April's notable games
April 24th, 1902
Beckley Reaches 2,000 Jake Beckley has gone through many bats during his playing career. None of them means as much to him as the one he used to crack career hit number 2,000 at Palace of the Fans yesterday. The 34-year-old Reds first baseman told reporters after the game, "I plan to keep this bat at home in my own private Hall of Fame." It was a happy day for Beckley from the standpoint of the 2,000-hit milestone, but a little disappointing, too. Despite his achievement, Cincinnati dropped the contest to the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1. For the day, Beckley finished the day with 2 hits in 3 at-bats. In 1,628 games, Beckley has a career .305 batting average and a .360 on-base percentage. He has hit 66 home runs with 1,115 RBIs and 1,177 runs scored. St. Louis Cardinals (1-6) over Cincinnati Reds (4-3) |

May's notable games...
May 2nd, 1902
Keeler 5-for-5 for Brooklyn The Brooklyn Superbas stopped the Boston Beaneaters by a score of 7-4 at Washington Park, with the lion's share of the credit going to right fielder Willie Keeler. The 30-year-old had a career day, collecting 5 hits. "Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate," Keeler said later. "He wants to hit the ball hard." Keeler did just that in his 5 at-bats, much to the chagrin of the Beaneaters. "Not much that I can say," offered Boston manager Frank Selee. "He just hammered the heck out of us." Willie Keeler singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th and singled in the 8th. Keeler is batting at a .263 pace this season, picking up 15 hits in 57 at-bats with no home runs, 3 RBIs, and 8 runs scored. Brooklyn Superbas (7-8) over Boston Beaneaters (7-8) Coakley Sizzles in No-Hitter Andy Coakley really did a number on the Boston Americans at Huntington Avenue Grounds -- and that number was zero. The Washington Senators hurler had what he later called "one of the best moments of my life," tossing a no-hitter and leading the Senators to victory, 3-0. "This is something special," Coakley said. "I knew from the fifth inning that I had a no-hitter working. I tried to get it out of my mind, but you just can't. They have too many scoreboards in the park. They're everywhere you look." The right-hander faced only 15 batters in the no-hit gem, struck out 2 and walked 0. "We simply couldn't get any wood on the ball," Boston manager Jimmy Collins said when asked about the epic performance. "Coakley was brilliant out there. He certainly had our number." Washington Senators (5-4) over Boston Americans (6-3) May 8th, 1902 Nichols Too Tough, Blanks Cincinnati The strong arm of Kid Nichols dealt a lot of misery to the Reds. He tossed a complete-game shutout to spark the Boston Beaneaters to a 5-0 win. In today's contest at Palace of the Fans, Nichols limited Cincinnati to 4 hits and had 2 strikeouts and 2 walks. To date this season, Nichols has a record of 3 wins and 2 losses and a 3.64 ERA. He has appeared in 5 games and struck out 13 in 42 innings. Boston Beaneaters (10-9) over Cincinnati Reds (8-10) May 18th, 1902 Kitson Stops St. Louis Brooklyn Superbas hurler Frank Kitson logged a 5-hit, complete game shutout over the Cardinals, stopping them, 6-0, at League Park. "I felt great out there," Kitson said in his postgame interview. "After the second or third inning, I got real comfortable. Hopefully this is a building block for me. I'd love a few more starts like this." He rung up 2 strikeouts and gave up 3 walks in the performance. This year, Kitson has made 7 starts, thrown 49.1 innings, fanned 13 batters and walked 18. His won-lost record is 1-6 with a 6.02 ERA. Brooklyn Superbas (13-16) over St. Louis Cardinals (11-17) |

"Things were in his favor in every one of his at-bats," White Sox skipper Clark Griffith said to the press corps after the game. "He got hitters' counts." Fultz agreed, saying that getting ahead early in the counts was "the key" to his game. "Once you get ahead, it makes it a lot easier because you get a better pitch to hit," he said. "You know the pitcher has to come in with it. And you're ready." Dave Fultz singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a two-run double in the 4th, singled in the 6th, grounded out in the 7th, and singled in the 8th. He got them from his teammates and he got them at the plate during an outstanding hitting performance against the Cleveland Bronchos. Moran smashed 5 hits in 5 at-bats on his monster day, leading his club to a 6-1 win. "Pat was hitting everything," said Browns manager Hugh Duffy. "It really was a special game for him." In the opposing dugout, Bronchos manager Jimmy McAleer told BNN beat writers that Moran "ambushed" the club. "Obviously we didn't have much success against him, but we'll have another chance," the skipper said. "Hopefully, Moran oversleeps next time." Pat Moran singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI triple in the 4th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and singled in the 9th. This year, Moran is batting .333 with no home runs. He tossed 159 pitches over 11 innings, allowing 4 runs on 14 hits. The 7th-place Beaneaters improved to 39-45. The defining moment came in the bottom of the 11th for Boston. That's when Pat Carney hit a run-scoring double off 25-year-old right fielder Doc White to win the game. The home crowd went wild. "We just battled, never quit, and continued to grind out at-bats trying to create some opportunities," said Boston manager Frank Selee. Boston Beaneaters (39-45) over Philadelphia Phillies (41-44) July 28th, 1902 Callahan Befuddles Washington in 4-0 Chicago Win The Washington Senators struggled at the plate against White Sox hurler Nixey Callahan, who shackled them on 3 hits while hurling a complete-game 4-0 shutout. Callahan finished the game with 1 strikeout and no walks in an excellent mound performance. "He pitched real well," Chicago manager Clark Griffith said. "Nixey made pitches when he had to. August's notable games
August 7th, 1902
Cleveland Wins, 8-7, in 13 Innings Philadelphia first baseman Harry Davis was sensational. He went 6-7 with 2 doubles and 4 singles. He scored 2 times. But it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. Cleveland beat the Athletics, 8-7, in 13 innings. The win went to Jack Bracken in relief, making him now 2-0. Frank Corridon took the loss for Philadelphia. Cleveland is 42-53 and Philadelphia, with the loss, 48-46. The clutch hit was provided by Frank Scheibeck. He delivered a walk-off run-scoring single off Frank Corridon in the bottom of the 13th. "We kept coming at guys," Cleveland manager Jimmy McAleer said. "We kept digging." Cleveland Bronchos (42-53) over Philadelphia Athletics (48-46) August 10th, 1902 Dresser Shines in 1-0 Gem Bob Dresser was in a zone of his own most of the day, shutting out the Detroit Tigers on 1 hit. "He was too darn good for us today," grumbled Detroit manager George Stallings after the 1-0 loss to the Philadelphia Athletics. Dresser finished with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks in a strong outing. In the postgame press conference, Philadelphia manager Connie Mack said Dresser "had good velocity, good movement and had those guys off balance. He just pitched his butt off." To date this year, in 25 starts, Dresser has crafted a 15-9 mark with a 2.84 ERA. Philadelphia Athletics (51-46) over Detroit Tigers (42-55) August 13th, 1902 Beaneaters Down Pirates, 8-7 The Boston Beaneaters defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in 11 innings, 8-7, in part because of third baseman Terry Turner. Turner was 5-6 with a home run and 4 singles, while scoring 2 and driving in 4 for the Beaneaters. Bill Dinneen snagged the win in relief. He goes to 17-9 on the season. Jesse Tannehill suffered the loss. The setback makes Pittsburgh 64-38. The Beaneaters got a clutch hit from catcher Malachi Kittridge. In the bottom of the 11th, he hit a run-scoring single to right, to win the game for the Beaneaters. "It's great when the crowd is energized," Kittridge said. Boston Beaneaters (47-52) over Pittsburgh Pirates (64-38) August 17th, 1902 Cardinals Topple Superbas with Late Rally St. Louis shortstop Bobby Wallace was a significant contributor in his team's 7-6 triumph over the Brooklyn Superbas. He was 5 for 5 with a double and 4 singles. He drove in 2 runs for the Cardinals. The Cardinals win now puts them at 54-52. Batting in the bottom of the ninth, Roy Brashear knew the outcome hung in the balance. So did Brooklyn pitcher Gene Wright, who prepared to bear down. The result? With two outs, Brashear hit a run-scoring single -- and the Cardinals celebrated a big win. "What a great game, great atmosphere," Wallace said. St. Louis Cardinals (54-52) over Brooklyn Superbas (58-50) August 28th, 1902 McGraw on Fire: 5-for-5 for Baltimore John McGraw told the press after his 5-hit day, "Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate. He wants to hit the ball hard." Well, that's just what McGraw of the Baltimore Orioles did against the St. Louis Browns. He went to the plate 5 times and 5 times he delivered base hits, but his club still suffered a defeat, 8-5. "Not much I can say," offered McGraw in the postgame press conference. "I got a bunch of hits, but it would have been much better to get a win. Can I trade 5 hits for the win?" John McGraw tripled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and singled in the 9th. This year, McGraw is hitting at a .293 pace with no home runs and 42 RBIs. Connecting almost every time he went to the plate, Steinfeldt finished the day with a total of 5 hits in 5 at-bats. His strong individual effort propelled the Reds to a win, 19-1. "Steinfeldt was really good and we were really bad," groaned Cardinals manager Patsy Donovan. "Next time he's that hot, we'll just walk him." Harry Steinfeldt singled in the 1st, hit a two-run triple in the 2nd, was hit by a pitch in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th and hit an RBI single in the 8th. 1902 World Series results
1902 World Series: Philadelphia Athletics vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
Results Game 1, October 8th, 1902, Exposition Park Road Win Lifts Philadelphia to 1-0 Lead in WS The Philadelphia Athletics started the World Series in dominant fashion, blowing out the host Pittsburgh Pirates at Exposition Park by a score of 12-4 and securing an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Athletics left fielder Lefty Davis went 2 for 4 with 2 singles and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 3. In the top of the fifth, Philadelphia second baseman Nap Lajoie had a productive at-bat. With the bases loaded and no one out, Lajoie stroked a bases-clearing double to right. It made the score 11-3, Philadelphia. For the game, he was 3-6 with 2 doubles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. "Every team in baseball loses," Pirates manager Fred Clarke said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. Athletics lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 9th, 1902, Exposition Park Raucous Exposition Park Crowd Propels Pirates to 9-5 Victory; Series Tied at 1 The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Philadelphia Athletics, 9-5, in Game 2 of the World Series. Making an impact was second baseman Claude Ritchey, who was 2-3 with 2 singles and a walk. He scored 3 runs. The win moves Pittsburgh into a 1-1 tie with Philadelphia in the series. An inflection point occurred with two out in the bottom of the fifth. That's when Pirates pitcher Jesse Tannehill hit a cutter from Bob Dresser for a 2-run single. Just like that, Pittsburgh was up, 2-1. "They say the first rule of the playoffs is to win the home games," Ritchey said afterward. "It feels nice, but it is kind of what we were supposed to do." Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at Columbia Park in Philadelphia. Series tied 1-1 Game 3, October 11th, 1902, Columbia Park Road Win Lifts Pittsburgh to 2-1 Lead in WS Riding the 4-hit performance of shortstop Honus Wagner, the Pittsburgh Pirates got a road win against the Philadelphia Athletics, 10-4, in Game 3 of the World Series. Wagner went 4-5 with a double and 3 singles. He scored 3 times and drove in 2 for the Pirates, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 1. A key moment came with two out in the top of the fourth. That's when Wagner hit a slider from Wiley Piatt for a run-scoring single, putting Pittsburgh up, 4-2. "We're happy," Wagner told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Columbia Park in Philadelphia. Pirates lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 12th, 1902, Columbia Park Athletics Clip Pirates, 1-0, in WS Contest The Philadelphia Athletics got a complete game effort from starter Eddie Plank to move into a 2-2 tie with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the best-of-7 World Series. The Philadelphia left-hander went the distance at Columbia Park, cooling off the Pittsburgh Pirates and striking out 8 to help Philadelphia take the 1-0 win that knotted the series. Plank earned the win, going 9 strong innings for Philadelphia. The left-hander allowed just 2 hits, while striking out 8. Pittsburgh hitters had little success against him. April's notable games
April 24th, 1903
#200 for New York Pitcher Clark Griffith History was made today at American League Park -- Clark Griffith won game #200 to seal his name in the league record books. The New York ace downed the Washington Senators 9-2 to gain entrance into the elite 200 Club. "I was wound up at first. I think I threw too hard," remarked Griffith, "I had to calm down and go out there and pitch...not just throw. I think I got better as the game wore on. I started to think less about 200 wins and more about doing what I had to do." Career-to-date, Griffith has a record of 200 wins and 135 losses and a 3.44 ERA. New York Highlanders (2-1) over Washington Senators (1-2) April 29th, 1903 5-for-5 Game for Seybold It was a big day for Socks Seybold and he brought the Philadelphia Athletics along for the ride.
