Great Hitting Pitchers
While playing out a game in a current era league (2005), I noticed that Brandon Duckworth has had an excellent year as a hitter. In 14 games he is hitting .393 (11 for 28) with 2 doubles. I wonder if anyone else has ever seen a pitcher hit this well before.

I have a pitcher on my fictional team who is hitting over .300 with 11 RBIs in mid-June. He has had a 10-game hitting streak in his career. His career average is .284, with an OPS of .660.

Good question turned around a bit - how about pitchers that were/are good hitters - how did they turn out in various leagues?
Guys like Steve Carlton, Tom Glavine, Mike Hampton (was it just Coors?)...

In the online league MLB1966, Rick Wise (SP) has been a .300 hitter for most of his career. He has 6 ratings for getting hits. I've noticed that he has turned out to be a 15-20 game winner for abot 6 or 7 seasons now without having super ratings for that era.

Don Drysdale?
I remember him being used quite often as pinch hitter when I was a kid.

Fernando Valenzeula was a good hitter...Jim Kaat another decent hitter I think. I remember Lasorda pinch hitting with Fernando.

Lefty O'Doul in 1919, if you import him as a rookie he is a MR, but if you move him to OF(has a rating) he has a brilliant in hits. The Hits V RHP goes up to 10, while the LHP only about 6, so he only played against RHP. His career average was like .450, made me restart the damn league

I've noticed that if a pitcher is hot pitching wise, he also tends to be hot hitting wise.

Ps
Wasn't just Coors for Hampton...from '93-2000, Hampton had the best BA (.221) of any pitcher with 175+ at-bats (he had 299). That's 42 starting pitchers. He also had the best OBP (.292) and was 2nd in slugging (.278) to Steve Avery (.296).
Not good numbers, but better than his position dictates. |

I own Valenzuela's first foul ball
![]() I've had a couple of years with Javier Vazquez hitting over .300... I think 3 in a row.

Walter Johnson was a descent hitter, and still holds the record for Batting Average for a pitcher in a season (.433 in 1925).
