OOTPmods.com update

since I have been quiet I figured I should give an update. I would like to say I have been busy, but it's not quite true. I have been off my face on pain meds. while I was cleaning up from the fallen tree I thought I just hurt my right arm a bit, but it didn't get better so to make a long story short, I have that degenerative disk in my neck thing(c6-7 for those that care) so while this episode calms down I am on the DL with a dead arm... so to speak.

anyway, I am no longer receiving the support for the server that I used to and with everything going on I was looking a cutting costs, while looking at the resources we use and the performance we need/get from our current server I realized we can can get better performance from a good shared-hosting account. While the added benefit of removing server admin duties from my shoulders, I can just focus on managing/promoting the website. I am not a very good server admin so everything took my a long time & I was always fighting with the damn thing. the more I think about it, moving is a positive regardless of the financial considerations, i'll finally have time to work on the projects I want to run through the site.

so if anything is funky the next week, you know why, I'll post an update when I get done

and, I added Korean to the site translator, I have no idea how good it is... but it's there

look into making use of the torrent protocol...

peer-to-peer sharing... if enough people, it will propogate itself. even Blizzard makes use of this when releasing patches to their various games.

that would remove the storage and bandwidth requirements for your site. a simple web page with some links would be all that's needed.

may not be enouhg, but worth a try, even if a short-run test.

I moved the site over successfully as ootphub,com and all is well.

I am pointing the ootpmods.com over to the new site but dns is giving me trouble. while I control ootpmods.com I don't actually own it and that appears to an issue at the moment.

I'll send an email to the owner so he can alter the nameservers on his end and all should be well. assuming he is still around. meanwhile there are a few ways to workaround it, so i'll get it working.

if you have trouble with the add-ons central change ootpmods to ootphub and it works fine.

because of that type of culture with this game, i'm almost certain enough people would share. i don't know cyclical demand... maybe it drops too low at certain points.

as a "peer" you can easily control how much bandwidth may be used. so, it's not obtrusive to the end-user, when setup correctly. recommend / url link to a portable one like utorrent 2.2.1 and post the ini file for settings -- shouldn't violate any gnu license. ~200kb program that's a low profile on resources.

my host is pretty tolerant as long as we are not hogging resources. I will look into it... in may. after the server move is complete I have 2 marketing papers to write, a macroeconomics final to take, and the fallout from the fallen tree to deal with, I am a bit swamped at the moment

ootpmods.com appears to be having issues. everything looks good but it's not hitting my server. I sent a message to the domain name owner asking to change things on his end but we'll see what happens

ootphub.com which is the exact same website, is working fine. just swap ootphub.com for ootpmods.com and all is well.

I think it may be time to fully market the site as ootphub com. me not owning the domain name was always a potential issue without some formal structure in place.

anyway, i'll deal with it and move forward. I ain't got time to cry over spilt milk.

*just received a reply, nameservers are changed. all should be well in a few hours or so

shoot, i just realized you can set it up as a webseed, too... link right to your hosted file or whatever. so, even if there are lulls in the storm, no problem.

plus, if you can save a couple $$$ with less bandwidth requirements, all positives. there's no learning curve, and i've never been an initial seed of a file, ever... but i promise it'll be easy to do with a modicum of computer experience.
