2119 Award Winners

Friday, October 27th, 2119: Top Fielders Honored by National League
It's been said that the best offense is a good defense. That's why contending teams are always looking to improve on the defensive side of the game. Keeping runs from scoring is just as good as driving them in.

The top fielders have been chosen in the National League for 2119. Here are the Manny Ramirez Award winners:

Pitcher: Kai Baber (Arizona Diamondbacks)
Catcher: David Gutiérrez (Chicago Cubs)
First Baseman: Juan Cerda (St. Louis Cardinals)
Second Baseman: Jim Howard (San Francisco Giants)
Third Baseman: Rafael Hernández (Los Angeles Dodgers)
Shortstop: Brent Harris (Philadelphia Phillies)
Left Fielder: Juan Valdéz (New York Mets)
Center Fielder: Víctor Vargas (Los Angeles Dodgers)
Right Fielder: Jesús Amador (Houston Astros)

Friday, October 27th, 2119: Best Rookie Trophy Presented to Sitipala
The 2119 National League Bubba Crosby Award winner is Astaka Sitipala of the Cardinals.

In the 2119 season the 26-year-old St. Louis center fielder played in 157 games, recording a .263 batting average with 15 home runs, 66 RBIs and 98 runs scored.

Friday, October 27th, 2119: Shimizu Chosen NL's Best Pitcher
The Roger Clemens Award for 2119 has been presented and the National League winner is Sadao Shimizu of Pittsburgh.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Shimizu. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Pirates star told reporters.

Shimizu excelled with an impressive 20-9 record in 35 starts. In 242.2 innings he yielded 151 hits and 57 walks, while striking out 304 and compiling a fine 1.97 ERA.

Friday, October 27th, 2119: Valdéz Honored, 2119 NL Barry Bonds Award
Juan Valdéz has been around Major League Baseball enough to know a good hot streak when he sees one -- and he got to see one firsthand all year. For his standout run through the 2119 season, he's taking home the Barry Bonds Award in the National League.

The New York left fielder put up a batting average of .298 with 35 doubles, 9 triples, 55 home runs and 153 RBIs.

Friday, October 27th, 2119: AL Rewards Top Defenders for 2119
Making the play is the mark of great defenders. Spearing a liner, diving in the hole or crashing headlong into the wall makes no difference to these awe-inspiring fielders. Magicians they sometimes appear to be, showing up out of nowhere to rob a batter of a hit and to turn a hit into an out.

Pitchers love 'em, batters curse 'em... and fans are sometimes speechless. These defensive wizards will collect their 2119 American League Manny Ramirez Awards tonight:

Pitcher: Cris Marte (Portland Pilots)
Catcher: David Duncan (Cleveland Indians)
First Baseman: Loren Watson (Boston Red Sox)
Second Baseman: Ash Davis (New Orleans Jazz)
Third Baseman: Tony Day (Tampa Bay Rays)
Shortstop: Allen Hobbs (San Antonio Roadrunners)
Left Fielder: Pedro Canellas (Anaheim Angels)
Center Fielder: Sean Horn (Anaheim Angels)
Right Fielder: Cris López (Kansas City Royals)

Friday, October 27th, 2119: Portland's Moule Reaps AL's Rookie Award
Last spring Ronald Moule was happy to just make the Pilots roster. He was overjoyed to see the name "Moule" on the lineup card, too. Now the 25-year-old Portland first baseman has capped off his debut season by winning the coveted American League Bubba Crosby Award.

Moule won the award by hitting .259 and collecting 148 hits, 39 home runs, 121 RBIs and 46 walks, along with 80 runs scored and a .330 on-base percentage.

Friday, October 27th, 2119: Top Pitcher Award Announced by AL
An old hand in this game, Brennan Lane of the Hartford Whalers silenced critics as well as he silenced the opposition this year by winning the American League Roger Clemens Award.

The 36-year-old starter threw 254 innings, notched 347 strikeouts and put up a 23-6 record to claim the coveted award.

Friday, October 27th, 2119: António López Chosen AL's #1 Batter
António López got just what he wanted after deciding to enter the free-agent market: a strong offensive performance in 2119, highlighted by his selection as the American League Barry Bonds Award.

The 26-year-old shortstop for Detroit churned out a .303 batting average while amassing 166 hits, 41 doubles, 3 triples, 42 home runs, 108 runs and 127 RBIs.

His performance virtually guarantees him a lucrative payday from whichever team he signs with during the offseason.

Friday, June 14th, 2120: Shimizu Guns Downs 17 Suns
Hartford Whalers starting pitcher Sadao Shimizu brought his best stuff to the game against the Jacksonville Suns today, striking out 17 batters in his club's 10-0 victory. In a strong performance, the 28-year-old Shimizu gave up 3 hits in his 8 innings of work and issued no walks.

"I felt good out there," he commented after the game. "My fastball had a lot of life and my off-speed stuff was sharp. That combination was giving hitters fits and working well for me."

So far this season Shimizu has compiled a 9-0 record with a 1.91 ERA.

Tuesday, June 18th, 2120: Montoya Hittin' on All Cylinders
"It's too bad I can't do that every day," Alfredo Montoya said with a smile to reporters after today's game. "It would do wonders for my batting average." Montoya had every right to be in a good mood after hitting for the cycle today against Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field. The Whalers won the ballgame 6-2, he hit for the cycle, had a 4-for-5 game and boosted his batting average up a few points. The 35-year-old Hartford catcher chalked up 2 runs batted in and 2 runs scored for the game, too.

Who says you can't have it all?

He told the press that a triple is the tough hit to get in a cycle. "As soon as it left the bat, guys jumped off the bench and were rooting hard for me to have enough gas to get there," Montoya said. "It was hard to enjoy it... I was breathing too hard... you got to really be in shape to run out a triple."

A. Montoya doubled in the 1st, grounded out in the 3rd, hit an RBI triple in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off T. Ito in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

So far this season, Montoya has recorded a .279 batting average with 62 hits, 11 home runs, 38 RBIs, 43 runs scored and a .377 OBP.

The Whalers are now 51-18, the Rays are 39-30.

Monday, July 1st, 2120: Kirby NL Outstanding Batter of the Month
To survive in the bigs, you've got to be a scrapper like Mike Kirby. It never pays to take a day off from the batting cages or to shrug off the advice of the hitting coach. It all paid off today as New York's first baseman pinned down the National League Batter of the Month trophy today.

He hit .450 in June collecting 13 home runs, 30 RBIs and 35 runs scored.

This year Kirby is batting .370 with 26 home runs and 68 RBIs. In 79 games he has scored 72 times.

Monday, July 1st, 2120: AL Honors Wooten, #1 Batter in June
Mike Wooten of the Rays hit .418 in June with 9 home runs, 25 RBIs and 34 runs scored to capture a majority of votes for the American League Batter of the Month trophy.

The 42-year-old is in the last year of his contract and will undoubtedly use these numbers to try and bring in a huge pay raise.

This year Wooten has batted at a .372 pace with 97 hits, 26 home runs, 58 RBIs and scored 77 times.

Monday, July 1st, 2120: Whalers Shimizu Named AL's Best Pitcher

Over the season Shimizu has thrown 113.2 innings and dished out 140 strikeouts with a 11-0 mark and a 1.98 ERA.

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2120: Morales Swats #500
Florida left fielder Fernando Morales blasted himself into an elite group of baseball players. Today he joined the exclusive 500 home run club in the Marlins 8-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

"As soon as I hit it, I knew it was gone. I was happy to move on. Now I can go and have some fun. It is a weight lifted off my shoulders," Morales told the press. He admitted just how much pressure he had been feeling. "Especially every time you'd get out of the hotel, everybody would say, 'Hey, when are you going to hit it?'"

In his milestone game, Morales went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.

Morales has a lifetime .268 average with 1782 hits, 221 doubles, 39 triples, 500 home runs and 1354 RBIs to date.
