Reliever to Starter
In my solo league, one of the computer-driven teams--Miami--lost a starting pitcher for the season. First, they called up a AAA starting pitcher to replace him. But a day later, they sent this guy back to the minor leagues, called up a AAA reliever, and converted one of the major league relievers to a starter. I don't mean just putting him in the starting rotation; I mean toggling from middle reliever to starter.
I guess I had some recollection that this wasn't kosher--that I wasn't supposed to be able to turn my flock of four-and-a-half star relievers into starters when it suited me. (My impression has always been that there are more "high star" middle relievers than starters out there.) Anyone have any thoughts on this? |

My first guess is that the pitcher has some duration rating as a starter. If not, the AI would not convert him. Hopefully that's the case.

With one stop fatigue shopping I have no problem with this. If the guy converted has a low fatigue rating, oh well, it's a management decision. I don't think V6 really allows any advantage to doing this. The new fatigue rating evens this out.

Good point, KB. hadn't realized that this was changed. In fact, he only made it four innings in his first start...

The star system is a seperate ranking for each position. A 4 1/2 reliever is probally only going to be a 2 1/2 starter anyways. So yeah change em.

Why not turn a reliever into a starter? As long as you don't use the editor to juice up the pitcher's endurance, that's just a management decision.

Okay, I'm reassured. I was recollecting--perhaps incorrectly--that under previous versions of OOTP, this could give one an unfair advantage. But, if it does not, then I'm with MD: Why not?
BTW, the converted reliever through six shutout innings in his next start... |

I think some online leagues have made rules about doing this, which places limitations on when and how often you can do this. I am not sure why they have created these rules, though.

Look, if a guy has an endurance that's reasonably high enough for him to start, and some team is short on SP and long on MR and you aren't changing any ratings, then why not let them change him from MR to SP? I'm as hard on cheating as you can possibly be, but that's not cheating, that's just changing a pitcher's assignment just like a real team would under similar circumstances even if OOTP makes you have to use the editor to do it.
Hmm..maybe we could change classifications of pitchers in the "Pitching Staff" screen in future versions and not have to use the editor...

Look, the problem comes in if you sign an extension with the MR toggle on rather than the starter tag. Starters demand more money. In previous versions some commissioners banned players from changing pitchers because it was a way to get a starting rotation while paying middle reliever prices.
I'm not sure if this problem exists in V6 or not. |

Now that I have checked, he was 3.5 stars as a reliever; is 2.5 stars as a starter. He had given up 5 earned runs in 5.33 innings as a reliever; but only 4 in 21 innings in four stars (4IP, 6IP, 5IP, 6IP). Two wins and two POGs, too. Seems reasonable enough. A couple of years ago, I did put a reliever into my starting rotation when injuries hit. He even won Pitcher of the Month one month (lots of five and six-inning starts). I did not edit his position, however. But I'll certainly do in the next time around...
