I wouldn't fire you. You're not reckless with the cash, have the ability to get good players for below market, and have consistently fielded teams that make the playoffs. And while postseason success has been elusive of late I just can't blame you too heavily for that. After all, anything can (and often does) happen in a short series.

I wouldn't fire you because in my online league that I've been in for eight seasons I've NEVER had a winning season yet. This Year I finished with 60 wins, 102 losses (.370).
So if I keep my job, you certainly do too.......wait, someone just slid a letter under my door....... |

Firings under these circumstances happen all the time in sports. No one is going to manage a team for 23 seasons anymore, and there is minimal tolerance for managers or coaches that win divisions but fail to win in the playoffs. Bobby Cox is probably the last of the managers who could survive playoff failures on multiple occasions.

Exactly. Torre was nearly fired after last season, and we all know that it's just a matter of time. And he's nowhere near as far removed from his championships as the original poster is.
I play Football Manager, one of the other games from SI, and these kinds of 'sackings' happen regularly. Gamers will manage at a club for 15 or 20 years with huge success, and then they will be fired right after having just one disappointing season. But it reflects the reality of the football world with the top clubs, and baseball is no different these days. |

Yes, I would fire you after 23 years for some new blood and new talent that isn't just happy with 2nd best. Thru your whole resume you promoted yourself as a just get by coach/manager. Neither looking for the best talent or even wanting it by your own admissions. If I'm paying the big bucks I want winners and dynasties like the Yankees who are in the world series more often than not. I don't care about the money, spend it, get me the best and one of your problems that I noticed as an owner is you didn't keep up with "clutch" pitchers, oh they are great during the year winning you 120 games and then in the playoffs when it really counts their "clutch" performance is awful. So, as Donald Trump woulds say "YOU'RE FIRED"

Each year I finished second in starter and first in reliever ERA. Every year in the playoffs my starters' ERA jumped by two full runs and my relievers' doubled. Over 22 series Trevor Hoffman (who led the majors in saves and save percentage all six seasons) averaged better than one blown save per series. I led the majors in stolen base success percentage every year, but in the playoffs averaged well under .500. I set records for fewest errors and highest fielding percentage in the regular season, but always got lit up for many errors in the playoffs. (In my first season Steve Finley, who went errorless all season, committed three errors in the final two games of the NLCS, costing me both games. Weird stuff happens in the playoffs, and managers can't (or shouldn't) be held responsible for most of it. Qrashman stays. |

It seems that all pro sports is about today is making money. As you're making money and the fans are still coming in, I sure wouldn't fire you.
You're still there until it gets to the point where the attendance drops and the money starts dropping. |

I'd rather have a GM who can get the team to the playoffs every season so they always have a shot, even if they aren't the best on paper, than a GM who sells out the farm to be the best for a year and has to go into rebuilding periods every few years while the team tanks.
In other words, I'd keep you on.

If you are consistently fielding a competitive team, making a nice profit, and keeping fans happy then I see no reason why to fire you. Especially if you are making the playoffs the majority of the time. As a GM your job is to put the best team on the field within the scope of an owner's specifications. I.E. the expectations of the Yankees compared to the Athletics.
You stay good sir. |

I despise what appears to be conventional wisdom in sports (especially baseball): that some teams/managers can't win in the playoffs.
Success is 97% (made that up) decided by making it to the playoffs. The 162 game grind, the management of months of potential adversity. Once in the playoffs, a good deal of luck (i.e. the hottest team) succeeds. So, yeah, without giving it a second thought, I'd keep you on. I'd give you an extension. |

The team with the MLB's best record at the end of the year still loses a considerable number of games. If you win 98 games then it means you lost 64. The margin between wins and losses is rather underwhelming. |

Update: 2024 season my team goes 99-63 to win the NL West.
I sweep the Astros in the 1st round. 2nd round my closer (highest paid in the game) blows 9th/11th inning leads in games 4 and 5 and I lose the series 4-1 to a far inferior team. Good news: I won my first 2nd round game in 16 seasons...even though I've made the playoffs in 10 of those 16 seasons. Another great season, knocked out in the playoffs.
