Releasing players before they execute player options
This precludes you from paying a player millions of dollars after executing their player option. Right now I have a bench player with high greed about to execute a player option for $10mil. If I try to release him the OOTP allows me to do it without spending a penny. There is no way this comports with real baseball.

It should not do that and usually doesn't. However, I have sometimes found there is some small window after the world series and before the flip over to a new season in which OOTP erroneously allows releases without applying the financial implications of the release. I've never been able to narrow it down precisely.

I've never released a player before he opts in or out of an option, figuring if I did I would have to pay him for the following season, meaning, for that reason, I've never had the opportunity to see it.
Couple of questions.. Are you assuming you won't have to pay because the game didn't have a popup warning? (maybe that's all that is missing?) Did you proceed to the offseason to be sure the salary doesn't show up charged as a "Misc. Player Expense" in the accounting report for the next season? I would think if charged it would be for the season it was scheduled for , IE next year? (only speculation on my part). If you know for sure that you aren't going to have to pay the salary.... 1. Report it in the bugs forum so they can find the problem and fix it. 2. Don't take advantage of the bug in your game. Let the player make his decision and live with it. (your choice of course, but what I'd do) |

When exactly are you releasing him? I know (and just confirmed) that if you release them during the season prior to the player option year you have to pay out the option year.
If there is a window where you can dodge that, then that probably is a bug and should be reported as such. |

The only way I could see this working is in the rare instances where both the team and player have options in the same year. For example, in the attached screenshot, you will see CF Cody Bellinger has a player opt out after this season in which he can opt in for one more year at $12 million. But then, the team does also have an option for $12 million as well. If Cody Bellinger opts in to the contract, the team can still opt out making his release free.
