I'll take a stab. If it was a pitch in the dirt it means while technically striking out he could still run for first, and somehow managed to beat the ball while the guy on 3rd scored?

Similar. A pitch in the dirt would be a wild pitch, but it was a passed ball. Not much practical difference, but if the ball gets by the catcher, the runner often makes first.
