What determines "Catcher couldn't hold foul tip"

I've had a ton of these and they are costing my team a bunch of Ks. Does the C's range determine this? His fielding %?

Good question. I'd like to know the answer, too.

I always assumed it has nothing to do with the catcher, that it's just another way the game "ups" the pitcher's pitch count by adding more foul balls. But maybe I'm wrong ....

I could be wrong but:

If I remember correctly the game determines the result of the play as a foul ball and then selects a line of the play-by-play to give you. It's just a different line in the play-by-play.

In the game its just the play by play and in real life it is based on luck.

I posted this question a while back. It seems that it is just the sim's way of saying, no strikeout right now. The way I picture it is the pitchers' K rating says K, and then the batters' K rating says, hey not so fast.
