Gameplay Suggestion

First off let me be clear that this is a much much better game than action pc baseball. Having said that, Action pc baseball has a feature that I hope OOTP will incorporate. When a defensive player makes a great or poor play, there is a quick notice that flashes on the screen. I would like OOTP to do something similar. Maybe there can be a feature if we can mouse over the person who made the play or did not make the play that we find out if it was a routine play, a difficult play. That way we can have a better feel of how the defense is affecting the game as we are managing rather than after the fact.

There is a feature called Superstats Replay available in the Options menu during a game (or SHIFT+F10). It replays the last play and has a popup menu with information on the play including the difficulty. The play difficulty is displayed with stars, with 5 stars being the most difficult play.

Yes there is the superstar replay that one can use. Also using "text to speech" a great play will trigger one of your sound files. IE when a great fielding play is made by my Cubs I will get a Harry Caray "Holy Cow". I use shortened pbp so the TTS will match up better with the graphics, so not sure if "full pbp" mentions great fielding plays or not.

And superstar replays actually go to 6 stars, though they are very rare. In almost 2 seasons of played out games this is the only one I've actually seen.

I agree. I play using classic 3D, but I never watch the animations. Having it flash on the field when a great defensive play occurs would be great.

Another thing I really wish the game would do on the field is use the asterisks for all substitutions, not just for pitching changes. If a team makes a defensive sub at SS, put the asterisks around the new SS, so it stands out.

Ha....I never knew about that option, brilliant! Thanks for pointing it out.

Thanks for the info!

This is a great feature that shows off when great plays are made. The next step is to have a notification or a widget that shows when plays should have been made. A ground ball that gets by the shortstop or a fly ball that drops in front of the right fielder. If the play should have been made, but wasn't an error, I would like a way of knowing about it during the game action. I know sometimes its mentioned in the play by play but I would like it to be added to the replay or another way.

I love the play difficulty but I find it frustrating when I get an alert after the game that my player made x amount of 5 star catches or something and I got a medal but have no idea who the player even was because those alerts don't name the player specifically.

But only on the MODERN 3D setting.

Another suggestion from Action PC, I'd add is a list of the schedule. When I wanna just see the straight schedule, I don't wanna have to scroll through a freakin calendar. This has always bugged me. Keep the calendar, but add a listing of the schedule too. That'd be great.

Also, they could learn from Action PC on their ball animation in 2-D. They ball animation here sucks. Even Stratomatic is better.

On my Options menu, during the game, on Mac and PC, I don’t see any option to show a Superstats replay. Could somebody provide a screen shot of what you are seeing? Many thanks.

The play-by-play text provides a lot of good context to indicate when a great defensive play has been made or when a player should have made a play but was hampered by poor range or other factors. It will often mention this explicitly. I've always relied on those indicators, and when they're combined with the 3D animation, you get an even better sense of how players are impacting the game defensively.

On a macro level, as you manage enough games where the same team is involved, you'll clearly see the overall impact of its defensive strengths and weaknesses and how its players' defensive ratings are affecting play results. When you see those same two middle infielders keep turning double plays, or that same left fielder failing to throw out runners at the plate or make throws that are offline, it becomes obvious.

Reading all these post makes me yearn for the good ole days of me playing year after year of a career. Definitely going back to what back OOTP was made for when new edition comes out. I also played out every game too. Been a baseball junkie since 1972 at 12 years old. Might can tell from my Bill Melton card

That's the only way I've played baseball sims, dating back to 1984. With the exception of two or three brief instances I can recall, I only do GM-only sims for beta testing, to test settings changes, or to help troubleshoot issues that other people are having.

When you play out and manage your games, the fun factor increases exponentially, and you get a much better understanding of how the sim works and how results are being generated. I use the one-pitch mode to expedite play, so I can complete an entire season in a matter of days. Sometimes, when my team is on defense, I also use the option to sim until runners are in scoring position, particularly if it's a blowout game or some weaker hitters are due in the lineup. It's a good way to save a minute or two here and there, if you don't mind missing a bit of the action.

That being said, some people just love running sims to see how a league or how history plays out, and they're not interested in being a GM or manager for a given team. That's a different case, and obviously it makes sense to not play out games in that context.
