Lajoie Batters Washington Big Time
The Philadelphia Athletics stopped the Washington Senators by a score of 7-2 at American League Park, with the lion's share of the credit going to second baseman Nap Lajoie. The 28-year-old had a career day, collecting 5 hits.
"Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate," Lajoie said later. "He wants to hit the ball hard."
Lajoie did just that in his 5 at-bats, much to the chagrin of the Senators.
"Not much that I can say," offered Washington manager Jim Manning. "He just hammered the heck out of us."
Nap Lajoie doubled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a two-run single in the 4th, singled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

Series tied 4-4

Game 9, October 12th, 1903, Huntington Avenue Grounds
Americans Top Pirates in World Series
Sometimes the winner is the one who got the lucky bounces and the lucky calls, and sometimes the winner is just the one who played better.
It was the latter case in 1903, as the Boston Americans topped the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1 tonight at Huntington Avenue Grounds to win the World Series. It was the 1st title in franchise history.
"When you play for championships, you have to play better than the team in the other dugout. We did that in this series, and all year. Now, we're the best team in baseball," said Boston shortstop Freddy Parent, who was named series MVP.
The Americans took the series 5-4. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the AL and a 84-56 record.
Boston manager Jimmy Collins grinned and nodded when asked to comment on Parent's words.
"Freddy said it best -- we played better than the other team," the skipper said.
Hometown officials announced they were already planning a "grand celebration" for the winners in the days to come.

April's notable games

April 23rd, 1904

Harvey Hurls No-Hitter
Zaza Harvey of the Chicago White Sox was the King of the Hill at League Park.
The Chicago starter dominated the Cleveland Naps, giving up zero hits in his 1-0 victory.
"The toughest part was the last couple of innings," Harvey recounted after the game. "You know you have a no-hitter going, and so does everybody in the ballpark. That was the hard part, keeping focused and concentrating while your heart is pounding."
Harvey, who finished 5th in the AL in wins with 19 in 1901, recorded 2 strikeouts and 5 walks in the game.
Chicago White Sox (6-2) over Cleveland Naps (4-5)

Chesbro Razzle-Dazzles with No-Hitter
The Pittsburgh Pirates relied on no-hit stuff from starter Jack Chesbro to defeat the Cincinnati Reds, 2-0, at Palace of the Fans.
"It's quite a thrill," Chesbro told the media afterward. "This is a top-notch league. A no-hitter against any team in the league is something special. I can't believe I did it."
To get his name logged in the NL records, he stopped Cincinnati cold and hitless, surrendering 2 walks and fanning 1 of the 31 batters he faced.
Pittsburgh manager Fred Clarke was in a jovial mode after the game, kidding with reporters that Chesbro "made managing easy today."
"I didn't have hardly any decisions to make like I usually do," he said. "I didn't even have to come up with a pinch hitter."
Pittsburgh Pirates (9-1) over Cincinnati Reds (1-10)

Athletics Resilient in 7-6 Win Over New York
The Philadelphia Athletics cut down the New York Highlanders by the score of 7-6 in 13 innings. Much of the credit went to right fielder Socks Seybold. Seybold was 5-7 with a triple, a double, and 3 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for the Athletics. The Highlanders fall to 5-7 and continue their lethargic start to the 1904 season.
The knockout blow came in the bottom of the 13th inning. That's when third baseman Emil Batch stepped to the plate with a runner on 2nd and hit a run-scoring single, to win the ballgame.
"The house was rockin'," said Seybold.
