1931 Red Sox catchers

Scrutinising the image very closely to find the 2 leading catchers on the 31 Red Sox, Charlie Berry and Muddy Ruel. The best locations I could find are for Charlie Berry next to MacFayden on his left, 2nd row from the bottom 6th from left. Muddy Ruel on the extreme right of the third row?

Anyone has an idea who the second player wearing glasses could be?

I don't have a very good reference photo, but I think that it is Jud McLaughlin on the left hand end of the 1st row. It also appears to me to be Jim Brillheart 3rd from the left in the 1st row.

Here possibly is an upgrade in respect of Jud McLaughlin from the cinemaodyssey facepack which is highly recommended.

Thanks Dto7 for the invaluable Spring Training roster, using that I think next to Muddy Ruel in the third row is coach Rudy Hulswitt. Burns is listed on the Spring Training roster. Could that be veteran First-Baseman George Burns in between Brillheart and the player with his arm on a sling, bat in hand, on the bottom row?

Second row from the top, second from the left looks like Al Van Camp.

1931 Red Sox Outfielders

With significant help from Dto7's post showing the 5 Red Sox rookie outfielders I think the following identifications can be made.

Tom Winsett, tall, middle row sixth from right. Johnny Lucas next to Winsett, fifth from right.

I am tempted to place McSwain in the second row from the top, fourth from left where Oliver has been identified and to re-locate Oliver to the middle row next to Lucas on his left, what do you think?

I think that you are right. I can see that the guy I identified as Oliver is most likely McSwain.

Gene Rye 1931

The best match for the fifth outfielder, Gene Rye, appears to be in the extreme left of the top row.

1878 New Bedford

This team photo has been floating around for awhile but I finally locked down the identifications. They were printed in the 4/18/1920 New Bedford Sunday Standard and are as follows:

Clockwise, From Top: Jim Mutrie, John Piggott, Charlie Reilly, Jake Evans, William Stone, Harry Stovey, George Gore, George Bradley, Charles Davis
Center: Frank Bancroft (Mgr.)

1886 St. Louis Maroons

Over at REI, a photo has popped up of the 1886 St. Louis Maroons club.
https://bid.collectrea.com/lots/164387
There is an existing photo of the club with the players identified at Threads of Our Game (https://www.threadsofourgame.com/). Both photos are shown below (unknown first), with the identification of the players in the second one numbered as they are at the bottom of the photo in the complete image.

This second one is thought to have been taken in May. All players in the photo were with the club at the start of the season. Also with the club in the spring were George Mappes (released May 6) and an outfielder named Howard, released in April. As neither are in the known photo, I would assume that photo was taken of the opening day roster.

Known photo:
1) H. Boyle; 2) A. Bauer; 3) J. Quinn; 4) F. Graves; 5) C. Sweeney; 6) E. Healy; 7) J. Denny; 8) F. Dunlap; 9) E. Seery; 10) G. Myers; 11) T. Dolan; 12) J. Cahill; 13) J. Glasscock; 14) J. Kirby; 15) A. McKinnon
Manager: G. Schmelz (in the center, un-numbered)

The page on Threads of Our Game now includes IDs for the players (and manager) in the newly-found photo, as follows:

Top row, from left: J Cahill, J Denny, J Kirby, T Dolan, and J Quinn. Middle row of five: J Glasscock, F Graves, A McKinnon, E Seery, and G Myers. Front row of four: E Healy, F Dunlap, G Schmelz, and H Boyle. IDs from Carson Lorey.

The players on the club at that time, as best I can tell, were:
Will J Briggs (3b & c) – Bats left – Died before 1909
Dan Hepp (c) – From Louisville, KY; died before 1909
Frank Robinson (1b & 3b)
William (Billy) Nelson (p)
Will Myers (ss)
Al (Cod) Myers (2b)
Anthony (Andy) Gallagher (rf) – Bats left
Tom C Stunkard (lf) – Bats left
Ed (Mit?) McKennan (cf) – Bats left, died Aug 20 1884 at age 27
Major Milner (1b)
I randomly found the identifications for this team, although the year attributed is incorrect. I believe 1883 to be the correct year as discovered by prewinter. The image was produced from a family scrapbook posted to Facebook for a player in the photograph.

The Madden Brothers

The Madden Brothers were nine brothers from Marlboro, Massachusetts, who formed a team and toured in the New England area in the late 1870s. Two of them (that I know of) played professional baseball. John (Jack) Madden played with Lynn, Syracuse, and Rochester in the late 1870s. Frank Madden showed up with Grand Rapids in 1884.

I found this photo on Ancestry.com. It looks like it came from a newspaper, but I haven't been able to track it down. I was wondering if anyone had seen it previously, and if they could point me to its source.

Minor League team photos

I'm the newsletter editor, and unofficial archivist for the SABR Minor Leagues committee. As part of the "archiving", I compile links to minor league team photos, including several that have been posted in this thread.

So, if anyone gets bored and is looking for a team photo to work on, you'll probably find something available on the list.

I have what appears to be the photographic source. Apologies, but I don't remember where I came across it.

Thanks. Do you know which issue of which paper the picture was in?

Thank you for sharing these images. The 1878 Buffalo team photo attached has been depicted in a notable publication, from memory, I think David Nemec's publication on 19th Century baseball. Craig Brown's site , "Threads Of Our Game" is also an invaluable source of team photos and identifications. Identifications attached for the Buffalo image.

The image you have listed as the 1884 St. Paul Saints I have recorded as 1899, inferior copy attached, with identifications.
