Ratings relative to MLB?

After reading the in-game description, I'm even more confused. The game seems to recommend setting ratings relative to MLB, but it says that by default ratings are absolute values, which seems like the best option to me. Wouldn't I want to know if a 70-power guy is a 70-power guy regardless of what's going on in my league? Why would I want his ratings artificially adjusted just because there's a lot of power or a power draught in MLB at the time.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of checking the box to make ratings relative to MLB?

It's more useful if you aren't in the MLB. If you're in say, a minors team, or a foreign team, and this the skill ceiling is a lot lower, it's much more helpful as you aren't looking at a roster of completely identical players.

Granted I rely more on stats than ratings (and adjust the AI to do the same, 25/40/25/10) since I run low scouting accuracy, but it's a big differnece in less talent rich leagues, especially when running the now default 20-80 scale.

It's also useful in deciding whether or not to promote a player. Set his rating relative to the minor league level to which you want to promote and see if he stacks up. It's one more tool in the box to help with the decision.
