Omaha Mutuals (44-21 .677 1st place)

We are 3-4 against the Colts, having lost our last 4 against them. They are 4th in the Association in scoring and 5th in runs allowed, scoring 1 more run than their opponents to date. The have the second best fielding average in the league and are first in throwing out would-be base stealers. We faced Moore last time we played the Colts and he shut us out on 4 hits.

Bill Moore, Chi. (28-5.7) (R 9-8 3.22 9.4-2.2-2.9 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lee Sprague, Omaha (23-3.5) (R 26-12 1.61 6.7-1.0-4.8)

Won - 10 to 5

Finally, a little offense. We had 12 hits. C Harry Farrell (31-5.6) had 2 hits with our 4th home run of the season. He had 5 RBIs and threw out 3 of 4 base stealers. 3B George Dominick (29-4.8) had 2 hits with a triple, a walk and scored 3 runs. 1B Frank Burnett (30-4.4) had 2 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and knocked 2 in. Grand National Association Games:
Philadelphia (13) at Pittsburgh (5): Bill McClean (37-6.0) (24-15) over John Ericson (26-6.4) (2-3). 13 Pittsburgh errors did not help Ericson. Chicago Colts (32-34 .485 13 GB 5th place in the Grand National Association) at
Omaha Mutuals (45-21 .682 1st place)

Bill Moore, Chi. (28-5.7) (R 9-9 3.21 9.6-2.2-3.0 H-BB-K/9) vs. Tom Lee, Omaha (25-6.0) (R 15-6 2.24 6.9-1.9-4.4)

Won - 5 to 0

Tom Lee allowed 4 hits, walked 2 and struck out 4. Our 4th shutout and our first since the 3rd game of the season. Remember when we started the season with 3 straight shutouts? This is the first since then. All 4 shutouts have been against the Colts here in Omaha.

The only 2 guys hitting on the team right now, got it done for us again today. 2B Warren Hogan (29-7.2) had 3 hits with a double and a walk and scored 2 runs. C Harry Farrell (31-5.6) had 2 hits with a double, scored a run, knocked 1 in and threw out the only guy who tried to steal on him. SS Sam Hinkle (26-6.3) had a double and 2 RBIs.

Grand National Association Games:

Pittsburgh (3) at Philadelphia (4): Jim Postema (34-5.5) (13-12) over Frank Baker (35-6.9) (3-2). Postema allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 8. He did not get a hit at bat, but walked twice and scored 2 runs. Baker allowed 6 hits, walked 5 and struck out 3. He also hit a triple and scored a run.

Providence (3) at Baltimore (4): Levi Giddens (31-4.8) (3-5) over Egyptian Hooker (35-3.9) (13-15). RF Sol Renaud (26-5.7) had 4 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

Brooklyn (3) at Kansas City (2): Henry Rawls (29-4.3) (8-8) over Hosea Alexander (35-4.8) (17-11). Rawls allowed 7 hits, walked 2 and struck out 1. Alexander allowed 7 hits, walked 1 and struck out 1. He also had a hit and knocked in both Cowboy runs.

Liberty League Games:

Cincinnati (4) at New York (3): Charlie Branham (23-4.2) (13-11) over George Taylor (28-3.9) (12-13). The Gothams out-hit the Reds 10 to 6 and only made 3 errors to Cincinnati's 5. Taylor allowed 6 hits, walked 2 and struck out 3. Manager/C Jake Houghton (32-5.4) had a triple and a home run, his second of the year. He scored twice and knocked in 2. His 2-out triple in the top of the 8th, broke the tie.

Utica (0) at Troy (2): John Bendickson (31-6.0) (13-17) over Bill Henrichs (24-7.4) (1-8). !!!!!Bendy tosses the first no-hitter in Liberty League history!!!!! He walked 1 and struck out 6. Troy made 1 error. My Bendy's back and you're gonna be sorry! The icing on the cake is that Reddy Ricker (36-6.0) made one of his rare appearances (his 4th start of the season) and went 4 for 4 at the plate with a double and scored a run. He's now 9 for 19 (.474) with 3 doubles on the season. The bad news, for some, is that Manager /LF Silver Borresen (29-6.9) injured himself making a diving catch to keep the no-hitter alive and will miss the rest of the season. He only played 31 games this year, due to injuries, but hit .377 when in the lineup.

Washington (9) at Boston (3): John Callaham (34-5.5) (14-14) over Joe Peters (27-4.9) (22-12). Callaham allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. Peters struck out 9 for the second game in a row, but allowed 11 hits and along with 8 Red Cap errors, his day was not a happy one. LF Kid Orr (24-5.6) had 2 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. 2B Bill Gordon (26-3.7) of Boston, strained his achilles tendon and will have to rest for a week or two.

Detroit (5) at St. Louis (7): Sam White (28-5.2) (7-11) over William Rose (32-4.9) (11-16). White allowed 8 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3. CF Pop Engleson (28-5.1) had 2 hits with a double, stole a base and had 4 RBIs.

Chicago Colts (32-35 .478 14 GB 5th place in the Grand National Association) at
Omaha Mutuals (46-21 .687 1st place)

John Ritch, Chi. (28-7.8) (R 7-11 2.87 10.1-1.4-3.4 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lee Sprague, Omaha (23-3.5) (R 27-12 1.65 6.8-1.0-4.9)

Won - 5 to 1

Sprague allowed 5 hits, no walks and struck out 7. That gives him 200 strikeouts on the season.

2B Warren Hogan (29-7.2) continued his hot hitting. He went for 3 hits today and scored 2 runs. He has 22 hits in the last 4 games.

Ritch held us to 7 hits, no walks and struck out 3.

Thus ends our home stand. Next 11 days are on the rails and in hotels.

Grand National Association Games:

SS Tuck Pierce (26-5.5) had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. For the Orioles, 3B Jake Steitz (24-4.7) had 4 hits with a double, stole a base and had 3 RBIs.

Brooklyn (5) at Kansas City (6): Hosea Alexander (35-4.8) (18-11) over Nate Kendall (34-5.4) (6-14). Alexander allowed 7 hits, walked 2 and struck out 3. 3B Al Sarbacker (22-4.8) had 2 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Liberty League Games:
Boston (11) at Washington (12): Dan Burton (28-4.9) (11-18) over Joe Peters (27-4.9) (22-13). Peters has lost 3 of his last 4. Washington scored 5 times in the bottom of the 9th to win. The winning run scored on a 2-out error by probably the best fielding shortstop in baseball, Mike Stables (27-7.1). He leads all of the majors with an .899 fielding percentage at short. 1B Frank Roche (35-4.7) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 3 RBIs.

Troy (9) at Utica (2): Harry Lamb (28-6.4) (13-14) over Bill Henrichs (24-7.4) (1-9). Lamb allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 6. SS Sam Cowan (27-5.1) had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

Cincinnati (5) at New York (0): John Stevens (26-8.2) (21-10) over Jack Roberts (31-6.1) (23-18). !!!John Stephens throws the second no-hitter in Liberty League history!!! He walked 2 and struck out 5. 2B Pete Hinde (27-7.9) had 3 hits, stole 3 bases and scored a run. CF Fleet Wilcox (26-4.9) had 3 hits with a triple and scored 2 runs.

Detroit (7) at St. Louis (4): William Rose (32-4.9) (12-16) over Sam White (28-5.2) (7-12). Rose allowed 7 hits, walked none and struck out none. RF Joe Rerik (33-8.1) had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 3B John Schlosser (33-6.2) had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Omaha Mutuals (47-21 .691 1st place in the Grand National Association) at
Kansas City Cowboys (35-33 .515 12 GB 4th place)

We are 7-0 against Kansas City, so far. We swept them in a 4 game set at our place at the end of June. They are 3rd in the Association in runs scored and 6th in runs allowed. They lead in batting average, OBP and slugging.

3B George Dominick (29-4.8) has the flu and has not been hitting anyway, of late, so he'll take the day off.

Lee Sprague, Omaha (23-3.5) (R 28-12 1.63 6.8-0.9-4.9 H-BB-K/9) vs. Fred Barrow, K. C. (31-4.7) (R 13-17 3.08 10.4-1.3-4.1)

Won - 6 to 5

We made 13 hits and 5 errors; the Cowboys made 12 hits and 7 errors.

CF Stub Orlando (28-6.1) had 3 hits with a double and scored a run. 3B Warren Hogan (29-7.2) had 2 more hits, scored a run and had an RBI for his 5th multi-hit game in a row. But he won't get a chance to make it 6 in a row until next year. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Hogan took a throw from RF Hank Roberts (24-3.0) and tagged out SS Jake Potter (28-6.8) who was trying to make it from first to third on a single to right. But Hogan broke his leg in the collision and will miss the rest of the season. George Dominick had to come in to play third in the 9th when he could hardly stand from the flu and of course 3 balls were hit in his direction. 1 got through for a hit, but he made the two other plays, and the last one was especially nifty to end the game.

2B Horace Hays (32-6.1) had 2 hits, stole 2 bases and scored a run.

Sprague allowed 12 hits, no walks and struck out 5.

The aforementioned Potter of the Cowboys had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

This Kansas City ball park is probably the most friendly park in the Association for hitters. It's pretty hard to hit them out of here, but the ones the stay in the park seem to turn into hits more often than at other places.

Grand National Association Games:
Chicago (6) at Brooklyn (7): Henry Rawls (29-4.3) (9-8) over Bill Moore (28-5.7) (9-11). Rawls allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. CF Piggy Galon (22-4.8) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. 3B Pony McDonald (28-6.5) had 3 hits and 2 RBIs. 1B Henry Young (29-5.7) hit his 4th home run of the season with 2 men on. He also scored twice.

Pittsburgh (4) at Philadelphia (2): Tom Adams (29-6.0) (23-16) over Bill McClean (37-6.0) (25-16). Adams allowed 5 hits, walked 2 and struck out 3. McClean allowed 8 hits, walked 1 and struck out 7. The Quakers did not score until the 9th. Philadelphia lost 1B Pat Ross (26-5.4), the leading hitter in the GNA, for the next 3 weeks or so to a sprained ankle.

Providence (1) at Baltimore (0): Ted Ryther (29-4.3) (17-19) over Pop Yurkovich (31-5.6) (20-17). Ryther allowed 7 hits, walked none and struck out 3. Yurkovich only allowed 2 hits, walked 2 and struck out 8. The only run of the game was scored in the top of the 9th on a single, a wild pitch and an error.

Liberty League Games:

Detroit (3) at Cincinnati (5): Charlie Branham (23-4.2) (14-11) over Rufus Lee (32-3.9) (15-16). Branham allowed 5 hits, no walks and struck out 7. He won his 5th game in a row. Lee allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 6. 2B Pete Hinde (27-7.9) had 3 hits, stole a base and scored 2 runs. LF Billy Ross (26-5.6) scored the other 3 runs, had 2 hits with a home run and 2 RBIs.

St. Louis (7) at New York (3): Freddy Wood (27-6.3) (10-12) over George Taylor (28-3.9) (12-14). Wood allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 6. He won his fourth in a row. SS Sam Cowan (27-5.1) had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

Utica (6) at Troy (3): Willis Kornfield (30-6.0) (15-14) over John Bendickson (31-6.0) (13-18). Kornfield allowed 8 hits, walked 3 and struck out 6. Bendickson allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 6.

Washington (2) at Boston (4): William Little (22-6.0) (5-3) over John Callaham (34-5.5) (14-15). Little allowed 4 hits, walked 3 and struck out 8. He also had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. C Ben Settles (24-5.2) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. LF John Tomlinson (27-2.8) had 3 hits and a walk, but no runs or RBIs.

Yaaay, Bendy ...!

So wait - ... good old Bendy spins a no-hitter, the first no-hitter in the league on top of that, but he's got the most vile Borresen to thank for it?

Hard to wrap my feelings around that.

Just finished reading through much of thing thing (well the whole 1883 season so far anyway )

I'm curious if you could go into more detail about how you have the B League draft set up? I'd like to borrow the concept for my own league.

Since 1876, due to our small rosters, the B League draft has been 5 rounds. This December it will increase to 6 rounds and by the time we get to 25 man rosters, it will be an 8 round draft.

Steps I take:

1) At the end of the regular season for the B Leagues, I lock all of their rosters to prevent any players being released before I run the draft.

2) On December 1, I calculate how many players I need for the draft and then decide how many pitchers I need. For instance, this past draft we had 16 major league teams drafting for 5 rounds. That's 80 players needed. Since the A League rosters expanded to 20 players with 4 pitchers, that means I wanted 20% of those 80 players to be pitchers, or 16.

3). I then go to the B Leagues and look at the stats of the players and release the players needed for the draft as commissioner. I picked the top 16 pitchers in VORP and released them. I liked VORP for pitchers better than WAR, but since VORP is gone in OOTP16, I'll have to use WAR this coming draft. I needed 64 position players, so I divided that by 8 to get that I need the top 8 at each position. So, I released the top 8 catchers in WAR. I use a custom view that shows Defensive Innings Played when looking at the players by position and only release players that played at least 4 innings per scheduled game at the position. So if a player is rated as a catcher, but played the whole year as a first baseman, he would not qualify to be in the draft as a catcher. I do the same for First, Second and Third Base and Shortstop. I grouped all Outfielders together and released the top 24. The reason, I do this, is that the AI moves outfielders around so much, that sometimes a player who played every day would not qualify at any single position.

4) Immediately after releasing the players, I run a Free Agent Draft. (Currently my leagues have very few free agents at years' end and they are usually scrubs, so I assign them randomly to a B Team roster before the draft. When free agency enters the league and/or there are a lot of free agents in the pool before releasing the B League players, I will make a copy of the league and run the copy, delete ALL free agents before releasing the B League Players and then after the draft I will open a copy of the draft log in a browser, go back to my original league file and releae all the B League players and run the draft, manually picking for each team based on the draft log from the copy.)

If you do not run the draft immediately, teams will sign the players as free agents!

I assign the draft order currently based on win-loss record, with the best picking first. In the 1960's (when MLB actually started the Amateur Draft), we will switch to the worst picking first.

Why have an independent B League and not an independent A League? Well, I wish I could, but any teams that do not have a minor league affiliate use the reserve roster and those players do not play anywhere. That is why we do not have any leagues lower than the B Leagues. All B League teams have reserve rosters. We may change that in the future, but there was a reason I did not put the lower minors in the game as affiliates of the B Leagues, but now I forget what it was......

One thing to be aware of is that with an independent league, regardless of whether you classify it as minor or major, time spent in that league will count as major league service time. You can fix this, a little, by checking the box to reset major league service time of free agents signed from other leagues. But if a player plays 10 years in the majors and then goes and plays a year in the B Leagues and then comes back to the majors, he will come back with 0 service time.

One other thing: you need to make sure you check the box to disable automatic creation of free agents in your major league and disable the amateur draft. My B Leagues have an amateur draft each year to bring new players into the universe.

Omaha Mutuals (48-21 .696 1st place in the Grand National Association) at
Kansas City Cowboys (35-34 .507 13 GB 4th place)

I called up SS Harry Coats (29-4.9) to be a backup infielder for the next 3 days. I wanted to recall Charlie Smith (25-5.6), but he is banged up. When he heals in 3 days or so, we'll send Harry back to Pottsville.

Tom Lee, Omaha (25-6.0) (R 16-6 2.13 6.7-1.9-4.4 H-BB-K/9) vs. Fred Barrow, K. C. (31-4.7) (R 13-18 3.15 10.5-1.3-4.3)

Won - 7 to 2

We made 11 hits, all singles, and 7 errors.

Tom Lee held Kansas City to 5 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3. He also had a hit, scored a run and knocked 1 in.

3B George Dominick (29-4.8) had 2 hits, stole a base, scored 2 runs and knocked 1 in. RF Hank Roberts (24-3.0) had 2 hits and an RBI and threw out to baserunners, one at home and one at third.

The loss was particularly costly for the Cowboys; they lost 2/3 of their starting outfield to injuries. RF Charlie Jeffers (33-4.8) tweaked his back making a catch and will be hurting for the next week or two, though he might be able to still play. CF Connie Frenette (28-4.7) strained his hip sliding on the bases and will be out for 6 weeks, which is almost the rest of the season. He is currently leading the Association in runs scored and triples.

Grand National Association Games:
Chicago (5) at Brooklyn (9): Nate Kendall (34-5.4) (7-14) over John Ritch (28-7.8) (7-13). Kendall allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 2. Omaha Mutuals (49-23 .681 1st place in the Grand National Association) at
Brooklyn Gladiators (32-40 .444 17 GB 7th place)

Last year's Champions are not so good this season. We are 5-2 against them so far. We beat them 3 of 4 at our place at the beginning of July.

2B Charlie Smith (25-5.6) arrived on the train from Pottsville, so Harry Coats (29-4.9) is on his way back to Pennsylvania. We will give Smith another trial at 2B and if his fielding proves too rough, we'll let him try 3B, providing he hits.

Lee Sprague, Omaha (23-3.5) (R 29-13 1.66 7.0-0.9-4.9 H-BB-K/9) vs. Dick Cole, Bkln. (29-5.9) (R 14-16 2.39 9.2-1.2-2.6)

Lost - 6 to 3

We lost a game where out-hit our opponent for the second time in a row.

Cole held us to 8 hits, walked 2 and struck out 3.

Sprague allowed 6 hits, walked 1 and struck out 2.

We made 7 errors, 2 by Smith at 2B and 3 by John Demick (30-5.7) at first. Smith also went 0 for 5 at the plate, but we'll give him a mulligan on this, since he hasn't played in 3 weeks due to a thumb injury.

CF Stub Orlando (28-6.1) had 2 hits with a double and an RBI.

For the Gladiators, LF Otis York (27-6.3), last year's MVP, but not this year's, as he has only played in 20 games due to injuries, had only 1 hit, a triple, but scored 3 runs. He also stole a base.

Grand National Association Games:

Chicago (10) at Kansas City (7): John Ritch (28-7.8) (9-13) over Fred Barrow (31-4.7) (13-20). 2B Henry Potter (29-6.4) had 3 hits with a double and a triple, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. LF Candy Simpson (24-6.8) had 2 hits with his 3rd home run of the year, a walk and scored 2 runs. For the Cowboys, SS Al Sarbacker (22-4.8) had 3 hits with a triple and scored 3 runs. 1B Jim Lagana (27-6.6) had 2 hits with his 4th homer of the season, a walk and 2 RBIs.

Omaha Mutuals (49-25 .662 1st place in the Grand National Association) at
Brooklyn Gladiators (34-40 .459 15 GB tied for 5th place)

We used to be a good team. On July 12, we were 40-12. Since then we have gone 9-13.

We summoned C Charlie LeFevre (29-5.0) from Pottsville to replace the injured Harry Farrell (31-5.6). He is hitting .239 in the Interstate Association. He's been playing in A ball for 4 years and no one has been tempted to bring him to the major leagues before now. But he is a good defensive catcher, leading the IA in fielding and percentage of runners thrown out. He's a switch hitter who bats better from the left side. William Galloway (28-5.3) will now be our starter. We go from having a catcher batting .284 to one batting .173.

Sprague takes his third try at win #30.

Lee Sprague, Omaha (23-3.5) (R 29-14 1.70 7.0-0.9-4.9 H-BB-K/9) vs. Henry Rawls, Bkln. (29-4.3) (L 10-8 2.48 9.2-1.1-2.9)

Won - 4 to 1

Sprague allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5.

Rawls allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 3.

LeFevre had a hit in his first major league at bat.

1B John Demick (30-5.7) had 2 hits with a double and an RBI, but also made 2 errors. Each team made 5 errors.

Grand National Association Games:
Chicago (0) at Kansas City (4): Fred Barrow (31-4.7) (14-20) over John Ritch (28-7.8) (9-14). Barrow allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5 in his second shutout of the year. With his bat he had 2 hits, scored a run and knocked 1 in. 2B Jack Grossman (28-7.1) had 2 doubles, scored a run and had an RBI.

Liberty League Games:
Detroit (8) at New York (3): Rufus Lee (32-3.9) (18-16) over Jack Roberts (31-6.1) (26-20). Lee allowed 6 hits, walked 4 and struck out 3. SS Herman Bonjour (30-5.6) had 3 hits with 2 doubles and scored a run. LF Jesse Spencer (33-5.0) had 3 hits, a walk, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Omaha Mutuals (51-25 .671 1st place)

We are 9-2 against Kansas City. We won the first 9, but lost the last 2. We split a 4 game set with them in Missouri a week and a half ago.

Fred Barrow, K. C. (31-4.7) (R 14-20 3.02 10.5-1.3-4.2 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lee Sprague, Omaha (23-3.5) (R 31-14 1.67 6.9-0.9-4.9)

Won - 3 to 2 in 10 innings

LF Dave Cunningham (28-5.4) singled with 1-out to score 3B George Dominick (29-4.8) for the win. Cunningham had 3 hits. Dominick had 2, scored twice and knocked 1 in. 2B Charlie Smith (25-5.6) had a double and a triple and scored a run, but made 4 errors. He has started his last game at second base for Omaha. We will give him a trial at third and if that does not work, we will send him on a train back to Pottsville.

Sprague went 10 innings, allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 3.

Grand National Association Games:
Brooklyn (11) at Chicago (5): Henry Rawls (29-4.3) (11-9) over John Ritch (28-7.8) (9-15). LF Otis York (27-6.3) had 1 hit, but it was his second home run of the year. He also walked, stole a base and scored 4 runs. C Jim Granier (28-5.7) had 2 hits, one of them a home run with the bases loaded, his third homer of the season. He had 6 RBIs.

Kansas City Cowboys (40-37 .519 12 GB 4th place in the Grand National Association) at
Omaha Mutuals (52-25 .675 1st place)

Alexander leads the majors in shutouts and we have lost the last 2 times he faced us.

Hosea Alexander, K. C. (35-4.8) (R 22-11 2.72 9.2-1.0-3.8 H-BB-K/9) vs. Tom Lee, Omaha (25-6.0) (R 17-8 2.16 7.2-1.9-4.1)

Lost - 4 to 3

First ball that got hit to Charlie Smith (25-5.6) at third base, he butchered. He is now on a train to Pottsville. 1B John Demick (30-5.7) is with him. Two error machines that we do not need around here. Neither is helping the offense either.

Remember when we were leading the league in runs scored? Now, only Providence has scored fewer runs than us on the season.

We gave up 3 runs early and then clawed our back bit by bit to finally tie the game up in the bottom of the 8th. But P Hosea Alexander drove in a run in the top of the 9th and then set us down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to beat us.

Alexander allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 3.

Tom Lee allowed 9 hits, walked 2 and struck out 8.

SS Sam Hinkle (26-6.3) had 2 hits, stole a base and scored 2 runs.

For the Cowboys, 1B Jim Lagana (27-6.6) had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

Grand National Association Games:

Pittsburgh (6) at Philadelphia (3): Tom Adams (29-6.0) (25-17) over Bill McClean (37-6.0) (28-18). Adams allowed 6 hits, walked 1 and struck out 2. McClean allowed 7 hits, walked 3 and struck out 4. He also drove in a run with a double. SS Al Steel (23-7.0) had a hit, a walk, stole 3 bases and scored 3 runs.

Providence (10) at Baltimore (2): Egyptian Hooker (35-3.9) (17-15) over Pop Yurkovich (31-5.6) (20-22). Hooker allowed 7 hits, walked 1 and struck out 1. Yurkovich left the game in the 4th inning with a pain, but it was a false alarm. C Jimmy Babcock (27-6.9) had 3 hits with a double and scored a run. RF Marshal Rhodes (38-3.1) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 3 RBIs.

Brooklyn (6) at Chicago (5): Dick Cole (29-5.9) (17-17) over John Ritch (28-7.8) (9-16). Cole allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. C Jim Granier (28-5.7) had 3 hits and scored 2 runs. 1B Henry Young (29-5.7) had a double and his 6th home run of the season and 4 RBIs.

Liberty League Games:

Cincinnati (4) at Detroit (2): John Stevens (26-8.2) (23-13) over William Rose (32-4.9) (13-21). Stevens allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 4. With his bat, he stroked 3 hits, scored a run and drove 1 in. Rose lost for the 4th time in a row. 1B Frederick Moore (30-6.7) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. For the Wolverines, RF Jackie Porter (29-6.3) had 3 doubles, scored once and knocked 1 in.

Utica (6) at Troy (3): Willis Kornfield (30-6.0) (19-15) over Harry Lamb (28-6.4) (14-18). Kornfield allowed 7 hits, walked 2 and struck out 1. He has won 5 of his last 6. Lamb allowed 7 hits, walked 1 and struck out 6. He has lost 4 in a row and is 4-13 since June 18th. He had 2 hits and scored a run at bat. RF Joe Coffey (27-5.2) had a double and a triple, scored once and had an RBI.

Washington (2) at Boston (7): Joe Peters (27-4.9) (26-15) over Dan Burton (28-4.9) (12-20). Peters allowed 5 hits, walked 2 and struck out 7. At the plate, he had a 2 hits and an RBI. He has won 4 in a row. CF George Kunz (30-5.7) had 3 hits with a double, stole a base and scored 3 runs.

New York (5) at St. Louis (8): Sam White (28-5.2) (11-13) over Jack Roberts (31-6.1) (27-21). 1B Harold Bradley (25-5.1) had 4 hits with a double and a triple, scored 2 runs and knocked in 2.

Kansas City Cowboys (41-37 .526 11 GB 4th place in the Grand National Association) at
Omaha Mutuals (52-26 .667 1st place)

3B/1B Rube Ford (32-5.1) is back from Pottsville. He ain't hittin' much, but he's the best defender we have at first. I also brought up 2B Doc Gerig (24-5.0). He bats left-handed and will start against righties. He looks to be a solid, if unspectacular defender. He can run like the wind (he stole 26 bases in 48 games in A Ball). He was hitting .262 with a little pop. We'll try him at lead off and see if he can cut it. If not, we still have 2B Felix Hill (24-4.2) to try. We would have called him up now, but he is banged up for the next week or two.

Sam Doty, K. C. (34-6.4) (L 4-5 3.40 10.8-2.2-2.9 H-BB-K/9) vs. Tommy Webb, Omaha (31-4.0) (R 3-3 2.57 8.7-1.3-2.4)

Lost - 8 to 4

Webb did not have anything today; he gave up 15 hits, walked 2 and struck out 2.

Doty, meanwhile, shut us out for 8 innings. We did not score until the 9th. He allowed 8 hits, walked 1 and struck out 1 and had 2 hits with his bat with an RBI.

Our offense looks really weak on paper against left-handed pitching; it looks even weaker on grass.

Only highlight was C Charlie Lefevre (29-5.0) getting 2 hits with a double and an RBI.

SS Sam Hinkle (26-6.3) was injured and will likely miss the rest of the season with a deeply bruised foot. He was just starting to hit some. We'll have to call up Harry Coats (29-4.9), the Hitless Wonder, to play short the rest of the way. He's the only good fielder we have.

For the Cowboys, CF Jack Wallace (30-7.5) had 4 hits with a double and 2 RBIs. RF Charlie Jeffers (33-4.8), playing hurt, had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI, but tore a stomach muscle and will sit the rest of the year.

Grand National Association Games:

Philadelphia (11) at Pittsburgh (4): Jim Postema (34-5.5) (14-14) over John Ericson (26-6.4) (4-5). Postema allowed 7 hits, walked 2 and struck out 1. He hit a double, scored a run and knocked 1 in. C Willie Ticknor (27-3.1) had 4 hits with a run and an RBI. 2B Dick Whaley (28-4.5) hit a 2-run triple and scored 3 runs.

Baltimore (7) at Providence (1): Pop Yurkovich (31-5.6) (21-22) over Ted Ryther (29-4.3) (19-22). Yurkovich allowed 6 hits, walked 2 and struck out 1. He had a hit and an RBI. 3B Jake Steitz (24-4.7) had 3 hits with a run and an RBI. 1B Jim Booker (32-5.2) had 3 hits with a double, a walk and scored 2 runs.

Brooklyn (9) at Chicago (5): Nate Kendall (34-5.4) (8-15) over Bill Moore (28-5.7) (9-15). Kendall allowed 11 hits, no walks and struck out 1. 2B Bill Skelton (30-6.2) had 4 hits, stole a base and scored 3 runs. 1B Henry Young (29-5.7) had a double and his 7th home run of the year, a walk and 2 RBIs. 5 of his home runs have been hit in August. He is now tied for the league lead with Al Cannon (38-5.4) of Baltimore. LF Otis York (27-6.3) had to leave the game with back spasms. They figure he will miss about 4 weeks. The Colts' 2B Henry Potter (29-6.4) will miss about 3 weeks with a bum shoulder.

Liberty League Games:
Boston (5) at Washington (6): John Callaham (34-5.5) (16-18) over William Little (22-6.0) (6-4). Manager/CF Kid Orr (24-5.6) had 4 hits with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs. LF Ace Trimmell (25-5.0) had 3 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 1B Tom Coponen (27-7.0) had 3 hits with a double and 2 runs scored.

Troy (7) at Utica (2): John Bendickson (31-6.0) (15-19) over Bill Henrichs (24-7.4) (2-11). Bendickson allowed 9 hits, walked 1 and struck out 2. Henrichs allowed 6 hits, walked 1 and struck out 2. 2B Reddy Ricker (36-6.0) had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. LF Monte Moody (25-6.9) had 2 hits with a home run, stole a base snd scored twice. For Utica, 3B Charlie Taylor (28-5.2) had 4 hits with a double, stole a base and scored a run. CF Sam Selke (30-7.4) pulled a muscle and will miss 4 weeks.

Cincinnati (5) at Detroit (6): William McLeod (24-5.6) (4-1) over Charlie Branham (23-4.2) (16-14). McLeod allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5. SS Herman Bonjour (30-5.6) had 4 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. Why did I cut him? I could sure use him now, with Hinkle out. For the Reds, RF Adam Trombley (29-6.8) had 4 hits with a double and a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

New York (11) at St. Louis (2): George Taylor (28-3.9) (14-15) over Josh Yates (29-7.4) (1-2). Taylor allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 2. He hit 3 singles. 1B Willie Burton (28-8.5) had 4 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 2B Ed Glass (24-4.5) had 3 hits with a double, a walk, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs. 1B Leo Pearce (27-5.5) had 2 hits with a home run and 3 RBIs.

Grand National Association Games:

Pittsburgh (5) at Philadelphia (6) in 10 innings: Bill McClean (37-6.0) (29-18) over Tom Adams (29-6.0) (25-18). McClean allowed 8 hits, walked 2 and struck out 2. Adams allowed 9 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3. The Quakers scored the tying run in the bottom of the 9th on a 2-out wild pitch. In the bottom of the 10th, 1B Davy Palmer (32-7.0) hit a 2-out single to win it. After the game, Bill McClean stepped down as manager of the Quakers, saying he just did not enjoy the responsibility of pitching and managing. After consulting with his players, owner Charlie Barfield (50-5.8) agreed to put injured OF Jim Hudson (29-6.2) in charge.

Providence (2) at Baltimore (3): Pop Yurkovich (31-5.6) (22-22) over Ted Ryther (29-4.3) (19-23). Yurkovich allowed 6 hits, walked none and struck out 5. Ryther allowed 8 hits, walked 1 and struck out 1. Baltimore scored twice in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game and then scored in the bottom of the 9th to win. SS Sam Cowan (27-5.1) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. C Pop Buck (29-5.2) had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Washington (4) at Boston (5): Joe Peters (27-4.9) (27-15) over John Callaham (34-5.5) (16-18). Peters allowed 9 hits, walked 3 and struck out 7. He won his 5th game in a row. Callaham allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 2. All the scoring was done by the 5th inning.
