offense had 8 hits with Kent Davis and Roberto Perez each getting 2. Derek Cambpell had a double for the only extra-base hit. The defense turned a triple play 5-4-3, first one of them I remember seeing.

Game 111
Chesapeake 4, Norfolk 7
Joe Parker (10-5) won again, as he continued his string of good starts, going 6.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs, striking out 7. Will Rose pitched the 9th for the save (3). The offense had a very odd line, as we scored 7 runs, on 6 hits and 7 walks, and did not strikeout. Kent Davis had 2 hits and 2 RBI. Mauro Candelaria drove in 2. And Jesus Rivera hit a solo-HR (7).

Game 112
Chesapeake 2, Norfolk 9
Miguel Contreras (17-2) went 7 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs while striking out 8. The offense hit the ball all over the place, getting 14 hits. King Brock and Mauro Candelaria each had 3, Jose Escamilla and Roberto Perez each added 2. Perez drove in a game high 3, including a 2-run HR (23). Jose Escamilla also hit a HR (3).

Around the League:
Miguel Ortega of the Seaford Blue Jays, gave the Seaford fans something to cheer about this year, hitting for the cycle. He went 5-6 with 5 RBI's.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Miguel Ortega, Seaford Blue Jays, 14-29 1 HR, 6 RBI
MarVa: Miguel Ruiz, Ocean City Tourists, 15-34 3 HR, 5 RBI

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (139.6)
2) Ocean City Tourists (132.7)
3) Dover Generals (121.7)
4) Richmond Cardinals (116.8)
5) Georgetown Sixteens (113.3)

GM Notes: Looks like the Richmond Cardinals are going try to run us down. They are currently on a 12 game winning streak. It might be too late, but it does go to show us that we can't just give up yet... Pablo Freitas still has 2 weeks before he returns, and then it will be decision time. Place on the active roster or send him down for rehab. I am not sure I am ready to send anyone down off my active roster. A tough decision to be made. Talk about a guy who has fallen from my good graces. I had many opportunites to trade Pablo over the years, but decided that he'd be my cornerstone. Injuries didn't help, but if he was healthy at the deadline he would of been shipped away... I would of thought Ron Reilly would of been pitching better than he has this year. He has gained some movement potential this season, so that at least is a bright spot. What bothers me most about Ron? He is 7-8 posting a 4.54 ERA with a 1.40 WHIP and he feels "Very Good" about his Performance! I am not sure if that his just him being positive or if it says something about his drive... Mauro Candelaria has cooled off the past two months (.274/.263) but I am rooting for him to hit .300 this season. Currently .314. He has been a great player, and has developed into one of the leagues best fielding first baggers.

The Mystery of Javier Janchez

Javier Janchez is just over 20 years old and in the middle of his second year in the DelMarVa Baseball League. He was signed by the Lewes Braves as an international free-agent for just under $1 million. Depending on who you talk to this guy is either a bona fied superstar or just another minor leaguer from the Dominican Republic. After signing he went to the Braves International Complex to get ready for the road to the majors.

In 2016, he started in the International Complex and in August he was finally brought up and sent to Braves Single-A organization, which is in Norfolk. In 33 games there Janchez hit .287 with 0 HR's and 10 RBI. He finished the last week of the season in AA with the Washington Wasps where in 5 games he went 3-19. Not "blow-you-away" type stats that you would expect from a "can't miss" kid. But during his time in Norfolk Antonio Diaz spent time watching this kid.

During the off-season in 2016, during a salary purge he came over to the us, the Cavaliers, in exchange for our #2 starting pitcher Carlos Mateo. Diaz said the trade was worth it and who were we to argue. Saved us 8 million and give us a "can't miss kid" and a #2 pick. Before this season Janchez was named the #77 prospect in the Delmarva Baseball League, something that surprised everyone, but us in Norfolk.

After one so-so season, in the low minors, we felt he was ready for a shot in AAA. His poor season in A last year didn't phase us, we liked the way he looked this spring and sent him to Yokohama, where he was set to bat 3rd and play CF. All he did was play top of the line ball, and putting up solid numbers. In 98 games this year he has hit .310-18-89, stealing 24 bases putting up a .894 OPS and play a solid CF, 2 errors 6 assists.

Why the mystery? Well, everyone agrees this guy has power, but not everyone agrees how good he will be. OSA has him rated very poorly, Antonio Diaz (Favor's Ability) has him rated through the roof.

Lets compare the ratings:
OSA: Contact: 5/8, Power: 9/9, Power: 4/15, Eye: 1/5, Avoid K's 5/12
Diaz: Contact: 8/11, Power: 12/12, Power: 10/18, Eye: 6/9, Avoid K's 11/15

OSA: Speed: 18, Stealing: 14, Baserunning: 14
Diaz: Speed: 20, Stealing: 18, Baserunning: 12

OSA: Range: 16, Error: 16, Arm: 13
Diaz: Range: 17, Error: 15, Arm: 16

Other things about Janchez to note:
Leader Ability: Very High
Loyalty: Normal
Desire to Win: Normal
Greed: Very Low
Intelligence: Normal
Work Ethic: High

As you can see, OSA doesn't seem to think Javier is ready for the show. Where Antonio Diaz sees the 6'1" - 165 lbs Janchez ready. With the news that Jose Rodriquez is going to be out over a month we felt the time was now. I didn't want him up this year, but for maybe a cup of coffee in September, but with Frietas and Rodriquez out his time is now. He will be with us for the next 2 months, and he has been asking for this for the past 3 months, so lets see how it goes...

He will be put into RF and placed in the #3 hole. Hitting behind Roberto Perez and in front of Derek Campbell he should get some good pitches to hit. I know I am curious to see how this will turn out.

Injury News: Jose Rodriquez was hurt attempting to run down a ball, and he will miss 4-5 weeks with a sprained knee. The Cavaliers will bring up Javier Janchez, to take his spot in right and in the order.

Game 115
Norfolk 7, Salisbury 5
Sun Ho (12-4) did enough to get the win, going 7 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks. Dalton Whitaker pitched the 9th for the save (36). The offense was led by two guys with not much power, flexing their muscles, as Jesus Rivera (8) and Augusto Rodriquez (3) both went deep. Rodriquez, King Brock, Derek Campbell and Roberto Perez each added 2 hits.

Game 116
Norfolk 5, Salisbury 1
Jo Parker (11-5) went 8 innings, giving up 1 run on 8 hits. The offense was laed by King Brock, going 2-5 with a HR (10) and 3 RBI. Mauro Candelaria and Roberto Perez each addd 2 hits. Perez stole base #41 and committed error #20 on the season.

Game 118
Norfolk 6, Salisbury 2
Jose Matos (20-3) went 8 strong innings, giving up 6 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 10, to become this seasons first 20 win pitcher. The offense exploded for 5 runs in the first, thanks in part to Roberto Perez (24) and Derek Campbell (26) who both went deep. Perez added 3 hits, Mauro Candelaria added 2 hits, Derek Campbell and Jose Escamilla each had 2 RBI's. Javier Janchez went 1-5 and was thrown out stealing.

Around the League:
  • Howard Johns, the starting 2B for the Chesapeake Blue Crabs fractured his hand and will miss 5-6 weeks. Johns was hitting .273-5-39 on the season.
  • Alberto Trujillo went deep 3 times, finished the day 4-5 6 RBI's, for the Milford Clippers as he continues to have a monster season. .324-46-122
  • Steve Williams of the Annapolis Admirals has now hit in 20 straight. He is a hitting streak machine. He has now had a hit-streak of 20 plus in the last 4 seasons. He holds the record, which he set in 2015 with 43 games.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Peter Peters, New Castle Colonials, 12-22 2 HR's, 6 RBI's
MarVa: Roberto Perez, Norfolk Cavaliers, 14-26 1 HR, 5 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (148.2)
2) Ocean City Tourists (120.9)
3) Dover Generals (120.8)
4) Annapolis Admirals (110.7)
5) Wilmington Iron Pigs (108.3)

GM Notes: This up coming week will be one of our toughest weeks of the season. We play the top team in the Eastern Division for 4 and then head to Richmond to play the red-hot Cardinals for 4. Going to tell us a lot about our team... Janchez is off to an interesting start going 2-9 in 2 games (1 hit in each). With Frietas coming back in a week, I will have a decision to make. My feeling now is send Freitas to AAA for a short rehab stint, but get him back on the roster by Sept 1 for the playoffs. We are a better team with him in the lineup for sure.. Then go from there. Just need to figure out who to send down... Still have 44 games left, and I can't tell you how ready I am for this season to be over. I just want to start the playoffs before any (more) major injuries. Maybe I don't want to rush it, but in the past 6 weeks, I have lost my CF, LF, RF all to the DL. Lucky for me Kent Davis only missed 2 weeks, and King Brock has filled the game at the DH. What a pleasant surprise. He should get a look at the ROY, but I know he went, but a .280+ avg, 10 HR's and 50+ RBI's aren't to shabby... On to our tough week. The first 4 games vs Ocean City should be interesting, our starting rotation doesn't line up too well, as we start things off with our #3 man Ron Reilly. Statement series?? Lets wait and see.

Magic Number: 13

Game 119
Ocean City 3, Norfolk 4
Ron Reilly (9-8) brought his A-game, going 8 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out 5. Dalton Whitaker shut the door with a perfect 9th for the save (37). The offense was lead by Kent Davis, King Brock and Ed Duke each with 2 hits, and Javier Janchez with 2 RBI's.

Game 120
Ocean City 3, Norfolk 8
Sun Ho (12-5) went 3.1 innings, getting roughed up for 7 hits and 6 runs, and the Cav's offense couldn't pick him up. The offense was lead by Mauro Candelaria with 2 hits and Roberto Perez with a HR (25) and 2 RBI. Javier Janchez had his first big-league extra base hit, a double and his first error.

Game 121
Ocean City 4, Norfolk 9
Joe Parker (12-5) continued to win games, going 5 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs, before the bullpen finished the job. The offense was lead by King Brock who went 3-5 with a HR (11) 5 RBI's. Kent Davis also added 3 hits, and Augusto Rodriquez hit a HR (5)

Game 122
Ocean City 3, Norfolk 4 (10 Innings)
Miguel Contreras (ND) went 7 strong innings, but left the game down 2, allowing 3 runs (2 ER) on 7 hits. Jamie King (3-1) went the final 3 innings, as the Cav's fought back for the extra-inning win. The offense was lead by Kent Davis and Roberto Perez who both had 2 hits. Derek Campbell had the big hit in the 8th tying the game with a double, and Perez hit a walk-off HR (26) in the 10th.

Game 123
Norfolk 9, Richmond 10
Jose Matos (ND) went 5 innings, and had some control issues, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits, while walking 5 and striking out 6. The bullpen kept the game close, but Dalton Whitaker fell blew the save (3) and took the loss (1-4) giving up 3 hits and 4 runs, including a walk off 3-run job. The Cav's offense was lead by Javier Janchez, who went 3-5 with a HR, his first big league blast, and 4 RBI. Roberto Perez added 2 hits and 3 RBI, including a HR (27). Mauro Candelaria and Augusto Rodriquez each added 2 hits.

Game 124
Norfolk 8, Richmond 4
Ron Reilly (10-8) went 8.2 innings, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits, then gave the ball to Dalton Whitaker who closed the door in the 9th for the save (38), as the Cav's bounced back from a tough loss, and beat Don Sweetapple once again. The offense was lead by Javier Janchez going 3-4 with 3 RBI's and a HR (2). King Brock (12), Jose Escamilla (4) and Gilberto Ramos (6) all went deep as well.

Game 125
Norfolk 8, Richmond 4
Sun Ho (ND) took the no decision, going 6 innings, allowing only 3 hits, but added 7 walks, gave up 4 runs. Jamie King (4-1) went the final 3 innings allowing just 1 hit for the win. The offense was lead by Roberto Perez who had a perfect 4-4 day with a HR (28) and 2 RBI. Derek Campbell and Julio Romero each had 1 hit and 2 RBI's.

Around the League:
  • Abraham Thomas of the Washington Senators hit 3 long-balls and drove in 6. He is shooting for his 2nd MVP award.
  • Javier Uberuaga of the Annapolis Admirals threw a 2-hit shutout against the struggling Chesapeake Blue Crabs.
  • Murray Pavie of the Seaford Blue Jays ruptured his Achilles tendon a recent game and will miss at least 4 months. He just started to warm up since the trade to the Jays, not the way he wanted to end his rookie season.
  • Steve Williams, the Annapolis Admirals hit machine, hit streak came to an end to 24 games.
  • Salisbury Ports fired their GM Tomas Rivera and their Manager Bill Patterson after. This was Bill's first managerial job, but I doubt it will be his last. Rivera was a the GM for the Sixteens 2 years ago, was fired after high expectations lead to a last place finish.
  • Francisco Reyes of the Ocean City Tourists had a 5-8 day in a 14 inning game, as he continues to press for MVP votes.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Orlando Lozano, Christiana Blue Hens, 12-23 2 HR's, 6 RBI
MarVa: Abraham Thomas, Washington Senators, 14-31 5 HR's, 9 RBI

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (139.0)
2) Ocean City Tourists (120.2)
3) Dover Generals (114.4)
4) Annapolis Admirals (111.1)
5) Wilmington Iron Pigs (105.1)
(no changes in the top 5 this week, first time of the season)

GM Notes: I feel better, beating the Tourists 3 out of 4. Makes me feel like we have playoff hope. I was getting worried about our performances against the better teams. This helps... I really need to figure out a way to get Ho out of the rotation. Antonio Diaz is telling me I have 4 SP's down on the farm ready to come up. I may have to try to fancy maneuvering this up coming week. I'd like to give at least one of them some starts, and possible a playoff roster spot... Pablo Freitas comes back tomorrow. He will be sent down to AAA to get some at-bats before he joins us for the stretch run. Right now he would play LF, moving Derek Campbell to 2B. That would be a pretty tough lineup and it allows me to keep King Brock and Javier Janchez in the lineup... The next weeks as we prepare for September and the playoff roster, we will have some decisions to make. What makes us the best team? That will ultimately drive my final decision.

Week 21

Current Week: 3-3 (94-37 - GB (+23) )
Next Week: 3 vs Washington Senators, 4 @ Annapolis Admirals
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 85 (+4)
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 783 (2nd)
Avg: .290 (2nd)
Runs Against: 465 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.46 (1st)
Pen ERA: 2.86 (1st)
Def Eff: .716 (1st)

Magic Number: 9

Game 126
Norfolk 2, Richmond 5
Joe Parker (12-6) would of had a good game if he could of kept the ball in the stadium, giving up 4 HR's over 7.1 innings. Overall he got touched up for 9 hits and 5 runs. The Cav's were lead by Jesus Rivera, who went 3-4 and Mauro Candelaria who added 2-hits. The only Cav's runs came in the 5th thanks to a 2-run HR by Augusto Rodriquez (6).

Transaction News: Pablo Freitas was activated from the DL and sent down to AAA to get some swings in. After 6 weeks, it made sense for another rehab assignment. Janchez will get some more swings as well. When its time for Pablo to come back, I will have a tough decision to make.

Game 127
Baltimore 2, Norfolk 3
Miguel Contreras (19-2) had another great game, going 8 innings, giving up 4 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 7. Dalton Whitaker pitched the 9th for the save (39). The Cav's offense was lead by Jesus Rivera who had 2 hits and Roberto Perez who hit a solo-HR (29).

Game 128
Baltimore 7, Norfolk 14
Jose Matos (21-3) had a nice outing going 8 innings, striking out 7, giving up 8 hits and 4 runs. Jamie King got roughed up for 3 runs in 1 inning of work. The offense had 12 hits and 10 walks, leaving 10 men on base. Kent Davis lead the way with 3 hits and Augusto Rodriquez who had 2 hits and 6 RBI, including a HR (7). Javier Janchez hit a grand-slam (3) and Derek Campbell also added a HR (27).

Game 129
Baltimore 2, Norfolk 1
Ron Reilly (10-9) had a great game, but the offense couldn't get any support, as he went 8 innings, givin gup 2 runs on 7 hits. Augusto Rodriquez had a 3-3 day, and King Brock and Roberto Perez each added 2 hits.

Game 130
Baltimore 4, Norfolk 8
Sun Ho (13-5) had a pretty good outing, going 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and 4 runs, while walking and striking out 4. He was touched up for 3 HR's. The offense had 13 hits lead by Roberto Perez who had 3 hits, all doubles and 2 RBI. Kent Davis and Augusto Rodriquez each had 2 hits and 2 RBI's, and Jose Escamilla had a perfect 2-2 day.

Game 131
Washington 7, Norfolk 4
Joe Parker (12-7) was touched up for 11 hits, 3 HR's, and gave up 7 runs while striking out 7. The offense was held to 6 hits by 6 different players. Jose Escamilla hit a solo-HR (5) and Javier Janchez and Mauro Candelaria each doubled.

Around the League:
  • Salisbury Ports Owner, Tae-wan Park, made it public that he was not happy with 3-day old Manager Frank Shafer's reaction during a post-game press conference, following the Ports 20th straight loss. After the blow-up the Ports went on to win their next game, and 3 out of 5. Shafer is now 3-5 as the Ports Manager.
  • Miguel Ruiz suffered a set-back that will keep the Ocean City Tourists LF'er off the field for 1-2 more weeks. On the season Ruiz is hitting .329-35-108.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Bruce Walker, Milford Clippers, 12-24 2 HR's 5 RBI, 12 Runs
MarVa: Bruce Robertson, Richmond Cardinals, 13-26 4 HR's, 8 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (130.2)
2) Annapolis Admirals (117.2)
3) Wilmington Iron Pigs (108.8)
4) Ocean City Tourists (107.3)
5) Dover Generals (105.2)

GM Notes: We followed off a strong week, with an up and down week, seems to be our story heading into the last month... My toughest decision I will have will be what to do with my pitching. Our AAA team is fighting for a play-off spot and their 2nd championship, so I don't want to strip them of all their players. But it would be nice to get Griffith, Otero and Ramirez a start or two before the seasons end... With Joe Parker giving up HR's and Sun Ho posting a 5+ ERA over the past 3 months, I do have a glaring weakness in the rotation. With 3 days to go before Sept 1, I may need to bring up someone to qualify them for the post season... I will need to make room for Pablo Freitas on the roster and get him in the lineup. We are just a better team with him in the lineup...

Abraham Thomas of the Senators hit a HR in the first game of our series, so I felt inclined to see how well he has hit us this year. And its not pretty. .327-9-19 in 13 games!! We have struck him out 15 times at least.

August 2017 in Review

Players of the Month:
Delaware Conference:

Batter of the Month: Bruce Walker, Milford Clippers
Bruce Walker received the Delaware Conference Batter of the Month trophy earlier today for his efforts at the plate this last month. "He might be getting older," Milford's manager told reporters, "But he's been around long enough to know what it takes to put a stretch such as this together... and he doesn't keep that to himself. He's always talking to the younger guys in the clubhouse helping 'em any way they'll let him. Bruce's value to our team goes farther than the numbers he puts up on the field." To win the honor Walker put up a .403 batting average, 6 home runs, 20 RBIs and scored 35 times in August. For the season Walker has hit .345 with 15 home runs and 68 RBIs. He has played in 135 games and scored 99 times.

Pitcher of the Month: Marcos Estrada, Wilmington Iron Pigs
Marcos Estrada's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-0 in August, the 29-year-old Wilmington hurler has been named Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month. He fanned 50 in 37 innings, logged an ERA of 1.70 and allowed opponents to hit .234 against him. Thus far this season, Estrada has worked 183 innings with 230 strikeouts en route to a 16-4 record and a 2.56 ERA.

Rookie of the Month: Claude Bond, Dover Generals
A veritable toddler to the Delaware Conference, Claude Bond just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for August. Over the past month the 22-year-old third baseman for Dover hit .360 with 36 hits, 1 home run and 10 runs batted in. He also logged 16 walks and compiled a .444 on-base percentage. This season Bond is batting .290 with 3 home runs. His totals include 35 RBIs and 34 runs scored.

MarVa Conference:

Batter of the Month: Roberto Perez, Norfolk Cavaliers
Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 27-year-old Roberto Pérez put together a solid offensive month for Norfolk and was crowned August's top batter in the MarVa Conference. He batted .398 with 9 home runs, 26 RBIs and 29 runs scored. For the season Pérez is currently batting .335 with 30 home runs and 105 RBIs. In 129 games he has reached base at a .436 rate and scored 115 runs to date.

Pitcher of the Month: Jose Cobo, Washington Senators
José Cobo of the Washington Senators is the MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month.
In August he sparkled and shined on the mound with 5 wins and no losses in 6 starts. Cobo checked opposing batters on 38 base hits and a .220 batting average. He rang up 25 strikeouts in 46.1 innings of work, surrendered 9 walks and fashioned a 1.94 ERA. Checking out his stats for the year, Cobo has racked up 11 wins and 9 losses in 27 starts, 4.63 ERA and struck out 119 batters in 157.1 innings.

Rookie of the Month: Doug Dook, Ellicott City Express
Doug Dook's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Ellicott City third baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month. In August he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award. During the month he hit .350 with 5 doubles, no triples and 6 home runs. Dook also scored 20 times and drove in 24 runs. This season in 134 games, Dook has hit at a .246 clip with 122 hits, 19 home runs, 75 RBIs and 69 runs scored.

The Generals and Sixteens look like they are going to take this one down to the wire. I still think the Generals will pull this one out, but the Sixteens are out to prove me wrong... The Iron Pigs are pulling away, as the Clippers couldn't keep up with them last month. The Colonials are 6 games out, but I just don't think they have the firepower this year to catch the Pigs... Annapolis gained 3 games last month, but the Tourists are still the team to beat. If they don't hold on, you can go back to the trade of their starting catcher Villalobos as to the reason why... We are just maintaining as the division is ours, as long as we can win 8 games. The goal is to get through September injury free.

I think the expansion teams did alright in their first year, but the blow up of the Ports I do find a little shocking. They have some work ahead of them, that is for sure.

Georgetown Sixteens +1 , Magic Number 27
Wilmington Iron Pigs +6, Magic Number 22

Norfolk Recap

I wouldn't have guessed, because it sure didn't feel like, then again we did put together an 10 game win streak, but we finished the month with a 21-8 record, making this our second best month of the season. I just don't think we are consistent enough to make it actually feel like we are winning that many games. Maybe I only remember the losses, I don't know... Our pitching staff has been #1 in most of the pitching categories all season. And they seem to be the strongest part of this team, but I also think they are our biggest concern. Once you get by our #1 and #2 starters we are questionable, and once you get past our top 3 guys in the pen, it becomes questionable. I will need to get some faith in our staff, heading into the playoffs... If the season ended today, we would have 3 rookies in our starting play-off lineup. Ed Dukes, King Brock and Javier Janchez. Dukes has had a questionable season, probably rushed up to the majors, but I think he will be fine with time. He has had some good development this season. in 108 games he is hitting .229-10-30, and he has a fielding PCT of .992. Can't really complain there...

Week 22

Current Week: 4-3 (98-40 - GB (+22) )
Next Week: 4 vs Virginia Beach, 2 @ Ellicott City Express
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 85
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 817 (2nd)
Avg: .290 (2nd)
Runs Against: 490 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.42 (1st)
Pen ERA: 2.92 (1st)
Def Eff: .714 (1st)

Magic Number: 3

Transaction News: Pablo Freitas was hitting .375 at AAA, so I made the move and brought him up. I sent down Utility man Cody Johnson, who was hitting .187 (oddly enough he finished last year hitting .187). To make room in the lineup, I moved Derek Campbell to 2B and put Pablo in LF. Campbell isn't a great 2B, but it allows me to get more bats in the lineup and keep Janchez in the lineup... side note: Pablo Freitas has been downgraded to a "Fragile" injury rating.

Game 132
Washington 5, Norfolk 4 (10 Innings)
Miguel Contreras (ND) went 6.2 innings giving up 2 hits, no runs and striking out 11, before giving the ball over to the pen. Dalton Whitaker strugged, giving up 2 hits, 2 walks and 3 runs, as he blew the save (4) and Derek Carter (1-1) took the loss in the 10th giving up 1 hit, 2 walks and 1 run. The offense was led by Kent Davis and Roberto Perez both with 2 hits. Davis added 2-runs, including a solo-HR (3). Pablo Freitas was 0-3 with 2 walks in his return.

Game 133
Washington 4, Norfolk 1
Jose Matos (21-4) took the loss, but pitched a solid game, going 7 innigns, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits, while striking out 8. Jamie King gave up 2 runs in 2/3 of relief. The offense had 6 hits, with King Brock leading the way with a 2-2 day. The Cav's didn't strike-out on the day.

Game 134
Washington 4, Norfolk 5 (14 Innings)
Ron Reilly (ND) left in the 6th with an undisclosed injury, going 5 innings, allowing 8 hits and 4 runs. The pen held the Senators scoreless over the final 9 with Ivan Pineda collecting the win (1-0) in the 14th. The offense was lead by Ed Duke who had a 4-6 day with 3 RBI, including a HR (10) and the winning RBI. Kent Davis and Derek Campbell each aded 3 hits and Javier Janchez and Mauro Candelaria added 2.

Game 135
Norfolk 11, Annapolis 3
Sun Ho (14-5) won another game holding the Admirals to 2 runs in 6.2 innings, on 6 hits. Five guys on the offense had 2-hit days: Kent Davis, Roberto Perez, Pablo Freitas, Mauro Candelaria and Ed Duke. Campbell, Candelaria and Perez each drove in 2. Perez hit is 30th HR of the season, collecting another 30/30.

Transactions News: My first September call-up was Cody Johnson. He should be on this roster even if he can't hit. He doesn't get enough PT, but its nice to have a guy that plays 5 posistions... I checked in on my pitching in the minor and 2 of the 3 guys are injuried. Adrian Otero is out a week, and Vaughn Griffith has been shut-down for the rest of the season. So no other call-ups as of now. Ron Reilly is day-to-day for a 5 days, so I am going to bring up Arturo Ramirez to take his spot in the rotation, then he will go back down to help with the playoffs. Adrian Otero, Joe Gould, Justin Freisi and Yazi Ine could be brought up later this month.

Game 136
Norfolk 5, Annapolis 1
Joe Parker (13-7) keeps showing us that he wants a rotation spot in the post-season, as he went 8 strong innings, allowing 8 hits and 1 run. The top 4 hitters each had 2 hits: Kent Davis, Roberto Perez, Javier Janchez and Derek Campbell. Roberto Perez scored 2 times and drove in 2, including a HR (31).

Game 137
Norfolk 4, Annapolis 3
Miguel Contreras (20-2) won his 20th going 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs while striking out 8. Six pitchers relieved Miguel with Dalton Whitaker picking up his 40th save. The offense was lead by Kent Davis with 3 hits and Derek Campbell with 2 hits and 3 RBI's, including a HR (28).

Game 138
Norfolk 4, Annapolis 5 (10 innings)
Jose Matos (ND) went 8 innings, giving up 6 hits and 4 runs (2 ER), but left in a tie game. Dalton Whitaker (1-5) took the loss, giving up a walk-off HR in the 10th. The offense had 11 hits, with Julio Romero, King Brock and Augusto Rodriquez each collecting 2. Jesus Rivera playing 3rd struggled in the field commiting 3 errors.

Around the League:
  • Joaquin Torres, Lewes Braves, suffered a concussion and will miss about 6 months. Torres had been the starting 2B for the Braves. .318-5-39
  • Don Perkins, Wilmington Iron Pigs, and Gilberto Carrabello, Dover Generals will have to sit out 5-games for brawling after Carrabelloe hit Perkins in a game earlier this week.
  • David Armstrong, Ellicott city Express, and Ocean City Tourists, Steve McClellan, were ejected 6-games after McClellan threw too man pitches in Armstrong's direction.
  • Rafael Martinez the Annapolis Admirals CF'er will miss 5 weeks with a partially torn labrum. He will be missed as the Admirals try to catch the Tourists. .293-11-65

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Jeff Lewis, Newark Millers, 12-22 1 HR, 4 RBIs
MarVa: Garrot Grant, Richmond Cardinals, 15-28 4 HR's, 9 RBIs

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (126.8)
2) Ocean City Tourists (122.5)
3) Dover Generals (110.0)
4) Wilmington Iron Pigs (108.7)
5) Georgetown Sixteens (108.7)

Divisional Races (teams w/in 10 games shown):
Southern Division:

Dover Generals M#24
Georgetown Sixteens -1

Northern Division:
Wilmington Iron Pigs M#19
New Castle Colonials -6
Milford Clippers -8

Eastern Division:
Ocean City Tourists M#19
Annapolis Admirals -6

Western Division:
Norfolk Cavaliers M#6

GM Notes: Jose Rodriquez will be back in 4 days, so that will give us a little more depth. I will have to figure out what to do with the lineup at this point. Move Janchez? Freitas? What gives us the best chance to win? ... Arturo Ramirez will get the start on Tuesday, then he will be shipped back down to AAA and Reilly will get back into the rotation. Should be an interesting debut, but you couldn't ask for it to be worse a worse team (Virginia Beach). He has a good shot to get some confidence... We just need to stay healthy for 24 more days... With Matos and Contreras we have our first to 20 game winners in Norfolk. A great accomplishment. The fans have backed us of late, which has been nice... I am curious if Freitas "wrecked" status will effect his trade value this off-season. I would like to sign Joe Parker to an extension, not sure I will be able to based on his salary demands and the timing. We have no money available at this time... I can't say this enough, but I am ready for the season to end, I am afraid of injuries...

Game 139
Virginia Beach 0, Norfolk 2
Arturo Ramirez (1-0) didn't disappoint anyone in his first big league start, as he threw a complete game 9-inning 2-hit shutout. Arturo struck out 4 and threw 99 pitches. The offense was lead by Kent Davis and his 3 hits, as well as Mauro Candelaria who added 2. King Brock added a 2-run HR (13).

Transactions News: After the game we sent Arturo Ramirez down to AAA to help with the Championship run. Ron Reilly is back into the rotation. It was a tough call, but I beleive its the right thing to do. Arturo should get one more start with us before seasons end.

Game 140
Virginia Beach 5, Norfolk 3
Sun Ho (14-6) took the loss, getting hit hard over 6.2 innings, giving up 5 runs on 6 hits, 2 HR's. Will Rose pitched a perfect 2.1 but the offense couldn't get enough going. The Cav's had 9 hits, 3 of which came from King Brock, which included the only hit for extra bases a double. Kent Davis stole base #40.

Game 141
Virginia Beach 12, Norfolk 10 (14 Innings)
Joe Parker (ND) got hit hard over 4.2 innings, allowing 7 hits and 8 runs. Joe King (4-2) too the loss going 3 innings of relief and giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks. The offense had 18 hits including 3 by Roberto Perez and Mauro Candelaria and 2 by Kent Davis, Javier Janchez, Derek Campbell, Pablo Freitas and Jesus Rivera. King (14) and Jesus Rivera (9) both went deep. Roberto Perez stole base #50.

Transactions News: Jose Rodriquez came off the DL. I put him in the lineup to replace Javier Janchez. Janchez will remain up with us and be our out-field sub for everyone. I have to figure out how to get Jesus Rivera some at-bats over the next couple of weeks. Assuming he will be our playoff 2nd baseman. Not sure yet though.

Game 142
Virginia Beach 0, Norfolk 7
Miguel Contreras (21-2) continued his magical season, going 8.2 innings allowing just 5 hits and striking out 10. The offense was lead by Jesus Rivera, who went 4-4 with 4 runs and 3 RBI, including 2 HR's (11) and a double. Roberto Perez, Mauro Candelarai, Gilberto Ramos and Augusto Rodriquez each added 2 hits.

News: The Cavaliers officially clinched a playoff spot with their win today.

Game 143
Norfolk 4, Ellicott City 7
Jose Matos (21-5) got hit hard today, not making it past the 4th inning, going 3.2 giving up 7 hits and 6 runs. Ron Harris and Will Rose tried to get the came in check, giving up 1 run on 1 hit over the last 4.1 innings. The offense was lead by Mauro Candelaria who had 2 hits.

Game 144
Norfolk 10, Ellicott City 4
Ron Reilly (11-9) went 8.2 innings allowing 9 hits and 4 runs, but was ejected before he could finish the game (he plunked a guy after he gave up a 2-run HR, his second HBP of the game). The offense broke out for 12 hits, including 2-hit days by Augusto Rodriquez, Pablo Freitas, Derek Campbell and Roberto Perez. Ed Duke added a 3-run HR (11) and Augusto Rodriquez hit a solo-shot (8).

Transactions News: Ron Reilly has been suspended for 2 games after his part in a brawl in Todays game. He won't miss a start... I also sent Javier Janchez down to AAA to help with the push for the Championship, and to get more at-bats.

Around the League:
  • Gabriel Gonzalez of the Ellicott city Express will miss 2 more weeks as he is not healing as fast as they would of hoped from his 'dead arm'. In 26 starts Gonzalez is 7-5 with a 3.41.
  • The Annapolis Admirals have their second baseman for the next 4 years, as they signed Jose Colon to a 4-yr $46 million extension.
  • Record steal man Pedro Galvan, of the Dover Generals, has an annoying oblique strain and will miss at least a week.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Andy Kohl, Dover Generals, 10-22 3 HR's, 9 RBI's
MarVa: John Bowles, Baltimore Barons, 12-21 3 HR's, 10 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (129.3)
2) Dover Generals (127.0)
3) Ocean City Tourists (118.5)
4) Wilmington Iron Pigs (116.5)
5) Annapolis Admirals (110.3)

Divisional Races (teams w/in 10 games shown):
Southern Division:
Dover Generals M#16
Georgetown Sixteens -3

Northern Division:
Wilmington Iron Pigs M#10
New Castle Colonials -9
Milford Clippers -9

Eastern Division:
Ocean City Tourists M#14
Annapolis Admirals -5

Western Division:
Norfolk Cavaliers *clinched*

GM Notes: Arturo Ramirez impressed with his start against the Surf Dawgs. He faced the ace of the Dawgs and he pitched very impressively. He should have himself a spot in our rotation next year... Miguel Contreras keeps winning, and is now tied with the league lead in wins. On his way to a 3rd straight triple crown. Sad to say the only reason he has caught the leader in wins is Jose Matos is struggling. Hopefully its just late season jitters, and not a sign of bigger issues... We seem to be very up and down, the funny thing is we are usually up against the other teams better pitchers, hopefully that bodes well for the playoffs... 18 more games. Need to get the rotation rested, get the lineup back in gear and we should be good. Jose Rodriquez went 1-10 since his return, hopefully he can get his swing back before the playoffs begin. I am not as confident with this team, as I was with last years team...

GM Notes: Not much to say right now, we have 2 weeks left and I just want to stay healthy and get into the playoffs at full strength.. Contreras and Matos will each get two more starts, then be ready for games 1 and 2 in the playoffs... I have to figure out what I want to do with the defense, put better bats in an a lesser D or play with a better D and lesser O. Guess I will cross that bridge when I get there... This off-season will be another busy one, I need to figure out what I am going to do with guys coming up on aribitration. Right now I am leaning towards trading Jose Rodriquez and Pablo Freitas and trying to sign Kent Davis and Derek Campbell to longer term deals. But do I have the minor's to fill those spots? Will I have money to sign anyone? Going to be an intersting off-season, but for now the focus is staying healthy... I will also need to get some minor leaguer coaches signed, I look to be losing 3.

Minor League Teams:
The Yokohama Baystars take on the Barcelona Dragons in the first round playoff series.

Jamie Parker (14-9) went 6.1 innings, allowing 9 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 5. The offense was quiet getting 8 hits, with Kent Davis collecting 3. Derek Campbell had a doulbe for the Cav's only extra base hit.

Game 157
Norfolk 6, Ocean City 2
Miguel Contreras (ND) went 6.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs, but the offense couldn't break the tie till late. Will Rose went 2/3 to pick up the win (8-4). Roberto Perez, Jose Rodriquez, Mauro Candelaria and King Brock all had 2 hits to lead the offense. Derek Campbell added a PH Solo-HR (32). Kent Davis was pulled from the game when he hurt himself running the bases. Hopefully its nothing serious.

Around the League:
  • Kevin Norris, Milford Clippers, will miss 5 weeks due to plantar fascitis. Kevin put together a solid season with the Clippers going .304-5-34
  • The Dover Generals were dealt a huge blow to their playoff run as they will be without their Ace Jerry Copeland for the rest of the season. Due to elbow tendinitis, Copeland will not be allowed to throw for 2-3 months. He was 16-9 3.17 on the season.
  • Andy Nelson of the New Castle Colonials will miss 8 months due to a torn labrum. He was 11-9 5.27 in 32 starts on the season.

Record Watch:

ERA (1.921): Miguel Contreras 1.610

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Andy Kohl, Dover Generals, 10-23 4 HR's, 8 RBI's.
MarVa: John Bowles, Baltimore Barons, 11-26 1 HR, 10 RBI's

3) Dover Generals (116.1)
4) Annapolis Admirals (113.6)
5) Georgetown Sixteens (110.8)

Divisional Races (teams w/in 10 games shown):
Southern Division:
Dover Generals M#4
Georgetown Sixteens -2
They finish this season playing each other in a 4 game series in Georgetown.

Northern Division:
Wilmington Iron Pigs *clinched*

Eastern Division:
Ocean City Tourists M#5
Annapolis Admirals -1

Western Division:
Norfolk Cavaliers *clinched*

GM Notes: If Jose Matos wins tomorrow, then Miguel Contreras won't win the triple crown of pitching, if he loses or gets a ND they will tie for the league lead in wins and he will take it home for the 3rd straight year. Should be interesting. I am not sure if Miguel will pitch again before the playoffs.... Arturo Ramirez will start game 1 in the AAA Championship Series then will be called up to start one game for the Cav's, allowing our staff to get set for the playoffs.... I know he won't get much respect or votes, but King Brock deserves some notirity for his solid rookie season. Currently he is hitting .283-15-71. If he played up here all season he might of got 100 RBIs... Here is to a healthy final week. Five more games...

Minor League Teams:
The Yokohama Baystars swept the Barcelona Dragons in round 1 and will take on the Havana Nationals in the title game.

A - Jacksonville resigned pitching coach Julio Borges
AA - New Orleans will be looking for a new Manager and a Pitching Coach. We did not renew the contracts of Jose Kennedy and Rich Mathews.

Game 158
Norfolk 4, Ocean City 2 (10 Innings)
Jose Matos (ND) went 6.2 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 run. Dalton Whitaker (2-5) got the win going the final 2 innings, striking out 5. Jesus Rivera tied the game in the 8th with a 2-run HR (12) and Jose Rodriquez won the game with a 2-run HR (22) in the top of the 10th. The Cav's only had 5 hits, but they got the two big ones they needed.

Game 159
Richmond 7, Norfolk 4
Arturo Ramirez (ND) went 5.2 innings, battling Don Sweetapple, but had to leave after feeling pain in his forearm. Ramirez gave up 3 hits and 3 runs (1 ER) and struck out 5. Elmer Hawkins took the loss (3-1) givin gup 2 runs on 1 hit and a walk and not recording an out. The offense had 11 hits, and were lead by Augusto Rodriquez who went 3-4 with a HR (11). Mauro Candelaria and Julio Romero each added 2 hits and Derek Campbell went deep (33).

Injury News: Arturo Ramirez has been shut down for the rest of the season with a strained forearm. But he did show us he is ready for a rotation spot next season.

Game 160
Richmond 3, Norfolk 4
Ron Reilly (ND) went 5 innings, before leaving with an injury, giving up 2 hits and 1 run. Derek Carter gave up 2 runs in relief, the most he has given up all season, and Will Rose (9-4) got the win pitching the final 2 innings. The offense had 9 hits, lead by Derek Campbell's 3-5 day with 2 RBI's and the lone extra-base hit a double. Mauro Candelaria and Kent Davis each added 2 hits.

Game 161
Richmond 1, Norfolk 2
Sun Ho (ND) pitched well, going 6.1 innings, giving up 3 hits and 1 run. He did walk 5 and struck out 4. Dalton Whitaker was credited with the win (3-5) pitching 1 inning of shut-out relief. The offense was only able to get 3 hits, but Roberto Perez got the one that counted most, a 2-run walk off HR (34) in the bottom of the 9th.

Game 162
Richmond 2, Norfolk 1
Jamie Parker (14-10) was the tough luck loser, going 8 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 5. The offense just couldn't get anything going collecting 6 hits, by 6 different players. A Kent Davis double was the only extra-base hit.

Around the League:
  • Kent Davis takes home the batting title hitting .364 in the MarVa Conference
  • Bruce Walker takes home the batting title in the Delaware Conference hitting .350
  • Miguel Contreras earns the pitching triple crown.
  • Baltimore Barons rightfielder, Paul Coker, will be out 9-10 months with a torn labrum.

5) Georgetown Sixteens (110.8)

Divisional Races (teams w/in 10 games shown):
Southern Division:
Dover Generals *clinched*

Northern Division:

Eastern Division:
Annapolis Admirals *clinched*
Ocean City lost 4 out of their last 5, and Annapolis snuck in to win the division by a game.

Western Division:
Norfolk Cavaliers *clinched*

GM Notes: Our offense hit a lul this final week, hopefully that isn't a sign of thigns to come for the playoffs... Our rotation is set with Miguel and Jose going 1 and 2. Not sure who #3 is going to be, but if Joe Parker is rested it might be him. Parker, then Ho... Reilly will be shifted to the bullpen (or left off the roster, not sure yet)... I have to say I am surprised how this season finished, I never expected us to be this good. I will have a little more to say during the playoff preview, but now I am just ready to get things going!

Minor League Teams:
The Yokohama Baystars are down 2 games to 1 in the best of 7 series to the Havana Nationals. They are now without 2 of their top pitchers Vaughn Griffith and Arturo Ramirez.

A - Jacksonville resigned pitching coach Julio Borges
AA - New Orleans signed Bill Patterson to be their new Manager and Spencer Grady as their new PC. Bill had only one job in his managerial career, and that was with the Manager of the Salisbury Ports. He was fired after a 38-84 start. Spencer has a been the pitching coach of the A team from New Orelans for the past 5 seasons.
AAA - Yokohama signed hitting coach Jaime Perez whose contract was set to expire at the end of the season.
Our coaches are set for 2018 throughout the system.

Payoff Preview

Playoff Roster:
After deliberating I decided to keep the roster as is. What does this mean? Well I had one player that was eligible for the roster that isn't on the roster, that player Javier Janchez. So to make room for him I would have to to sit Gilberto Ramos or Ron Reilly. I was close to moving both of them off, then realized I shouldn't. Reilly gives me a long reliever, even if he isn't going to be available for the first 2 games (I shouldn't need him with Matos and Contreras). Ramos gives me a utility man who plays 6 position, 5 of them well. Plus Ramos has been with me through the previous 2 Championship runs hitting .278-1-6 in 17 games. But he was a spark last year...

The rotation is set:
Miguel Contreras on the mound for game 1. Miguel went 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA in 3 starts against the Admirals. Jose Matos will follow Miguel. Jose went 2-0 in 3 starts with a 2.45 ERA this season vs the Admirals.

The rest is up in the air. Joe Parker is in the rotation, but I am not sure if he is going game 3 or 4. If he can I'd like him to go game 3 if not game 4 is his. He went 2-0 1.89 in 3 games, 2 starts vs. Admirals.

Sun Ho (2-2 7.45 ERA in 4 starts) and Ron Reilly (0-2 4.81 4 games 2 starts) didn't fair to well against the Admirals this year, but I think i am going to lean towards Ho. Only because Reilly isn't healthy, but we will see that could change come game time, that 7.45 is pretty daunting... Ho has never pitched in the playoffs, Reilly pitched in 2 games last season (vs Us) and went 0-2 6.08. Maybe that will help sway my decision...

The bullpen is tight, we have Will Rose who is pitching really well, Dalton Whitaker, closing the door. Dalton actually had a better SV% this season than he did last, despite getting hit harder. Dalton did end up with over 100 K's for the 4th straight season. Derek Carter and Ivan Pineda each posted sub 2.00 ERA's. Carter a rookie pretty much flew under the radar all season.

The offense:
The lineup is pretty much set as well. The only thing I need to figure out is do I go with Defense and start Jesus Rivera and sit King Brock or do I go with Offense and sit Jesus Rivera and have Derek Campbell play second. I am leaning towards offense right now.

Concerns on the offense... Jesus Rivera hit .417 in four games during the 2014 playoffs, but only .118 last season going 2-17. The other concern is Augusto Rodriquez who played in all 10 games last playoffs, but only went 3-40 .075. I will have to keep an eye on him this year, he hit .301 on the season so I am hoping that is a good sign. He is n the game for his D (5 Errors this season, +11.0 ZR). Campbell has a -2.7 ZR at second where Rivera comes in at +2.6. Not ideal, but leaning towards offense right now...

The lineup will look like this:
Kent Davis - CF
Roberto Pererz - 3B
Jose Rodriquez - RF
Derek Campbell - 2B
Pablo Freitas - LF
Mauro Candelaria - 1B
King Brock - DH
Ed Duke - C
Augusto Rodriquez - SS

Ed Duke and Julio Romero will platoon, with Romero starting against lefties and possible getting some AB's versus righties. Duke is a better defender, so I will lean towards him... The other platoon will be King Brock and Jesus Rivera against lefties. Brock will sit, and Rivera will play second with Campbell moving to RF and Jose Rodriquez DH'ing...

I will have to see how this lineup works out. I'd hate to sit Jose Rodriquez or Pablo Freitas, but they may end up being odd-men out if I learn towards D. Pablo is a 2x gold glove winner. I will have to look deeper at Jose and King to see who should bat.

Some stats to keep in mind before I finalize my roster:
Jose Rodriquez hit .247-2-11 in Sept and is a career .247-5-17 hitter in the playoffs. In last years playoffs he hit .231-3-11. Jose hit .396-4-16 vs Annapolis this season.

Pablo Freitas hit .274-2-15 in Sept and is a career .250-0-3 hitter in the playoffs. He was injured in 2014, and missed most of last years, only playing in 4 games. Freitas hit .292-1-1 vs Annapolis this season.

King Brock hit .299-3-9 in September and has never appeared in the playoffs. He hit .277-0-5 vs Annapolis this season.

Jesus Rivera hit .293-4-10 in September, we talked about his playoff woes earlier. He hit .200-1-4 vs Annapolis.

I think the lineup I have listed gives us the best chance to win, but I won't be afraid to change it up. Pitching and Defense win games, but we have to be able to score runs as well.

We head off against the Annapolis Admirals who we had very good success against this season, 10-6... And we go in at pretty much full-health and they are beat up. September wasn't a good month for them as they lost starting 3B Jorge Guiterrez (.281-19-89), CF Rafael Martinez (.293-11-65), catcher Richard Taylor (.267-21-61) and Ace Javier Uberuaga (11-14 4.34). This should mean good things for Norfolk, but that is why we are going to play the series. Paper and reality don't always match up.

Prediction: Norfolk in 5.

The Other Conference

Over in the Delaware Conference the Dover Generals will take on the Wilmington Iron Pigs. The Iron Pigs return to the playoffs after missing out last year, and will take on the Generals who won their division in 2014 and 2016. This year the Generals warmed up and ran down the disappointing Georgetown Sixteens... Going into this series both teams are playing well and both teams are missing a starter. Dover though is missing their ace, Jerry Copeland (16-9 3.17), who was shut down a week ago.

Both these teams are pretty evenly matched, but I am going to go with the Iron Pigs. With the loss of Copeland the pitching will favor Wilmington, plus I have a hard time betting against any team that has a pitcher like Marcos Estrada on their roster.

My prediction: Wilmington in 6

Game 1 Conference Playoffs

Game 1 of the Conference Championships
Pregame Roster Update: Moments before we had to submit our final playoff roster, we got some bad news, Ron Reilly had suffered a set-back from his recovery of his stiff neck. Upon hearing this news I decided to remove Rielly from the playoff roster and add Javier Janchez. I thought about bringing up another pitcher, giving us 12, but in the end I opted with a fielder amd a bat. Hopefully this won't backfire on me, but it does mean that Parker will get the start in game 3 and Ho in game 4.

Jimmy Carr a lefty, gets the ball for the Annapolis Admirals. Carr was 15-7 5.09 on the season and 1-0 1.54 against the Cav's. He will be up against our ace Miguel Contreras, who was 23-5 1.61 on the season and 3-0 2.05 against Annapolis.

Line Up: Facing a lefty means that King Brock and Ed Duke will be on the bench with Julio Romero doing the catching and Jesus Rivera in at second. We were 17-7 this season against lefties, so I am feeling good.

Inning 1: Prob Winning NFK: 53.92%
Top: 2-ground outs and a strike out get the Cav's off right.
Bottom: Kent Davis singles to left center. Roberto Perez follows with a single down the left-field line. Mauro Candelaria grounds into the 3-6 FC moving Davis to third. Derek Campbell hits a rocket to short, forcing Candelaria out at 2nd, but beats the throw. Davis scores. Pablo Freitas flies out to deep left.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 1

Inning 2:
Top: A ground out is followed by a Steve Williams double to left-center. Derek Campbell (RF) drops an easy fly ball, Williams goes to third, Jose Colon is safe at first. Contreras concentrates stikes out the next batter, then the inning ends with a ground out to short. 2 are left on.
Bottom: Julio Romero walks. Jose Rodriquez walks. Jesus Rivera squares to bunt, bunts too hard rigth back to the mound. Romero is forced at 3rd. Rodriquez is on second, Rivera to first. Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to third, Jose moves to third, Rivera to second. Kent Davis flies out to left, 2 men left on.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 1

Inning 3:
Top: After a fly out to left, Roberto Chavez, the leadoff man, triples to left-center. Contreras strikes out David Glenn and then gets Matsuura to flie out to center.
Bottom: Roberto Perez grounds out to short, Mauro Candelaria flies out to right. Derek Campbell goes down looking.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 1

Inning 4:
Top: Dave Hughes singles to lead things off. Steve Williams who double earlier pops out to short. Jose Colon hits a laser back at Contreras who catches it and tosses to first for the double play.
Bottom: Pablo Freitas strikes out swinging. Julio Romero grounds to short. Jose Rodriquez goes down swining.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 1

Inning 5:
Top: A ground out to short, is followed by a ground out to short, and that is followed by a ground out to second.
Bottom: Jesus Rivera gives us some insurance with a 1-2 leadoff 380 foot blast. Augusto Rodriquez pops out to second. Kent Davis walks. Roberto Perez singles in front of the LF'er. To load the bases. Mauro Candelaria grounds into the 1-6-3 inning ending DP.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 2

Inning 6:
Top: Chavez grounds out to first. Augusto Rodriquez makes an incredible play, but is unable to throw Dave Glenn out. Kiyonobu Matsuura singles to left, moving Glenn to second. Dave Hughes flies out to center. Steve Williams flies out to deep center.
Bottom: Derek Campbell flies out to right. Pablo Frietas grounds out to short. Julio Romero grounds out to the pitcher.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 2

Inning 7:
Top: Colon pops out to short. Giles strikes out swinging. Clyde Berry doubles to left... Contreras is at 90 pitches, I start to warm up Will Rose and Ivan Pineda, a lefty and righty... Joe Payne grounds out to third.
Bottom: Jose Rodriquez pops out to second. Jesus Rivera flies out to deep left-center. Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to short.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 2

Inning 8:
Top: Leadoff man Roberto Chavez hits a laser into to left for a single. Glenn flies out to deep right. Matsuura goes down swinging... with back to back lefties up for Annapolis, Will Rose is brought into the game... Dave Hughes grounds out 3-1.
Bottom: Kent Davis starts the 8th off with a single to left... Ed Yoder a righty comes in to replace Jimmy Carr... A diving play by the second baseman is wasted as Roberto Perez hustles down the line for the infield single. Mauro Candelaria doubles down the left field line, scoring Davis, Perez moves over to third. Derek Campbell strikes out. Pablo Freitas is intionally walked to load the bases... King Brock comes in to hit for Julio Romero... Brock singles up the middle scoring Perez. Jose Rodriquez flies out to deep center. Candelaria scores, Freitas moves over to third. Jesus Rivera grounds out 6-4. Ending the inning.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 5

Inning 9:
Top: Ed Duke replaces King Brock in the lineup and will be the catcher... Williams flies out to left. Colon gounds out to short. Bill Giles strikes out to end the game...
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 5
Norfolk leads the series 1-0

W: Miguel Contereras (1-0)
L: Jimmy Carr (0-1)
S: Will Rose (1)
HR: Jesus Rivera (1)
Player of the Game: Miguel Contreras
Attendance: 43650

Game Notes: This was the second career playoff start for Miguel Contreras. He pitched an 8-inning ND against the Cavaliers in 2014... That was Jesus Rivera's first playoff HR in 30 AB's... Augusto Rodriquez went 0-3, as his post season struggles continue... Roberto Perez lead everyone with 3 hits... Derek Campbell continued to struggle in the outfield. He had 2 errors in 86 chances this season in RF.

Key Play: In the second, with runners on 1st and 3rd after the Derek Campbell error, Miguel struck out Giles for out number two, and again in the 3rd with a runner on third, Miguel struck out Glenn for out number 2. Both of these plays took a lot of pressure of the fielders and showed that Miguel was on his game.

GM Post Game Thoughts: You have to happy with a shutout victory in game 1 and with Matos on the hill for game 2, I am feeling good. Miguel has been lights out all season, and today wasn't any different. He knows how to get himself out of trouble and does it consistently... My only concerns are Augusto Rodriquezs' bat and Derek Campbells' glove. Rodriquez hit over .300 this season and it would be nice to see him hit the ball in the post season. Campbell needs to concentrate more in the field... Overall it was a good day and a good win. I look forward to game 2.

Delaware Conference: Wilmington @ Dover
Iron Pigs starter Alberto Valentine got roughed up giving up 5 runs on 5 hits and 6 walks in the first 3, before getting pulled. But Mendel Schutters couldn't keep the Iron Pigs at bay, as he got hit hard in the 6th giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks, as the Iron Pigs scored 4 in the 6th. The Generals fought back, but just couldn't catch them.

Wilmington Leads 1-0

Game Notes: Dover lost their star catcher in the first when he was ejected for arguing a strike call... Ex-Cavalier Scott Smith gave up 3 runs on 4 hits in 1.1 innings of relief for the Iron Pigs... Don White drove in 4 for the Iron Pigs, but the biggest blow was delivered by Jorge Quintero in the 6th who doubled in 2 with 2 outs.

Game 2 Conference Playoffs

Game 2 of the Conference Championships

Carlos Delgado gets the start for the Admirals. He was there #2 man most of the season. (#1 is out with an injury) On the season he put up solid numbers in 32 starts, going 13-11 4.16. Against us this season he was 0-3 5.19 ERA. For the Cav's we go with Jose Matos. Matos was 23-5 on the season and 2-0 2.45 against the Admirals.

Lineup: With a righty on the hill I had to make a call, put Derek Campbell at 2nd and sit Jesus Rivera or put Campbell at short and sit Augusto Rodriquez... even though Augusto didn't hit Delgado very well this season (1-7) he is my shortstop. I feel bad for Jesus, but I feel like this is the right move.

After 4 innings Matos has 57 pitches, he has a stamina of 13, he averaged 101 pitches per game this season.

Inning 5:
Top: Payne singles to left. Chavez doubles to left, Payne goes to third. Glenn flies out to deep left. Payne scores, Chavez heads to third. Matsurra singles to right, scoring Chavez and tying the game. Hughes grounds into the 5-4-3, Campbell made a solid play at second.
Bottom: Roberto Perez doubles to deep right. Jose Rodriquez strikes out. Derek Campbell reaches on a error by the 3B Colon, Perez scores. Pablo Freitas hits the first pitch he sees 374 feet over the left field fence, scoring Campbell. Mauro Candelaria grounds out to short. King Brock doubles down the left field line. Inning 7:

Bottom: Ed Duke strikes out. Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to first. Kent Davis goes down 3-1.
Annapolis 2, Norfolk 8

Inning 8:
Top: Hughes walks... Pitching coach visits the mound, Matos says he has some left. I deliberate and stick with him... Williams strikes out. Colon flies out to right. Giles strikes out.
Bottom: Augusto Flores comes into pitch for the Admirals... Roberto Perez pops out to third... Javier Janchez pinch hits for Jose Rodriquez... Janchez grounds out to third... Jesus Rivera pinch hits for Derek Campbell... Jesus Rivera hits a 412 ft bomb to left center. Pablo Freitas strikes out.

Inning 9:
Top: Janchez remains in the game in RF, Rivera remains in the game at 2B. And Dalton Whitaker replaces Jose Matos on the hill... Berry weakly singles down the third base line. Payne singles to right. Berry to third. Chavez strikes out. Glenn grounds into the game ending 6-3 DP.
Annapolis 2, Norfolk 9
Norfolk leads the series 2-0

W: Jose Matos (1-0)
L: Carlos Delgado (0-1)
HR: NFK: Pablo Freitas (1), Jesus Rivera (2), Augusto Rodriquez (1)

POG: Pablo Freitas 2-3 2 Runs, 2 RBI
Attendance: 43760

Key Play: After the Admirals fought back to tie the game, an error by third baseman Jose Colon scored Roberto Perez and the next batter Pablo Freitas hit a 2-run HR. Giving the Cav's a 3-run lead and taking the wind from the Admirals sails

Game Notes: The Cav's had 12 hits, with 5 players getting 2 each. Pablo Freitas and Mauro Candelaria lead the way with 2 RBI each... Kiyonobu Matsuura lead the Admirals with 3 hits, and their #8 and #9 hitters (Berry and Payne) added 2 each... Joe Payne is the same Joe Payne as the one that played for us a few years back... Sun Ho will take on Curt Webster in game 3.

Post Game Thoughts: We came in and did what we had to do, won two games at home. Now we head into Annapolis with Joe Parker and Sun Ho on the hill. A sweep would be best, but we need to at least pull out one win. If we go into game 5 Miguel Contreras gets the ball, we are only carrying 4 starters... Jesus Rivera hit another HR, showing me that he put his awful post season last year behind him and is ready to play. He came into the playoffs red hot. I guess getting removed from the starting lineup had an effect on him... Augusto Rodriquez added 2 hits, as many as he had last post season. Hopefully he will continue to hit the ball... Jose Matos looked good, he went 8 innings threw 111 pitches. The bullpen should be well rested for the games in Annapolis... King Brock has hit the ball very well this playoffs, he is giving me confidence that its time to move Jose Rodriquez (along with Pablo Freitas) this off-season. Thats a discussion for another day.

Delaware Conference: Wilmington @ Dover
The Generals jumped out to a 1-0 lead after two, but a 5 run 3rd was all the Iron Pigs would need, as the pitches found their grooves. The Iron Pigs had one of the games bests Marcos Estrada on the hill and he did was he does best, dominate.

Wilmington Iron Pigs lead the series 2-0

Game Notes: Jose Velasquez had a rough 3rd inning, thanks to 3 walks and a 2-out 2-strike catchers interference call, the Iron Pigs scored an additional 3 runs. This was the game changer, as the Generals couldn't get anything going after that point... Marcos Estrada helped his cause with 3 hits and 2 RBI's... Claude Bond of the Generals, had 2 hits to lead the Generals (He is own my radar, we will be making a play for him this offseason)... The Generals need Pedro Galvan to get on the bases and put pressure on the Iron Pigs pitchers. Pedro is 0-6 with a walk this series. He lead the league with 80 steals, can't steal if you don't get on.

Game 3 Conference Playoffs

Game 3 of the Conference Championships

Joe Parker is only 85% rested, so we will be going with the 100% rested Sun Ho. Ho was 2-2 posting a whopping 7.45 ERA against the Admirals this season, and suprisingly this will be his first playoff appearance. He as been with the Cavaliers since 2013. On the hill for the Admirals will be Curt Webster. Webster was 2-1 6.39 against the Cavaliers this season, so it could turn out to be an interesting game.

Lineup Change: I tweaked the lineup for game 3. Mauro Candelaria moves from the 6th hole to the 3rd hole, King Brock moves up from the 7th to the 6th spot. Julio Romero will get the start at Catcher and bat 7th and Jesus Rivera will be at 2nd batting 8th. Derek Campbell will play RF. I am going with the hot bat, as Jose Rodriquez hasn't hit the ball this postseason (or September). It does give us some pop on the bench and I'd expect Jose to get a swing or two in before the end of the game.

Inning 1 (Probability to win ANP: 53.92%):
Top: Kent Davis doubles to start things off. Roberto Perez reaches second on a throwing error by shortstop Chavez, Davis scores. Mauro Candelaria lines out to short. Derek Campbell pops out to short. Pablo Freitas pops out to third.
Bottom: Chavez makes up for his fielding error, by hitting the 2nd pitch he sees 353 feet over the right field fence. Glenn singles to right. Matsuura walks. Hughes hits a grounder to first. Glenn moves to third. Matsuura goes to second. Williams walks to load the bases. Colon walks, Glenn scores. Giles hits a dribbler to Ho, who forces Matsuura out at home. Berry flies out to right.
Norfolk 1, Annapolis 2

A blown chance for us in the top, and I feel we got lucky only giving up 2 in the bottom. Bullpen is on standby.

Inning 2:
Top: King Brock flies out to the warning track in RF. Julio Romero walks. Jesus Rivera doubles to right center, Romero to third. Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to short, Romero scores, Rivera to third. Kent Davis grounds out to first.
Bottom: Payne flies out to left. Chavez flies out to left. Glenn singles on a looper to center. Matsuura flies out to center.
Norfolk 2, Annapolis 2

Inning 3:
Top: Roberto Perez starts the inning off right, with a 352 foot blast. Mauro Candelaria walks. Derek Campbell grounds out weakly to third, Candy moves to second. Pablo Freitas flies out to deep left. King Brock singles to right, scoring Candy. Julio Romero flies out to right.
Bottom: Hughes goes down 3-1. Steve Williams singles to right. Colon walks, Williams to second... Jamie King begins to throw softly in the Cav's pen... Giles ends the inning with a 4-6-3... King sits down.
Norfolk 4, Annapolis 2

Inning 4:
Top: Jesus Rivera singles to left. Augusto Rodriquez flies out left. Kent Davis grounds out softly to third, Rivera moves to second. Roberto Perez walks. Mauro Candelaria singles up the middle. Rivera scores, Perez goes to second. Derek Campbell grounds out to the pitcher.
Bottom: Berry leads the inning off with a 397 no-question blast. Payne walks... King is back up, shouldn't of sat him... Chavez walks, Payne to second... a visit to the mound, Ho says he is fine. He needs to concentrate... Glenn pops out to first. Matsuura walks to load the bases... Jamie King comes into the pitch... King hits Hughes, Chavez scores. Williams flies out to deep left. Payne scores, Matsuura moves to third. Colon strikes out.
Norfolk 5, Annapolis 5

Inning 5:
Top: Pablo Freitas grounds out to third. King Brock strikes out. Julio Romero pops out to second.
Bottom: Giles doubles to start the inning. Berry strikes out. Payne strikes out. Chavez grounds out to Rivera.
Norfolk 5, Annapolis 5

Inning 6:
Top: Jesus Rivera hits a nubber and goes down 2-3. Augusto Rodriquez reaches first on a catchers interference. Kent Davis grounds into a 6-3 DP.
Bottom: Derek Carter (R) and Elmer Hawkins (L) start to warm up... Glenn singles to right. Matsuura grounds into a 3-6 FC... Hawkins comes into pitch w/ 2 lefties up... Hughes grounds into the 4-6-3 inning ending DP.
Norfolk 5, Annapolis 5

Inning 7:
Top: Roberto Perez grounds out to second. Mauro Candelaria grounds out to second. Derek Campbell flies out to deep left.
Bottom: Williams strikes out. Colon singles to left. Giles strikes out... Derek Carter comes into pitch... Berry hits 2-0 fastball 407 feet to dead center. Payne grounds out to second.
Norfolk 5, Annapolis 7

Inning 8:
Top: Pablo Freitas singles to right. King Brock sinlges to left, moving Freitas to third... Jose Rodriquez will pinch hit for Julio Romero... Jose grounds into a 4-6-3, Freitas scores... Arturo Herrera comes into pitch... Jesus Rivera walks... Ed Yoder comes into to pitch, Javier Janchez will pinch hit for Augusto Rodriquez... Janchez doubles to center, moving Rivera to third... Janchez pulled up lame and will be removed. Jose Escamilla replaces Janchez on the bases... Kent Davis singles up the middle, Rivera and Escamilla score. Roberto Perez doubles off the center field walk, Davis scores. Mauro Candelaria grounds out to short.
Bottom: Jose Escamilla stays in the game to play short, Ed Duke replaces Jose Rodriquez in the lineup and will catch. And Will Rose comes into pitch... Chavez walks. Glenn singles to right. Matsuura singles to right. Chavez scores. Glenn to second. Hughes flies out to center. Glenn moves to third. Williams grounds into the inning ending (and gave saving) 6-4-3
Norfolk 9, Annapolis 8

Inning 9:
Top: Brent Wagner, the Admirals closer, enters the game... Derek Campbell gives us some breathing room with a 389 foot shot. Pablo Freitas pops out to second. King Brock singles to left. Ed Duke flies out to left. Jesus Rivera reaches on an E6, Brock heads to second. Jose Escamilla doubles to right-center, Brock and Rivera score... Augusto Flores comes into to pitch... Kent Davis grounds out to second.
Bottom: PH'er Mitchell flies out to center. Giles flies out to left. Berry singles up the middle. Payne grounds into a 64 FC.
Norfolk 12, Annapolis 8
Norfolk leads the Series 3-0

W: Derek Carter (1-0)
L: Ed Yoder (0-1)
S: Will Rose (2)
HR: Roberto Perez (1), Derek Campbell (1), Roberto Chavez (1), Clyde Berry 2 (2)

POG: Clyde Berry 3-5 2 HR's, 2 Runs, 3 RBI
Attendance: 52,647

Key Play: With runners on 1st and 3rd, the one on third the tying, and the best hitter for the Admirals up to bat Steve Williams. Will Rose got him to ground into an inning ending, rallying killing 6-4-3. Keepin the Cav's ahead going into the 9th.

Game Notes: Sun Ho walked 7 batters in just 3.1 innings... Dav Glenn had 4 hits for the Admirals to lead both teams... King Brock ad 3 hits to lead the Cav's as he just keeps coming through when needed... Jesus Rivera had 2 hits and scored 3 runs... Kent Davis and Roberto Perez each had 2 hits and 2 RBI's... Roberto Chavez scored 3 runs for the Admirals.

Post Game Thoughts: Derek Campbell finally got a hit in this years playoffs and it was a big one. He now has 3 hits in 25 career post season at-bats... Augusto Rodriquez went 0-2 and is now hitting .104 (5-48) during his playoff career. His defense is too valuable to remove him from the lineup... We are awaiting the news on Javier's injury. If the injury keeps him from the WS roster, it will allow us to add another pitcher. I wish Arturo Ramirez wasn't hurt he'd by my #4 starter. After Ho's performance, I will have to decide Rielly, Ho or Gould?... Parker will be on the hill for Game 4, he has a lot of stamina, so our pen should get some rest... I always liked Sun Ho, and I am sad to see him deteriorate over the past year. The big strike is his control going from 11 to 9 in the past year+. Its going to be another busy off-season.

Delaware Conference: Dover @ Wilmington
This time it was Dover with the 5-run inning, which was enough to get them the win. As the Away team has won ever game this series so far. A three run HR by Chris Thomas was the blow in the 4th.

Wilmington Leads the series 2-1

Game Notes: Chris Thomas was the POG, going 4-4 with 2 HR's and 4 RBI. Pedro Morin also HR'd for the Generals... The Iron Pigs hit 2 HR's, bot solo-shots, by Don Perkins and George Corbett... The away team has won each game this series, but more telling is the team that has walked the most has won ever game this series!... Game 4 features a closer turned starter, and one-time 20 game winner, demoted to middle relief, promoted back to starter... With Estrada slated to start game 6, its important for the Generals to tie up with a win in game 4.

Game 4 Conference Playoffs

Game 4 of the Conference Championships

It is Joe Parker's time to shine. Parker had a slow start to the season, but finished strong, to the point I was trying to resign him, but just didn't have the money. He finished 14-10 4.03, and was rock solid against the Admirals this season, 2-0 1.89. He will go up against Macario Abelaira who was 11-5 in 10 games as a MR and 23 as a starter, posting a 4.85. He had a rough time agains the Cav's this season going 1-1 with a 7.80.

This games lineup will look just like last games, but with Ed Duke back behind the plate.

Bottom: Colon grounds out to short. Giles grounds out to second. Berry flies out to left.
Norfolk 2, Annapolis 2

Inning 8:
Top: Pablo Freitas grounds out to first. King Brock flies out to the warning track. Ed Duke flies out to left.

Norfolk 2, Annapolis 2

Inning 9:

Bottom: Jose Escamilla comes into play short... Matsuura grounds out to third. Hughes grounds out to second. Mauro Candelaria makes a highlight reel play to retire Williams.
Norfolk 2, Annapolis 2

Inning 10:
Top: Roberto Perez grounds out to first. Candelaria grounds out to second. Derek Campbell grounds out to first.
Bottom: Colon reaches on an E5 (Perez)... With 2 of the next 3 Admirals hitting lefty, Will Rose replaces Parker. Parker threw 92 pitches... Giles grounds out 3-1, Colon goes to second. Norfolk 3, Annapolis 2
Norfolk wins the series 4-0!!!

W: Ivan Pineda (1-0)
L: Arturo Herrera (0-1)
S: Dalton Whitaker (1)

HR: Dave Hughes (1)

POG: Joe Parker 9 IP, 5 H, 2 Runs, 1 BB, 4 K
Attendance: 52358

Key Play: The key play of this game was the leadoff walk in the 12th. Walks kill and this is proof. The walk was the difference in the game... that and the wind-stopped HR in the bottom of the 12th.

Series MVP: Will Rose. Rose pitched in 3 of the 4 games, getting 2 saves. Rose threw 4.1 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 2 strike outs.

Game Notes: The Cav's had 6 total hits, with Kent Davis and Mauro Candelaria getting 2 each. The combined 0-17!... Bill Giles lead the way with 2 hits for the Admirals... Jesus Rivera who has been red hot this series, left 6 men on in the frist 3 innings!... The games difference? Annapolis walked 1 time, the Cavaliers walked 5.

My Thoughts: I am disappointed that I won't be able to sign Joe Parker to an extension. He proved his worth and was just awesome today. I am pretty sure he could of gone all 12 if I let him, but when you have one of the games best 'pens... These games are the ones that are a) frustrating: when there are innings without hits, and when you have the opportunity its missed and b) nerving: close games going on and on, and one mistake makes the difference... We will have a nice break, for better or worse, before our first game, so our pitchers will be nice and rested. I am still unsure who is going to pitch in game 4, Ho, Reilly or someone else... Javier Janchez is out with a strained muscle, so he will be removed from the roster. We will be playing in at least 2 non-DH games, so I am going to look to bring up a position player. I have some decisions before game 1... This game was a brutal game for the offense, but Parker and the pen kept it close, and it worked on in the end. Fun times.

Delaware Conference Championships Game 4: Dover at Wilmington
As this series has continued the away team continues to win... Tony Garcia dominated for the Generals giving up 4 hits in 5.2 innings, as the bullpen of 3 continued to keep the powerful bats of Wilmington quiet. The walk theory didn't work with this game, as the Iron Pigs walked more 4-2.

Key Play: The Iron Pigs mounted an attack in the bottom of the second, as they loaded the bases thanks to a single and 2 walks. Bases loaded no one out, Tony Morales hit a laser right at the second baseman "" who flipped to short to complete the DP. The next batter grounded out. A missed opportunity and it seemed to give Garcia the confidence he needed, as he dominated the final 3+ innings he pitched.

The series is tied at 2

One more game in Wilmington then the final two in Dover...
