Player retires, then unretires. Is this normal?

In 1962, I released Joe Gibbon due to what was supposed to be a career ending injury. Gibbon retired. In 1963, Gibbon came back and is playing with another team. No news about it until I play a game where he is pitching against my team. Is this a common occurrence? I find it difficult to believe. Do I need to be careful about releasing players in this situation?

Sounds like he just hated playing for you and used his brain to figure a way out. Good on Joe!

Sounds like a settings issue. Do you have 'retire players according to history' enabled (sorry, don't have a game open in front of me, so wording might be off) along with injuries being enabled? Joe Gibbon's last major-league season was 1972 according to the wonders of the internet.

I suppose so. Playing the early Mets team. I understand why Stengel slept on the bench. It's been brutal.

No. I don't have "retire players according to history" box checked. I will just be careful about releasing players in future situations similar to this. Never had this occur before and hopefully, it won't happen again.

Weird. Do you have real historical transactions enabled? On your screenshot there's no indication he signed with a team but rather just ended up back with Pittsburgh.

No. I don't have historical transactions enabled. And, I agree that there is no indication he resigned with the Pirates. I only discover it when the Pirates played the Mets in August of 1963. It's odd.. Gibbon had a 7.63 era when he retired. With the Pirates, his era is under 3.00. If it happens again, I'll try waivers instead of releasing the player.
