Well, it is 2 days where I am at the moment so I missed putting up Ned, but here is Alcides... I wish YouTube videos or gifs would fit, because the glovework is awesome, but this'll have to do!

EDIT: I see Lefty Gomez slapped it on him for his consistency as a hitter and fielder at 2B. Sounds good to me.

The magic number is 2.
Posting this player and referring to his accomplishments in the past tense makes me feel old.....really, really old. ![]() Derek Sanderson Jeter was simply everything a team could want in terms of on-field performance and off-field persona. He played to win and was an almost perfect role model and leader. In 2011, Fortune Magazine even rated him the 11th greatest leader in the world (That probably says more about the current state of our world than Jeter's actual leadership capabilities, but it's still pretty cool. )As far as the numbers go, statistically he ranks among the greatest shortstops (and Yankees) who ever lived. He's the all-time Yankee leader in hits (3,465), doubles (544), stolen bases (358), AB's (11,195) Games Played (2,747), and Times on Base (4717). He's second all-time in Runs Scored (1923), third in TB (4,921), etc., etc., etc.... Even three years after his retirement, it still feels odd to look over at short on a warm summer afternoon at Yankee Stadium and not see Jeter. Derek Jeter #2

This guy shot through the minor leagues, making it to the bigs in September as a 20 year-old in 2013, and playing a big role in the postseason in bringing the world series back to Boston. It took some time, but over the last two years, he's really developed into the hitter that the scouts saw back in the minors, with a .307 BA, 28 homers, and a decent 108 OPS+. He's been quite impressive, and he doesn't turn 25 until October! I'm looking forward to seeing him continue to play. #2 Xander Bogaerts

Mad props and prayers to the Rem Dawg. Hopefully, he'll be able to beat back cancer again.

This one's gonna sting Rockies' fans. Believe me, I know your pain. I went through it watching Roy "Doc" Halladay, Carlos Delgado, Shawn Green, John Olerud etc etc suit up for other teams. It goes without saying that were he at the threshold of the HoF (and he isn't yet if his career ended today, but I think he will be), he would wear a Rockies cap. In the short time we've had him on our team, we've learned why the Rockies' fanbase was so devastated to lose him. He's a great player with a great head on his shoulders and a work ethic that's off the charts. He not only wants to get better every day himself, he wants every single member of the infield (and most likely the rest of the team) to get better along with him. Absolutely leads by example and we love him for it and we're thrilled to have him. Troy Tulowitzki #2

This guy is nowhere near the player that Tulo has been, but he's loved in these parts. He's had his fair share of ups and downs in his career, but he put his tremendous glovework together with a very solid hitting season in 2009 and was an All-Star for the only time in his career. I say he deserved to be an All-Star in 2007 too, but I'm biased so take it with copious amounts of salt. Aaron Hill #2

One of the most intense and unique personalities to ever appear in baseball, Leo "The Lip" Durocher:

I don't care that someone else already posted Derek Jeter but I need to talk for a moment about my favorite player of all time.
Being 19 years old, Derek Jeter is the player of my childhood. His final season, concluded my childhood. I remember when he dove into the stands against the Red Sox in 2004 and imitating that play by diving over the couch in my family's living room. I remember his 3000th hit by hitting a homerun of David Price. I remember his walk off hit at his final game in Yankee Stadium and crying like a baby over it. (The New York Giants were also playing that night but I decided that this was way more important) Growing up in New York, there wasn't a kid who didn't try to pull off the classic jump throw in the playground, during games, etc. Derek Jeter was the true role model. I can't thank him enough for all of the memories, and being one of the idols of my childhood. |

Magic number is now 1!!!
![]() I think the title of Bill Pennington's recent biography of Billy Martin sums him up best: Flawed genius. When Martin wasn't punching out marshmellow salesmen in sleazy bars or verbally abusing anyone unlucky enough to land in his multi-storey doghouse, he was brilliant. A tragic figure indeed. And a rare double dip, if I may.
![]() I'm not old enough to have seen Bobby Murcer during his first go-round with the Yanks, when he clearly at his best and a legitimate star. That said, the player I did see upon his return to the Yanks from 1979-83 was still pretty darn good. As a broadcaster and person, he was a prince of a man. He's still very much missed in Yankee land. Bobby Ray Murcer #1:

This scrappy little utility player represents the birth of our franchise, as he was our first selection from the Baltimore Orioles in the November 5th, 1976 Expansion Draft. He was taken after the Mariners selected Ruppert Jones at #1 overall from the Royals. He would go on to hit .310 for us in that inaugural season and would even try his hand at pitching in 3 different blowouts during the 1980 season. He was traded to the Mets in the 1980 offseason for anthem singing relief pitcher Roy Lee Jackson, and would eventually be a part of the trade that brought Sid Fernandez to the Mets from the Dodgers, which I'm absolutely sure rjl518 and other Mets' fans heartily endorsed.
