When a pitcher is struck by a line drive...

A few things should happen:

1. A check if the pitcher is hurt; if so, to what degree. (I've never seen a pitcher forced out of the game after being hit with a ball.)
2. A greater probability the batter reaches safely. (Never seen a runner *not* thrown out, almost always by the third baseman.)
3. If not injured, at least an acknowledgment from the pxp that he's being checked on by the manager or pitching coach and trainer.
