Games 123-125: Boston Americans vs. Milwaukee Brewers
Not the results that the Boston fans were looking for in the 3-game series against the Brewers:
Game 123: The Americans (72-51) fell behind early and could not catch up to the Brewers (51-72) as they lost the game 6 to 5. Frank Owen (15-16) picked up the win by allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits and 2 walks to finish with a Game Score of 56. Patsy Donovan (3 for 4, 2 Doubles, 1 Run, 2 RBIs) and Bill Hassamaer (3 for 4, Double, 2 RBIs, 1 Walk) had a great day at the plate. Jesse Tannehill (18-12) took the loss after allowing 6 runs (4 earned) on 9 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings; Game Score of 44. Bob Lawson pitched the final inning in the loss. Jesse Hoffmeister (2 for 5, Triple, 2 RBIs) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Frank Owen Game 124: An outstanding game by Cy Young helped Boston (73-51) steamroll Milwaukee (51-73) by a 7 to 1 score. Young (18-12), who is now 9-2 in his last 11 starts, limited the opposition to 1 earned un on 7 hits and 2 walks for a Game Score of 70. Bill Lange (2 for 5, Triple, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs), Fred Clarke (1 for 4, 2 Runs, 1 Walk), and John Farrell (3 for 5, 1 Run, 2 RBIs) provided the offense. "Sunny Jack" Sutthoff (12-18) was removed after 6 innings due to allowing 7 runs (4 earned runs) on 11 hits and 3 walks; Game Score of 29. Frank Killen and Billy Rhines had mop-up duties. Billy Lauder (2 for 4, Triple, 1 Run, 1 Walk) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Cy Young (Season: #15 / Career: #15) Game 125: A dramatic extra-innings game that ended with the Milwaukee Brewers (52-73) scoring the winning run after Boston (73-52) 3rd baseman Jesse Hoffmeister booted the ball in the 12th inning to end the game with a 2 to 1 score. While starting pitcher Tom Hughes (9-22, ND) did not get credited for the win, he pitched very well as he allowed just 1 earned run on 4 hits and 3 walks over 8 innings for a Game Score of 77. Gene Wright pitched 2 innings of relief and then turned it over for the final 2 innings of pitching by Roger Denzer (1-0). Fred Klobedanz (16-14) took the loss despite allowing 2 runs (0 earned) on 7 hits and 2 walks over 11 innings for a Game Score of 80. Win Mercer (2 for 6, 1 Walk, 1 Stolen Base) and Fred Clarke (2 for 4, 1 Walk) hit the ball well. Player of the Game: Tom Hughes

Games 126-128: Boston Americans vs. Baltimore Orioles
While their odds are slim, Boston continues to hold on to a glimmer of hope in the American League pennant chase. A 3-game sweep of the Orioles sure helped keep the dream alive.
Game 126: Boston (74-52) fell behind early and had to claw its way back to take a late-inning lead on the way to a 5 to 4 victory over the Orioles (51-75). While not his best game of the year, Noodles Hahn (22-12) did just enough to get his team the win, allowing 4 earned runs on 8 hits and 2 walks; Game Score of 61. The Americans had a fairly balanced hitting attack, with contributions from Win Mercer (2 for 5, Triple, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Frank Chance (2 for 4, Triple, 1 Walk), Kid Elberfeld (2 for 4, Double, 2 Runs), and Ossee Schreckengost (2 for 4, Double, 1 RBI). Wiley Piatt (11-18) got hit with the loss, as he allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 12 hits and 1 walk for a Game Score of 47. Jimmy Collins (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #23 / Career: #23) Game 127: This one was never in doubt, as Jesse Tannehill led the Americans (75-52) to an 8 to 1 win over the Orioles (51-76). Tannehill (19-12) cruised to victory by allowing just 1 earned run on 7 hits, striking out 7 to finish with a Game Score of 76. Despite no having any extra-base hits among the 13 hits on the day, Boston hitters played well including Bill Lange (3 for 6, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Kid Elberfeld (3 for 5, 1 Run, 1 RBI), and Ossee Schreckengost (1 for 3, 2 Runs, 2 Walks). Baltimore pitcher Ed Doheny (13-13) took the loss, allowing 7 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits and 5 walks over 6 innings; Game Score of 33. Zeke Wilson pitched the final 3 innings in the loss. Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #20 / Career: #20) Game 128: This was an odd game, as Boston (76-52) was cruising with a 3 to 0 lead on the pitching of Cy Young only to see Baltimore (51-77) storm back to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th inning. The contest was finally decided in the 12th inning, as the Americans prevailed by a score of 5 to 3. Young (19-12), tossing a season-high 210 pitches, allowed 3 earned runs on 15 hits and 3 walks for a Game Score of 65. Sport McAllister (2 for 2, Homerun, 1 Run, 2 RBIs), Fred Clarke (2 for 5, Double, Triple, 2 RBIs), and Win Mercer (3 for 5, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI) pounded the ball. Ed Murphy (12-13, ND) did not factor into the decision but did pitch well by allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits for a Game Score of 65. Christy Mathewson pitched 1 inning of scoreless ball and turned it over to Ted Lewis (7-16) who took the loss by allowing 2 runs (0 earned) on 2 hits over 2 innings of play. Jimmy Collins (4 for 6, Double, 2 RBIs) and Jesse Burkett (3 for 6, 1 Run) were outstanding at the plate today for the Orioles. Player of the Game: Cy Young (Season: #16 / Career: #16)

American League Player of the Week
While the Baltimore Orioles are no longer in the pennant chase, that hasn't stopped Jesse "Crab" Burkett from obliterating the ball. In picking up American League Player of the Week honors, Burkett went 15 for 22 (.682 batting average) with 2 Runs and 3 RBIs.

National League Player of the Week
It has been an up and down season for Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bill Hill, but last week things came together for the big lefty as he went 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA to capture National League Player of the Week honors.

Game Performance: Rube Waddell
What a season Rube Waddell is having, as the powerhouse pitcher struck out a record 16 batters in a tough 14 inning loss to the Cleveland Blues. Waddell's dominance this season has been incredible, with no pitcher able to match the sheer power this fireball hurler creates.

Games 129-131: Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Americans
The American League leading Detroit Tigers journeyed to Beantown in an attempt to fend off the late-season push of the Boston Americans.
Game 129: In a game that saw Detroit (84-45) jump out to an early lead, it was nice to see Boston (76-53) battle back to tie the game in the 7th inning. Unfortunately for the home crowd, the Tigers put up 5 runs in the 12th inning and this game was over. Doc White (23-11) picked up the win, allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks, striking out 8 to finish with a Game Score of 90. Mike Dolin (2 for 6, Double, 1 Run, 3 RBIs, 1 Stolen Base) and Tom Daly (3 for 5, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI, 1 Walk) contributed in the win. Fred Klobedanz (16-15) took the loss, allowing 7 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits and 2 walks in 11 2/3 innings to finish with a Game Score of 60. Chummy Gray pitched the final 1/3 inning. Player of the Game: Doc White Game 130: This time it was Boston's (77-53) turn to mount a late-inning rally to top the Tigers (84-46) by a 4 to 2 score. Noodles Hahn (23-12) pitched a solid game, allowing 2 earned runs on 11 hits, striking out 7 for a Game Score of 64. Kid Elberfeld (2 for 4, 1 Run, 1 RBI) and Ossee Schreckengost (1 for 3, Double, 1 RBI) provided the needed offense. Despite the defeat, Detroit pounded the ball with Charlie Hickman (2 for 4, Triple, 2 RBIs), Mike Dolin (2 for 5, Triple, 1 Run), and Freddy Parent (2 for 5, Double, 1 Run) playing well for the team. Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #24 / Career: #24) Game 131: In the rubber-match game, Boston (78-53) fended off the Tigers (84-47) to win the game 4 to 3. The Americans were led by the solid pitching of Jesse Tannehill (20-12) who allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 10 hits for a Game Score of 63. Kid Elberfeld (2 for 4, 2 RBIs) and Fred Clarke (2 for 4, 1 RBI) in the win. John Malarkey (21-11) was burdened with the loss after allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 9 hits and 3 walks; Game Score of 56. Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #21 / Career: #21)

Pennant Chase: Final 9 Games
With just 9 games remaining, the pennant chase is nearly wrapped up for the Tigers and the Beaneaters. It will take a miracle for one of the chase teams to jump ahead of the league leaders.

Games 132-134: Boston Americans vs. Chicago White Sox
Boston needed to sweep the White Sox to remain in the American League pennant chase. Instead, they dropped 2 of 3 games and all about dashed any postseason hope.
Game 132: A great game by the Americans (79-55), as they pounded the ball and got a solid pitching performance from Cy Young to get the 12 to 2 win over the White Sox (54-80). Young (20-12) allowed 2 runs (0 earned) on 6 hits and 3 walks for a Game Score of 70. The offense was paced by Fred Clarke (2 for 4, Double, Home Run, 1 Run, 6 RBIs), Bill Lange (3 for 4, 3 Runs, 1 RBI, 1 Walk), and Cy Young (2 for 4, Double, 2 Runs). John Anderson (3 for 5, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Hughie Jennings (2 for 4, 1 RBI, 1 Walk), and Harry Bay (2 for 4, 1 Run, 1 RBI) had a solid day at the plate. Boston pitcher Fred Klobedanz (16-16) took the loss after allowing 7 runs (4 earned) on 10 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings of play; Game Score of 31. Chummy Gray and Willie Garoni each pitched 1 inning of scoreless ball. Despite the loss, Kid Elberfeld (2 for 4, Triple, 1 Run, 3 RBIs) and Jesse Hoffmeister (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 1 Walk) played well. Player of the Game: Bill Carrick Game 134: Entering into the 9th inning, Boston was in control and Noodles Hahn was poised to pick up his 24th win of the season; Chicago had other plans! Scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th, the White Sox (54-80) topped the Americans (79-55) by a score of 3 to 2. Bill Phillips (16-17) picked up the win (Game Score of 73), while Noodles Hahn (23-13) was saddled with the loss (Game Score of 65). Well, it was a good run and there is much to be hopeful for, but the Boston Americans were officially eliminated from the pennant chase.

Boston Americans Lead Scout Dave Radovanovic provided a player development update for starting shortstop Kid Elberfeld and borderline reliever John Gilroy. Elberfeld saw a drop in power and eye ratings, while Gilroy saw a significant boost in movement but slight drop to control.

National League Batter of the Month
This is starting to sound like a broken record, but in case you haven't heard Nap Lajoie is an amazing hitter.
