Stupid GM's..what do they know

So my starting pitcher took a while to develop, got some rating bumps and ended up a ***** player after being drafted #28 overall out of college.

He ended up going to 6 All Star games, won 1 World Series ring and won 5 Cy Youngs, including 4 in a row.

His final year (he is 37) saw him go 22-9 with a 3.26 ERA and win the Cy Young (4th in a row). I still had one year on my contract but when I hit the "Advance to Next Season" I got the dreaded "You are Retired" notice.

How does that happen? He still has an 89 in stuff, 88 in control, 42 in velocity (only had a 50 at max) and a 60 in poise. The ability was still there, and he did not suffer a CEI so I'm at a loss to figure out why he retired.

Any ideas? At 234 career wins, and a 94-31 record over the last four seasons, I was hoping for a couple more good years to get near 300.

It's all random I believe. Just like in real life, you have players who want to go out on top and not end their hall-of-fame career going 2-7 with a 7.00 era; yes, chances are your player could have even had another 20 win season but maybe he "felt" tired of it all and the nagging injuries he wouldn't tell the trainer about finally caught up to him.

Trust me, first time it happened to me it was with a pitcher as well and I was ticked. 298 wins and ratings were still decent (a little lower than yours) but surely he could win 2 stinking games. No chance.

On the flip side, I have had guys not want to retire who are signed with a crappy team and keep on playing. I signed a 5 year contract with the Twins at age 39 (second baseman) and he was the only one on the team in that position. By the time his career ended he was batting below the Mendoza line and commited 40 errors but he was still a starter. I was praying for him to retire about 2 years into the contract but he made it through the whole damn thing and still went to free agency (no offers, thank god).

You should be able to search around for a job for 1-2 years after being released unless you had a career ending injury.

this is just plain wrong.

*we* are supposed to be the player. *we* should determine when the player retires. the net result of this type of stuff is that we are just more closely watching a regualr computer-generated player instead of actually *being* that player. a failure on that level, for sure.

I had the opposite problem. I was released by my team after hitting nearly 800 homers as a 3B. I hit like .300 with 28 homers my last season playing. A few weeks into the next season, I was released and no team wanted anything to do with me even though my ratings were around 50 across the board, I was a 3B, and was willing to play for the minimum.

Wouldnt SOMEONE pick me up?

Regardless of age, you'd think someone might be desperate enough for a 3B, even for the bench, given how well he played the year before. Unless of course it's a small league then the talent pool might be too good.
