SP Sandy Koufax: Contract Signed: I really hoped that this day would be coming soon. You hit one out of the park with this $24,710,000-a-year deal. I'm not going to say negotiation was easy--it's always rocky when you get right down to it--but I'm very relieved that I'll be staying put.

Hit Streak Now at 25 for Vaughan: Win or lose, Arky Vaughan just keeps on getting base hits -- game after game after game. He picked up 1 more today and has now stretched his hitting streak to 25 games. The Temple Owls shortstop went 1-for-4 today, but it wasn't enough to win the game. His club was defeated 13-5 by the Colorado Buffaloes at Owls Park. "It's amazing to watch him hit right now, but I don't think anybody's really mentioning it," one of his teammates said. "We just don't want to jinx him." Arky Vaughan struck out in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, struck out in the 5th and flied out in the 7th. Presently Vaughan is hitting .471 with 4 home runs and 11 RBIs. He has played in 23 games and scored 25 times. |

Donovan Whiffs 20, Montana State Tops UC Davis: Everything was working for Bill Donovan today at Bozeman Ballpark. He had the perfect delivery. The ball was moving. The fastball was working. In an unforgettable performance, the 24-year-old Donovan fanned 20 Aggies and sparked the Montana State Bobcats to a 7-1 victory over UC Davis. He left Aggies hitters mumbling and muttering at the plate. And when he needed a strikeout, he got it. "I don't know if there are many times that I've seen him throw better," said Montana State manager Nick Miller. "His location and command were really something." In addition to collecting 20 strikeouts over 9 innings, Donovan allowed 4 hits and 1 walk in a superlative outing. "I thought I'd make it easy on the guys today," Donovan said with a smile. For the year Donovan has a 3-0 record with a 1.66 ERA in 6 starts. |

Justin Greathouse Hits #400: Kentucky Wildcats slugging second baseman Justin Greathouse swatted his way to the 400 home run mark today as the Wildcats fell to the Old Dominion 7-6. For his part, Greathouse chipped in 2 runs batted in, scored 2 runs and collected 2 hits in 5 at-bats, but it was not enough to turn the tide. "It was a special day for Justin," the team publicist said afterward. "He was disappointed at the result, but everyone was all smiles as he crossed home plate. We're proud of him." Greathouse is hitting the ball at a .236 clip over his career. In 1209 games he has delivered 1009 hits, 400 home runs with 921 RBIs and scored 824 times. |

Tigers End Vaughan's Streak: Arky Vaughan, shortstop for the Temple Owls, gave it a good try, but his time chasing history came to an end when he went hitless in 3 tries against the Clemson Tigers today. Not only did the Tigers break his 29-game hitting streak, they also beat Temple by the score of 2-0. "Now that the streak has ended, I can admit I'll breathe a bit easier the next time I step up to bat," Vaughan said, speaking with the media after the game. "It was tough because I put a little pressure on myself. Now that it's over, I will definitely be a little bit looser at the plate." So far this year Vaughan is hitting .456 with 4 home runs. |

"These guys are playing their butts off," said Cain. "I don't know how long it will last but I hope our fans are enjoying it because we sure are." |

Louisville and Utah will be glad their series is over....
![]() 5/14/27 League Suspends Pirela and Santana for Brawl: If there wasn't a history between Jose Pirela of Utah and Johan Santana of Louisville, then there is one now. League Gives Abbott Suspension: Northwestern's Kurt Abbott has been given a 2-game suspension for his outburst following an ejection in a recent game with the Arizona State Sun Devils at Rocky Miller Park. He was called out on a third strike by the plate umpire and halted the game to argue about it. The disgusted Abbott slowly walked back to the dugout with bat in hand, but suddenly turned around and headed toward the umpire. He was stopped by the on-deck hitter and third base coach as his manager continued to argue the call. A moment later, Abbott was ejected. Looking at his stats this year, Abbott has compiled a .267 batting average, while hitting 17 home runs and driving in 40 runs. He has played in 55 games and scored 35 runs. |

Appalachian State Skipper Oates Blasts Media Over Bad Press: Mountaineers manager, Samuel Oates, had some choice words for the Appalachian State media today. "Whatever happened to journalistic integrity?" the Mountaineers skipper asked during a live radio interview. "No one cares about reporting the facts anymore. It's all about sensationalism these days. All you guys care about is selling newspapers and driving up ratings. And I'm getting pretty damn sick of it." Oates seemed to be referring to recent stories that have suggested the Mountaineers struggles as of late have been the result of off-field distractions. One article, which accuses Jackson Stephens of numerous "extracurricular indiscretions", has been a particularly sore subject for Oates. "What players do on their own time is their business, but to imply that any of my players aren't giving it their all on the field is absolutely ridiculous," Oates said, "and to make these kinds of accusations against someone without any proof is just plain irresponsible!" Team officials had no comment when asked about Oates's remarks. |

Friars Halt Thompson's Hit Streak: The 27-game hitting streak is over. Colorado Buffaloes right fielder Sam Thompson failed to get a hit today against the Providence Friars and had his consecutive-game hitting streak broken. The 28-year-old went 0-for-3 in his club's 9-0 victory over the Friars at Boulder Ballpark. "I think I only made it to 27 games because I got lucky once or twice," he said. "So I guess I can't complain too much that I got unlucky and broke the streak." This season Thompson has banged out 111 hits in 294 at-bats for a .378 average with 14 home runs. He is getting on base at a .469 pace and his totals also include 52 RBIs and 62 runs scored. |
