Poor cavs, they get screwed over for being nice guys. They had a verbal agreement with Carlos Boozer that they would opt out of the 3rd year of his contract and then resign him at the mid level exception. Then he goes out and signs an offer sheet with the Jazz for over 11 mil per(6 years, $68 mil). This is both bad luck on the cavs part and horrible dealings on Boozer and his agents end.

Horrible dealings on Boozer's end? It's called getting a better offer. Verbal agreements aren't worth the paper they're printed on. It is an employee's responsibility to look out for him/herself and family first, and the company a distant second. The days of blind loyalty are gone. I do agree that it stinks for the Cavs, but they should have gotten something binding in writing.

I'm kinda torn on this one. On one end, it absolutely was a bad idea for the Cavs, though I can see why they would do it. On the other hand, I can see why Boozer would void the verbal agreement, I would have a hard time turning down Utah's offer. At the same time, I find it an almost despicable thing to do, being that the only reason Cleveland voided the third year was that they had a verbal agreement.

The reason the cavs didn't get it in writing is because the mid level exception hasn't been set yet.

Boozer's a tool. I was pretty much indifferent on this originally, and was in agreement that Cleveland was pretty dumb to allow this to happen. Then I read this article that said the handshake offer was Boozer's idea.

"I want to be in Cleveland, I want to be with the Cavaliers," Boozer told the the Associated Press last week on the day he became a free agent. "Now it's up to my agent and the Cavs to work things out."

But it appears Pelinka and Boozer began talking with other teams with salary-cap room over the holiday weekend, with the intention of getting a better deal they knew the Cavaliers probably couldn't match. The Jazz, who started the summer with $30 million in cap space, presumably made the richest offer. Boozer and Pelinka did not return telephone or e-mail messages Thursday.

Okay, I need to modify my opinion as well. I assumed the verbal agreement had been floated by the Cavs and that Boozer was just happy to go along with it. He is a tool. Thanks for providing 'the rest of the story'.

He's only only #6 in field goal percentage because he won't shoot from more than 5 feet away from the basket. The last stat means nothing.

Now if the Cavs had said to a player, "Let's tear up your current contract because we wanna do right by you and give you a longterm deal," then turn around and cut the guy to get him off the books, we would all be saying what horrible swine the owners and front office of the team are and I guarantee you the union would have been all over it.

I guess it makes for a good lesson learned in all professional sports. Players who complain about teams not going out of their way to help a guy out have to shut the hell up now because it's open season on an anything goes approach. The owners have been guilty of it in the past, now individual players show they are just as capable of being A-holes. Any team caugth by something like this from now on is just plain stupid. It is in team's best interest to be D-heads at all times.

what a #####...I'd like the Cavs chances better with or without Boozer this year of getting to the playoffs. Obviously one would prefer with, but he just totally ended that plan by backstabbing the team that drafted him when he was lucky to be picked at the time.
