Any of you guys actually seen a veteran improve like a prospect?
I haven't -- until today that is. I was simming my solo league to test homerun totals and get them right, and Randy Johnson went 17-6 with a 2.94 ERA.. okay, it's possible, I mean, he is The Big Unit. But then, it's 8/11/05 (image below) and this is how he's doing.
Anyway, I'm using CBLCardinals roster set, didn't touch him in any way, and that's what he ended up becoming in 2005. Wazzuh. 23-0 in August? He just doesn't quit.

That's a good thing

I once started a historical sim with a 31 year old reliever named Jim Stickland (mid-70's). Strickland was AA/AAA material (a 1-1.5 star guy) as my dynasty game started, but his ratings across consistently shot up for about a year until he was a solid 4-star (gold) pitcher, and my main lefty out of the pen. So yes, old guys can and sometimes do improve in OOTP.

I had a guy follow a Barry Bonds-like career path, but a little more extreme. In his early and mid 20s he was a platoon player. He eventually won a starting job, regularly hitting in the .270 range with 20-28 homers until he was around 35. Suddenly, he unloaded something like 48 homers and hit .320. It was uphill from there. He won the next 4 MVP awards and was going strong until he hit a sudden decline at age 42. I think that has only happened once in my OOTP6 leagues.

I can't remember something like that happening to a batter, but pitchers, especially relievers, tend to have improvements from time to time even after age 35.

Alan Embree has been lights out so far in my season. I play as the Rockies and I signed him to a one year deal for the 2005 season. Only rated as a 2-star MR but at the All-Star break he has an ERA of 0.38 and has only given up 7 hits in 30+ innings of work while piling up 47 strikeouts with only 3 BB. And he has yet to give up a hit to a lefty.

Darrel Sin in the LBA improved quite a bit at age 30. He had talent and ratings increases.
Cato Page: http://lba.ootp-leagues.com/database...darrel655.html I can't remember the actual ratings before and after but the stats are in line with the ratings pretty much for this guy.

I don't know if this guy fits the mold of what you're asking about, but I had a guy blossom when he turned 31 in to a pretty good hitter.
Some background on the guy. He was originally my 1st round pick, 12th overall a few years back. He came in with great stats, but never seemed to progress past A ball. I drafted him as an 18 year old, and he spent 6 years in A ball, never getting a ratings bump and never progressing. A couple more years pass and he no longer has a blue star rating. He turns 26 and obviously turns in to a gold star player (1 star). I decided to move him up to AAA because I do that with all gold star players, so he sat in AAA for 2 years, never really improving his ratings (I think he got maybe a bump in power, but nothing significant. Maybe going from a 41 to a 55 over his entire 10 year minor league career). So finally, I had a lot of FA's on my big club, and decided not to resign a few and rebuild, so I brought him up as my platoon at 2b. The first year, he hit solidly. Around .280 with 7 homers and 45 rbi as the lefty part of the platoon. For two more seasons (until age 31), he batted in the .260 to .280 range and hit 5-9 homers playing the platoon. But then at age 31, he got a big bump in ratings, going from 41-55-27 to 46-65-27, and since I was still in rebuilding mode and didn't want to spend cash on a FA 2b, I gave him full time duty. He hit .276 with 22 homers and 79 rbi as a full time player. And now, at age 32, his ratings are up to 57-75-34 and in late July (about 120 games in), he's leading the league in rbi and is third in homeruns with 111 rbi and 36 homers. All in all, not bad for a guy who looked to be a bust.

In the CIBL (80's historical league) using OOTP 5 Bake McBride at the age of 34 got huge talent increases and now a year later (at 35) is still getting rating increases. The following is his development - the talent increase and the rating increases:
Mcbride is 34 years old 10/9/1983 Bake Mcbride increases his Average Talent from Good to Brilliant. Bake Mcbride increases his Home Runs Talent from Fair to Average. Bake Mcbride increases his Walks Talent from Fair to Average. Bake Mcbride increases his Strikeouts Talent from Good to Brilliant. 10/27/1983 Bake Mcbride increases his Overall Average from 6 to 7. Mcbride turns 35 years old. 4/16/1984 Bake Mcbride increases his Strikeouts vs Righties from 7 to 8. 4/23/1984 Bake Mcbride increases his Overall Strikeouts from 7 to 8. Bake Mcbride increases his Average vs Lefties from 6 to 7. 4/30/1984 Bake Mcbride increases his Overall Walks from 2 to 3. Bake Mcbride increases his Average vs Righties from 7 to 8. Bake Mcbride increases his Walks vs Righties from 2 to 3. Bake Mcbride increases his Strikeouts vs Lefties from 7 to 8. 5/15/1984 Bake Mcbride increases his Overall Average from 7 to 8. 5/22/1984 Bake Mcbride increases his Walks vs Lefties from 2 to 3. 6/7/1984 Bake Mcbride increases his Overall Home Runs from 2 to 3. Bake Mcbride increases his Home Runs vs Righties from 2 to 3. Pretty amazing, I'm not sure how long his rating increases will go. |

I had a 5 year vet named Algie McBride get released by the Giants and picked up by the Pirates...he went on to hit .370 7 Hrs and 88 rbis to win the NL MVP...weird but I liked it...I never saw a guy with 5 or more years of service suddenly pop out a year like this...

Yeh, I cut and paste from the BOSI report. It is in an online league - CIBL. In fact were mid-year 1984, so the saga is ongoing. He is up for free agency at 35 and asking a bundle of cash.

For the most part I've only seen it in under 28 guys, but an occasional veteran who goes from starter to All-Star or platoon to starter.
