contract extension question
i have a couple of good players who are asking for extensions. I made one offer but when i made the second i got the angry owner doesnt approve you are over budget. But its pretty clear that next season when you factor in guys who wont be offered arbitration and will be let go Ill be way under any salary limit that is imposed. Am I missing something and is there any way to get around this? Because the next step is that second player will get mad and wont want to negotiate when i can. Thanks

The owner always looks at worse case scenario of you keep everyone.

Perhaps there is some way to address this in 'commissioner mode' but I wouldn't know about that.
That aside, about the only thing I can think of is to rid yourself now of some the arb-eligible players you don't think you will want to keep. (trade, waivers, taking them off the 40-man roster - and active roster - if they clear waivers, etc.) Of course, if they are of use to you this season, that poses another problem and makes this idea impractical. But just trying to help. |

Players don't get angry if you don't negotiate during the season. They will only get angry if you lowball them too many times. I've been in this situation many times where the current budget for the following season doesn't allow you to offer extensions to soon to be FA's. It's frustrating because if that player has a good year, it increases the money you will have to offer after the season to re-sign him.
But you really can't do anything about it unless you DFA or trade players during the season who have contracts or are arbitration eligible to get you under the budget number to allow you to offer a contract. |
