Game one was not good. Not good at all. Collin Ortiz did manage four hits, including a double. Unfortunately, Alvarado allowed 5 earned runs in the first 4 innings, and we didn't score until the seventh in the 6-4 loss. The crazy thing is that nobody really stood out for Philly today. It was just a total team effort. |

The Congress just can't do anything wrong. They appeared to have hung on to Gil Chapman for too long, but the 37-year old veteran is now 7-0 after beating us 3-1. Jason Frey gave us 8 strong innings, and David Robinson gave us 2 hits. It just wasn't enough to overcome Chapman and Freddy Perez going 4 for 4 in the leadoff spot for Philly. |

...and we are 3 1/2 back. Glenn Osborne's shutout completed the sweep for Philadelphia. Nelson Ortiz pitched well in the loss, and Elijah Grievous and Dave Burton each had a pair of hits, but it wasn't enough to keep us from losing 3-0. |

Today we start a series against the Chicago Union. The Union aren't very good this year and are in ninth place. I can remember years ago when they were one of our greatest rivals. That was back when they had great players like Clang Alexander and Hypnotist Dickerson. They aren't at that level anymore. Meanwhile, it's Monday, and that means that the latest AABC weekly awards have been awarded. In the SSL the player of the week is Philadelphia right-handed SP Gil Chapman, who at 37 was 2-0 with 5 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. In the GABL the player of the week was Louisville SS Mike Pearsall, who was 9 for 16 with a HR this week. Sadly, we have fallen to sixth in the latest power rankings. Philadelphia is in first, and the top GABL team, Milwaukee, is in second. |

We won the first game against Chicago. It's good to get off to a good start. We had our ace, Roberto Alvarado, on the bump, and he brought his record to 10-2 by only allowing 2 earned runs in 9 innings in the 11-2 affair. Mike Schrock, who is the leading vote getter to be the third baseman in the All-Star game despite only hitting .223 this year, was the hitting star with his 3 for 4 effort that included his 8th double and his 3rd steal. Franklin Rivera (1-10) was the loser for Chicago, and the 37-year old looks to be on his last legs as an AABC starter. |

What a great game! I can still hear the ringing in my ears from the roar of the crowd after Willie Sanchez hit his walk-off grand slam to give us an 8-4 win in 11 innings over the Union. Willie was 4 for 4 today with 1 HR, 2 BB, and 4 RBI. What a game! Jason Frey pitched all 11, but wasn't great allowing 4 ER. Sean Peter did the same and was even worse for Chicago. |

Willie Sanchez's RBI single in the seventh inning off of Garrett Decker gave us the sweep 3-2 with Nelson Ortiz getting his seventh win against four defeats. Mike Schrock was injured, but he should be day-to-day with minimal damage for the next three days. Now, diary, I need to set you down and board the train to Baltimore. I hope for crab cakes and wins against the Shippers. |

A mixed bag today. Joel "Dinky" Hayes pitched a shutout for Washington. I miss him. I know that we had excess pitching when I traded him. On the other hand, he was really good for us. As for our game, Aaron Hammett beat Baltimore 6-3 with help from 3 Elijah Grievous hits. We are now 2 1/2 games behind the Congress. |

Danny Dunkel is hitting .332 for Providence, but he will be out for the next two weeks. Ouch! We smoked the Shippers 11-2. Dave Burton and Collin Ortiz each had 3 hits. Alvarado allowed 1 ER in 9 innings pitched. He is 11-2. With a Philadelphia loss, we are within 1 1/2 games of first. |

Kevin Ambrosi is out for the next 6-7 weeks for Washington. He is hitting .317, so that will hurt Washington. They are 13 games back of first place Milwaukee in the GABL. They can take hart that Bryan Flack had a 5 for 5 day against Cleveland to bring his average to .341. Wow! Shane Sharpe (.349 average) now has a 20 game hitting streak for the Silversmiths. Meanwhile, we lost against Baltimore 2-1. We just couldn't solve Antonio Salazar. He is only 22-years old and is 9-3 with a 1.96. He is going to be amazing! |

Sharpe's hitting streak ended for Providence against Philadelphia. Meanwhile, we lost against Minneapolis. Sanchez and Ortiz were each 3 for 4 against us. Joe Ormon allowed 1 ER in 9 IP for them to beat us 4-3. Isaiah Dunn was the SSL player of the week. The St Louis pitcher is 8-4 with a 1.60 ERA after going 2-0 with 16 strikeouts this week. Brandon Walker was the GABL player of the week after posting a 0.64 ERA this week. We are now 3.5 games back. |

Taco Tuyls earned his 2000th career hit for Milwaukee. I can still remember when he was the biggest star for Chicago. We beat the Lumberjacks 9-3. Dave Burton had 3 of our 14 hits including his ninth double. Aaron Hammett's win made him 7-4. Cameron Foos was the SSL hitter of the month. He hit .341 with 1 HR this month for St Louis. Graham Hill was the GABL hitter of the month. He hit .382 with 3 HR for the Rebels. Our Roberto Alvarado was the SSL pitcher of the month after posting a 1.49 ERA. Buffalo's Mike Velazquez was the GABL pitcher of the month after going 5-2 with a 1.41 for the month. The rookie of the months were Jeremy Allred from Providence and Jason Perrine from New Orleans. Allred hit .339 while playing first for the Silversmiths, and Perrine had 5 wins and a 2.56 ERA for the Rebels. |

We took 2 of 3 from New York. In game 1 Collin Ortiz was 2 for 4, and Jason Frey allowed 1 earned run in 9 innings. Yet, we lost 2-1 thanks to a Dan Mullen error in the eighth inning. In game 2 we one 8-1. Dane Beck and Mike Schrock were each 3 for 4. Beck is up to .343 for the year. Nelson Ortiz went the distance allowing the 1 run. In game 3 we won 2-1 behind a complete game by Aaron Hammett. We won despite having just 5 hits. Three stolen bases helped. We also had the AABC draft today. There wasn't much to report. The draft pool was very poor this year. I took a starting pitcher in round one, but he is a long-shot to ever amount to much. We are going to have to hope someone surprises. We swept Providence 7-6, 12-4, and 3-1. In game 1 Collin Ortiz was 3 for 4, and Roberto Alvarado pitched 10.2 dominant innings. In game everyone but pitcher Jason Frey had at least one hit. In game 3 Nelson Ortiz did not allow a single earned run. |
