2. It's possible to be a sports fan without knowing about a football player. What if I like every sport but football?

Now, who should it really be? Armstrong is great, but we can't keep giving it to him every year. Phelps does have the DUI. How about Curt Schilling? I don't like this team business either, I wonder why they put the whole Red Sox team on there instead of just him. If you're talking best individual player on the list, it has to be Federer. EDIT: And because the choices sucked so bad, I didn't even vote. I mean, come on, Ichiro?!?

gets it. After all, LLN and I are from Canada, where there is less interest in football than there is in the US. Also, there is also much less interest, or agreement rather, with Americans going to war in Iraq. Granted, I do know who Pat Tillman is, and what happened, but that was from a thread on this board. I probably would never have found out otherwise. It was indeed terrible what happened to Pat Tillman, and I am sure he was a very honourable man, and very strong in his convictions, but I don't necessarily agree with what he chose to do, even if it did involve giving up millions of dollars. |

No offense, but Tillman would probably be the last person on that list I would vote for.

I actually voted for Phelps. By accident. I probably would've voted for Federer, since Bonds wasn't on the list, and the Red Sox, while perhaps deserving, are not one sportsperson.

Tillman would be a better canidate for Time magazines man of the year.
As for this poll, I voted for Ichiro. Federer would of been another good choice. Bonds should be in the poll. But then again, he could of won it four years in a row by now. |

As for not knowing about Tillman, I tried to buy a poster of him for a friend back in May but I couldn't find one. I looked all over a large mall and most of the time when I asked for his poster in a store....nobody knew who he was. Go figure.

I wouldn't vote Tillman. I know what he did can be viewed as heroic by some, but not me. Plus, many other people did the same thing as he did. Anyway, my vote would go to Vladimir Putin. Someone on some message board suggested Ken Jennings.

Well, the American president makes the news all the time, everywhere.

As for who might win that this year... Didn't "the American soldier" win last year? That would seem to preclude Tillman or anyone else in that vein. Bush won in 2001, wasn't it? Though he was in the news a lot, besides winning the election it is arguable Bush did much compelling this year. Kerry might have been in the news even more considering the primaries, but then he was even less compelling, by about 3.5% I think it was. Why Putin? It may not be a true criterion, though I figure it is - personally I don't feel he has done much this year that Americans can feel directly impacts them. I'd think Karzai or Allawi would have more of a chance, but I doubt either of them would get it either. The hot thing right now out of the election seems to still be "moral values", but I cannot think of one face to really represent that. Perhaps Jon Stewart? I think we are far enough from 9/11 and invading Iraq something not completely somber or serious could get the nod from Time. I doubt they would go sports (this is the Talk Sports forum though, so I gotta keep it relevant), but Phelps might have had a shot with it being an Olympic year until his incident, and Armstrong may be a possibility with the bracelets on top of winning the Tour de France again. Seems like a year for it to go to an innovative businessman or someone like that who is influential but not very well-known by most of the public. |

Wouldn't Phelps getting caught DUI increase his chances of getting the Person of the Year award?
Putin was elected earlier this year under nebulous circumstances. The more scared journalists are afraid of a return to a dictatorship in Russia, which isn't completely far-fetched. He's also involved in the current crisis in Ukraine, and there is still the Chechnya problem. Really, I can't think of anyone else I would vote for. Again, there's Bush, but what has he done more than in preceding years to deserve that award?

That aside, I voted for Ichiro. He destroyed a record, and never ran his mouth while doing so. |

Well, it could be argued that Putin did something good. But still, that doesn't matter. Why would the person of the year have to have done something good? To me, the person of the year is the one who has made the biggest impact on the world on any given year. Of course, there needs to be something preventing the American administration from winning it every year, but I think that 2004 was an important year in Putin's career, and for the world in general.
