How long will the game go?

New to the game this year. I am currently in the year 2045 and games have just stopped. There is no schedule and nothing upcoming. Does it just end in 2045 or am i doing something wrong?

I simmed 100 years using the 2016 MLB rosters and everything went on just fine.

Yeah, you are only limited by your computer (memory, HD space, processor). It doesn't stop at a predetermined time. 2045 seems pretty short though, maybe you had bad luck.

You had a backup right? (hint, hint)

depends on how they defined variables relative to that situation. then it depends on robustness of the code... if no one is expected to see this large value for that particular variable (like year), they may not care to avoid the potential problem (see max cash on hand approaching 1/2 of 2^32 - it will break any calculation that adds up to over that definition.

as long as you have max cash limited, and budgets don't approach 1/2 of 2^32, you should be fine. the only thing that may not have a large max value is "Year." then, you will see a simulation of what it could have been like when the calendar rolled from '99 to '00. half joking, probably screw up aesthetics more than anything. e.g. the contracts and such are relative to current year, so those will work fine, but they may not be display as intended in profile information or news items.

You must have reached the year in which civilization crashes. So, no more baseball. Sorry.

Was it zombies, nuclear holocaust, plague, or aliens?

If it was zombies, maybe they could start a real Field of Dreams league.

You're new this year and you've already gotten to 2045??? I started in 2015 and I'm only into 2024 now! You're obviously not playing one pitch mode.

It's all about the defined variable. 3000 is likely not the cap unless they specifically chose that date for some odd reason - like to avoid going over the max value... but 3,000 is nowhere near. it will work well up until the variable for Year does not exceed it's definition in the code.

they could have used an unsigned or signed variable for year... thinking it out would result in an unsigned variable, since year can never be a negative. doesn't necessarily mean that's the case.

search the name and you can do the 2^X calculation. i think short is 256? double float goes to 2^32? whatever i don't knwo it off the top of my head.. and this stupid table left it out... lol oops my bad.

I don't have time right now to go trawling through old posts, but I'm certain Marcus or another of the team has said 3000 A.D is the cutoff

Edit: 3000 is at least the latest year a league can be started

I believe it was aliens.

Unfortunately I do not believe that I have a backup unless it does that automatically. I guess I'll just have to start over

Not sure what that is, I haven't really explored all the features. I just sim everything. I'm more interested in the GM, behind the scenes features

Question, hopefully germane to this thread: What are the precautions one can take to prolong game life?

Please skip universe size (numbers of leagues and teams); that's a given. Obviously the smaller, the better as to game longevity.

I'm talking about such things as "Purge deleted records from database" and "Clean up scouting database." Have people done these and other things successfully?

Because, I don't think it's dates that kill our games. It's the size of the files and the amount of data which needs to be read and processed, ultimately becoming corrupted or too much to handle, that dooms our games.

I just said "What the heck?" and went ahead with "Clean up scouting database." This went quickly and nothing has blown up yet.

However, that "Purge deleted records from database" has given me pause. Get a load of this:

FWIW, I've used the Purge option often without ill effect. In my case, it's during the many testing phases where I expand a large universe, perhaps change or delete teams or entire leagues, etc.... then ultimately either start over or Purge the league to avoid any lag and baggage. And of course, there's the testing the Purge part of the process, too. Backup suggestion is essential as always when we're trying new ideas or implementing new functions, so no harm no foul if something does go awry, but it hasn't yet for me. :knock on monitor:

Yes, I tried it just now after backing my game up. Seems to not have harmed anything and it cleaned up several dozen deleted players and coaches.
