First of all, I watched a ton of Pac-10 football games this year. My roommate went to UCLA and is a huge fan, and we got ESPN Gameplan just so we could watch Pac-10 games. I like the Pac-10. I watched exactly ZERO ACC conference games this year, although I did walk from the law school to Wallace Wade stadium to watch Florida State obliterate the Blue Devils (I was hoping to see a team score 100 points and was seriously let down). I'm just saying that he disputed that Cal was bad in one thread then called them bad in another. Not cool! I'm a Big Ten guy, anyway...I'm not into the whole East Coast bias. I have to suffer East Coast bias AND West Coast bias, because I root for teams (Minnesota, Michigan) in the middle of nowhere. |

Sorry about that. I too am a Big 10 fan (Go Blue), but college sports is treated in such a different way out on the West Coast than it is anywhere else. Just watch an episode of ESPN: The Season involving a college program and you will see how Big 12 teams or ACC or any non-west coast conference teams have the whole state involved with the team. Almost like the Packers in the NFL. This to me is why folks in these areas only focus on their teams and could attribute the the "east coast bias". Maybe it's just a CA thing because I for one know that the SF Bay Area could care less about its local college sports.

We are talkign about talent not how god damned involved in a team their fans are, and you know nothing of what it is to be a Football fan in the Pac-10, atleast int he Pacific NW. Fans take the CFootball season very very, seriously, atleast the Ducks, beavers, Cougars and Huskies. Thats all I know about is them, I dunno about the Cali teams, but I would think its the same way down there.

A playoff system in college football is too difficult. We already know this. I think they should just go back to the old system. Drop the BCS and just go by the AP and Coaches Poll. If the AP and Coaches disagree on a champion then we shall have co-champs. *Perhaps, maybe the NCAA could consider a way to set-up an extra Bow Game titled the AP/Coaches Bowl (or something) that would pit the two teams that finished number one in both polls. Maybe. |

This option is so simple, and so obvious, that I think it's a cinch that it will never happen. The BCS has made New Year's Day basically meaningless. People care about one bowl per year, plus the bowl(s) their team(s) are in. Why not make the bowl games an essential part of the BCS? Why not have teams audition for the national championship by kicking a$$ in a bowl game? You want to be national champs? Take care of business against one of the elite teams in the nation, and put them back on New Year's Day. Let it be the Four Chosen Bowls if you like. Out of these eight teams, the national championship matchup will be chosen. Those teams will play in mid-January for all the marbles. It is flawless. It is compelling. It will make many many dollars for everyone and add a new bowl which will make many many more. I guess it's just too easy. |

People are dumb. This is what your post has taught me. If we're talking about talent, why do you criticize me for not knowing what it takes to be a fan? That doesn't make any sense. I know about talent, as I watched the games all year. Oh, and I love that you can criticize me for "knowing nothing" and then admit you know nothing about what I'M talking about. You are an enigma, BarryUSBonds. A self-contradictory enigma who needs to finish junior high then come back to the board. |

From what I've heard the BCS design was supposed to take the 'human element' of the polls and drastically reduce it so things like late losses vs early losses and emotional victories would have less of an effect when deciding the top two teams in the land.
It did just that, and now people are complaining anyway. I don't really have anything else to add, other than a shout out to DrP in Durham. I'm looking forward to the State/Duke basketball games even though we'll get stomped.

As for the BCS. I think it is better than just Human Polls, but Polls are not the answer.

Every major sport in college and the pros have a playoff to decide the national champion except NCAA Division 1-A Football. Why is this? Because people are emotional over their bowls. I went to Michigan State, i like the Big Ten and the Rose Bowl, but I would be more then happy to see it all go away for a reasonable playoff system.
Here is my silly playoff system: Take the top 25 teams (determined by the BCS computer) The top seven teams get a bye. Round One - teams 8-25 play (18 games, 9 winners) Round Two - teams 1-7 play against the winners of 8-25 (16 games, 8 winners) - Round Three - 8 games, 4 winners Round Four - 4 games, 2 winners Round Five - National Championship Game If Gonzaga can go to the final four in hoops, why not TCU in football? A school from a minor conference would have to win 5 games against top schools to win the championship. If they can do that, I say they deserve it. To make this work, I would put in other changes. All teams must play exactly 12 games and one bye week. An example of this years schedule would look like this: Michigan State Sept 4 -- Western Michigan Sept 11 -- Louisiana Tech Sept 18 -- Notre Dame Sept 27 -- Bye Oct 4 -- Iowa Oct 11 -- Indiana Oct 18 -- Illinois Oct 25 -- Minnesota Nov 1 -- Michigan Nov 8 -- Ohio State Nov 15 -- Wisconsin Nov 22 -- Another Conference game or Conference Championship Nov 29 -- Round One Playoffs Dec 6 -- Round Two Playoffs Dec 13 -- Round Three Playoffs Dec 20 -- Round Four Playoffs Jan 1 -- National Championship Game The playoffs games would be played where the bowl games are played now. You could alternate the national championship game between the four major bowls just like you do now. I dont want to hear about how they cant do this because of classes, cause that is crap. Half of these players are not there for class anyways, and division 1-aa playoffs went until dec 19th. |
