Week 20 Review
Brewers record 48-74 (19 GB behind the Reds)
Brewers record last week: 1-6 Power Rankings: 27th (25th) Another horrible week, that even caused our owner to say "don't suck completely". Hopefully I don't get the sack? Darryl Hamilton suffered a high ankle sprain and is going to miss three weeks. Darryl Hamilton watch: .269/.321/.341 - 20 SB, 2 HR, 33 RBI, 0.2 WAR Brewers transactions: CF Darryl Hamilton was placed on the 15-day DL OF Gerald Young (.314/.398/.366) was activated from rehab assignment SS Jose Valentin (.240/.328/.407) was activated from the 15-day DL IF Bill Spiers (.164/.254/.164) was placed on waivers and DFAed RP Scott Bankhead (1-2, 7.00 ERA) was sent to AAA RP Bob Scanlan (0-1-2, 2.84 ERA - AAA) was recalled from AAA Players of the Week: AL - Cecil Fielder, Detroit - .480, 3 HR, 14 RBI NL - Derrick May, Cubs - .542, 2 HR, 5 RBI Notable injuries: SP David Weathers, Florida - 0-0, 1.80 ERA - Out for 7 months 1B Julio Franco, Montréal - .337, 14 HR, 47 RBI - Out for 3 months Accomplishments: 2B Steve Sax, Oakland - .296, 2 HR, 20 RBI - Career hit No 2000 Impressive Game Performances: n/a Big contract extensions: RF Larry Walker, Montréal - .321, 9 HR, 47 RBI - 1 year $ 1,900,000 |

Week 21 Review
Brewers record 51-77 (21 GB behind the Reds)
Brewers record last week: 3-3 Power Rankings: 28th (27th) We moved into 4th place for two days this week, just to start another three game losing streak. Especially our bullpen is a disaster, but our current lineup (OPS's: .776, .786, .669, .671, .738, .938, .849, .824) gives some hope for next season. We also gave 32-year old 2B Jody Reed (.253/.341/.316, 3 HR, 29 RBI, ZR +6.9) a new 2-year deal worth $660,000. He's a typical No 8 hitter, but likely one of the best defensive 2B in the league. Darryl Hamilton watch: .269/.321/.341 - 20 SB, 2 HR, 33 RBI, 0.2 WAR Still injured - his glove is missed, but his bat not at all. His primary replacement Troy O'Leary has already five homeruns this month. Brewers transactions: RP Bob Scanlan (0-4, 8.28 ERA) was sent to AAA RP Scott Bankhead (0-0, 1.80 ERA - AAA) was recalled from AAA Players of the Week: AL - Randy Velarde, Yankees - .550, 2 HR, 5 RBI NL - Andres "The Big Cat" Galarraga, Colorado - .593, 2 HR, 8 RBI Notable injuries: RP Armando Benítez, Baltimore - 1-2-4, 3.64 ERA - Out for 2-3 months Accomplishments: n/a Impressive Game Performances: n/a Big contract extensions: n/a |

Week 22 Review
Brewers record 53-82 (22 GB behind the Reds)
Brewers record last week: 2-5 Power Rankings: 27th (28th) Another awful week that saw us allowing 16, 9, 10 and 11 runs. No matter what pitching is going to be the main area of upgrading in off-season. Obviously we got swept by Montréal (collecting wins 96 to 98), but we had chances in all three games. Jeff Conine and Jose Valentin got injured in two plays after each other, but the diagnosis is not known yet. Darryl Hamilton watch: .269/.321/.341 - 20 SB, 2 HR, 33 RBI, 0.2 WAR Still injured Brewers transactions: n/a Players of the Week: AL - Paul O'Neill, Yankees - .423, 4 HR, 11 RBI NL - Andres "The Big Cat" Galarraga, Colorado - .433, 4 HR,11 RBI (second in a row) Notable injuries: n/a Accomplishments: n/a Impressive Game Performances: RF Tony Gwynn Sr, San Diego - .385, 12 HR, 60 RBI - had 6 hits against Colorado Big contract extensions: n/a |

August in review
Yet another low of the season, August turned into the worst month so far. While we have some batters to give us hope for 1995, pitching still mostly sucks. Sadly some player are not developing the way we hoped or showing their age too early (Kevin Seitzer and Jose Valentin for example).
August ended with a 10-18 record and we are now 22 GB behind the Reds and 2 GB the Cardinals for fourth place in the division. Who was doing well? (1) OF Troy O'Leary had 14 extra base hits, good for a 177OPS+. Huge upgrade over Vaughn. (2) C Rick Wrona got hot after a cold month and injury in July. Seven homeruns and nine doubles in addition to very solid catching are more you'd expect from your catcher. (3) LF Jeff Conine had his best month in a Brewer uniform so far. Close to .400 OBP and a .955 OPS. (4) RP Mike Ignasiak was very dominant (0.75 WHIP) after his return from the DL. Starters Angel Miranda (2.48 ERA) and Mike Birkbeck (3.02 ERA) gave us a chance to win as well. Who was doing badly? (1) Most of the bullpen: Mike Timlin (8.74 ERA), Huck Flener (6.75 ERA), Scott Bankhead (8.31 ERA) and Ricky Bones (7.98 REA) were simply overmatched and not good enough for the big leagues. (2) Same is true for starting pitchers Cal Eldred and Pedro Salinas (both 2.42 WHIP). (3) RF Tom Brunansky (.167 AVG) and 3B Jeff Cirillo (.230 AVG) did very little to impress me. |

Week 23 Review
Brewers record 57-84 (21 GB behind the Reds)
Brewers record last week: 4-2 Power Rankings: 24th (27th) Wow, a winning week with two series wins against the Reds and Padres. Our bats are coming alive recently and we do not longer rank dead last in every offensive category, we are now next last. While the injury of Jeff Conine was minor, Jose Valentin was placed on the DL again. He might make it for the last series of the season barely. We picked up two players off waivers and Darryl Hamilton came back from the DL with a bases clearing triple of Trevor Hoffman. Darryl Hamilton watch: .270/.323/.346 - 20 SB, 2 HR, 36 RBI, 0.2 WAR Brewers transactions: SP Scott Aldred (1-0-1, 4.91 ERA) was claimed off waivers from Montréal (and went right into our rotation pitching seven strong innings) C Eric Helfand (.304, 3 HR, 32 RBI) was claimed off waivers from Oakland. He will serve as backup catcher after B J Surhoff is our every day 1B now. SP Pedro Salinas (1-4, 7.33 ERA) was demoted to AAA. IF José Durán (.279, 20 HR, 71 RBI) was placed on the active roster. IF Bill Spiers (.280, 0H HR, 15 RBI) was placed on the active roster. Players of the Week: AL - Red Hudler, Angels - .500, 6 HR, 13 RBI NL - Kevin Mitchell, Cincinnati - .545, 3 HR,4 RBI Notable injuries: MR Bob Patterson, Angels - 2-4-2, 4.93 ERA - out for around a year Accomplishments: Fn/a Impressive Game Performances: n/a Big contract extensions: n/a How do the players fare we traded away? OF Matt Mieske is a solid every day player for Seattle (.270, 13 HR, 41 RBI). LF Greg Vaughn is also doing well at Florida (.341, 5 HR, 22 RBI). PH Franklin Stubbs gets his hits in limited action at Florida, too (.317, 0 HR, 6 RBI). 3B Jack Williams is rarely used and struggles at Florida (.195, 0 HR, 3 RBI). CF Terry Barlow who was also part of the package, had a solid season a S A (.291, 1 HR, 17 RBI). Our opening day starting pitcher Bill Wegman turned into a decent setup man at San Francisco (1-1-2, 2.45 ERA). Also Jaime Navarro is better than all our remaining starters (6-2, 3.43 ERA). |

Week 24 Review
Brewers record 58-89 (22 GB behind the Reds)
Brewers record last week: 1-5 Power Rankings: 28th (24th) Horrible week where we had to send two pitchers to the mound to save an exhausted bullpen (even if we are in september). Aldred and Eldred pitching on batting practice level right now. The race for the No 1 pick is most likely down to three teams: Detroit (57 wins), we (58 wins) and Texas (59 mins). We are facing three horrible Cardinals starters next, so we might avoid those 100 losses. Montréal (105 wins) and Houston (90 wins) are already qualified for the playoffs. Darryl Hamilton watch: .269/.323/.344 - 21 SB, 2 HR, 37 RBI, 0.2 WAR Brewers transactions: n/a Players of the Week: AL - Albert Belle, Cleveland - .565, 5 HR, 14 RBI NL -Tim Wallach, Dodgers - .611, 3 HR, 7 RBI Notable injuries: C Mike Macfarlane, Kansas City - .214, 16 HR, 61 RBI - out for four months MR Jim Corse, Oakland - 3-4, 3.25 ERA - out for four to five months SP Jamie Moyer, Baltimore - 14-13, 3.84 ERA - out for 14 months Accomplishments: n/a Impressive Game Performances: Our C Rick Wrona - .282, 16 HR, 63 RBI - had a 6 RBI game in 8-10 loss against Atlanta Big contract extensions: n/a |

Week 25 Review
Brewers record 60-94 (25 GB behind the Reds)
Brewers record last week: 2-5 Power Rankings: 27th (28th) I could copy the statement from last week. Depressing stuff. Clearly my worst season ever by a landslide. Starting pitchers imploding, bullpen unable to throw strikes, 2B with a three game etc. At least we managed to beat one of those horrible opposing starting pitchers mentioned last week. We are tied with Detroit for the worst record and No 1 Draft Pick. Still only two teams qualified for the playoffs. The season of OF Troy O'Leary (.283, 13 HR, 43 RBI) - one of our best hitters - ended after suffering a sprained ankle. Darryl Hamilton watch: .271/.323/.345 - 23 SB, 2 HR, 41 RBI, 0.2 WAR Brewers transactions: Recalled MR Bob Scanlan (0-2-3, 2.59 ERA - AAA) and SP Pedro Salinas (2-3, 6.68 ERA - AAA) from New Orleans after their season ended. Salinas might get two starts after I sent Cal Eldred (6-15, 6.42 ERA) to the bullpen. Players of the Week: AL - Todd Hundley, Minnesota - .385, 6 HR, 12 RBI NL -Craig Shipley, San Diego - .516, 1 HR, 5 RBI Notable injuries: n/a Accomplishments: n/a Impressive Game Performances: n/a Big contract extensions: CF Marquis Grissom, Montréal - .325, 16 HR, 59 RBI - 1 year $ 1,900,000 |

Week 26 Review
Brewers record 64-96 (24 GB behind the Cubs)
Brewers record last week: 4-2 Power Rankings: 25th (27th) Oh well we avoided a 100 loss season and somehow managed six quality starts in a row. I think that's something that hasn't happened before this season. We'd need to lose both remaining games to draft first in three days. As we really have to improve our pitching and CF for next season, it looks as if we'd pick Hideo Nomo. Add another decent starting pitcher or two via free agency and we should finish above .500 next year? The 78-82 Giants lost 12 games in a row and qualified for the playoffs. Darryl Hamilton watch: .269/.320/.344 - 24 SB, 2 HR, 45 RBI, 0.0 WAR Brewers transactions: Activited SS Jose Valentin - .243, 8 HR, 56 RBI - from the DL. Players of the Week: AL - Ken Griffey Jr, Seattle - .458, 3 HR, 8 RBI NL -Andres "The Big Cat" Galarraga, Colorado - .400, 4 HR, 6 RBI Notable injuries: SP Jose Rijo, Cincinnati - 14-13, 2.59 ERA - out for 2-3 months (and the playoffs) Accomplishments: n/a Impressive Game Performances: n/a Big contract extensions: C Ed Taubensee, Houston - .290, 21 HR, 96 RBI - 4 year $ 7,785,000

End of regular season 1994
We ended the season with a 6-4 run to end with a 65-97 record and the 3rd overall draft pick. Dave Nilsson collected five hits in a Mets season finale demolition to raise his average to .307.
While Houston and Montréal were the clearly best teams of their leagues, they still have a long way to go to reach the World Series. Playoffs Round 1: Chicago White Sox (90-72) - Houston Astros (100-62) New York Yankees (89-73) - Cleveland Indians (92-70) San Francisco Giants (79-83) - Montréal Pandas (117-45) Atlanta Braves (94-68) - Chicago Cubs (89-73) AL pitching title and Triple Crown: Randy D. Johnson, Seattle: 23-10, 2.43 ERA, 366 K NL pitching title: Greg Maddux, Atlanta: 27-4, 1.86 ERA, 203 K AL batting title and Triple Crown: Jeff Bagwell, Houston: .368, 56 HR, 149 RBI NL batting title: Tony Gwynn Sr, San Diego: .376, 12 HR, 70 RBI |

Season and september in review
We ended September with a 11-14 record, making it our second best month of the season. Our total 65-97 gave us a quite disappointing .401 winning percentage and a last place division finish.
We were last in the NL in the following categories: (pitching) - most base on balls - fewest strikeouts (offense) - slugging percentage - on-base + slugging Our offense did ok in the following categories: - extra base hits (7th) - base on balls (6th) - (few) strikeouts (2nd) - stoles bases (5th) Nothing positive to say about our team pitching or defensive efficiency. Who was doing well? (1) OF Dave Nilsson - .366/.424/.646 - 4 HR, 12 RBI and a 182 OPS+ (2) C Rick Wrona - .318/.392/.545 - 4 HR, 21 RBI and a 148 OPS+ (3) Relievers Graeme Lloyd, Scott Bankhead, Huck Flener and closer Mike Fetters were ok by collecting sub 3.50 ERAs Who was doing badly? (1) No 4 and 5 starters Cal Eldred (11.40 ERA) and Scott Aldred (6.95 ERA) were both demoted to the bullpen. The latter even had some success there. (2) Relievers Mike Ignasiak, Mike Timlin and Ricky Bones had an ERA of 7.50 or worse. (3) Our 1B platoon Kevin Seitzer and B J Surhoff went 32 of 136 with 0 HR and 10 RBIs. Not sure if they are the solution for next season. Minor league teams: AAA New Orleans 64-80 (5th), did not make playoffs AA El Paso 81-59 (2nd), lost in the 1st round of the playoffs A Stockton 73-67 (2nd), did not make playoffs S A Beloit 54-22 (1st), lost in the final round of the playoffs A Helena 57-11 (1st), won playoffs The league don't not publish awards for August yet!

Brewers players individual review
C Eric Helfand (25 years) - .231/.310/.385 - OPS+ 85 - 0.1 WAR - 26 AB, 1 HR, 2 RBI - ZR +0.0 - $112,000 - Waiver claim late in the season, might compete for backup catcher in spring training
C Rick Wrona (30 years) - .282/.342/.519 - OPS+ 127 - 3.5 WAR - 401 AB, 18 HR, 71 RBI - ZR +6.5 - $860,000 - One of the biggest positive surprises this season. He was supposed to be a strong defensive - no offense catcher. Caught 43,2 % of base stealers and signed a two year extension. 1B John Jaha (28 years) - .238/.360/.397 - OPS+ 103 - 0.1 WAR - 63 AB, 2 HR, 8 RBI - ZR +0.1 - $117,600 - Spent most of the season at AAA and found some late season success at pinch hitter. Might compete for a bench role in spring training. 1B Kevin Seitzer (32 years) - .254/.318/.357 - OPS+ 81 - 0.1 WAR - 473 AB, 6 HR, 56 RBI - ZR 1.2 - $600,000 - Disappointing season for him as we expected him to hit close to .300. Solid defender, but that two extension we handed him looks like a bad move. 1B B J Surhoff (30 years) - .260/.324/.405 - OPS+ 94 - -0.0 WAR - 481 AB, 9 HR, 68 RBI, 5 SB - ZR 1.9 - $112,000 - Struggled down the season, but his versatility (accomplished at four positions) justifies his new two year deal. 2B José Duran (28 years) - .286/.400/.429 - OPS+ 122 - 0.1 WAR - 21 AB, 0 HR, 6 RBI - ZR -0.6 - $112,000 - Career minorleaguer that deserved a september call up after a strong AAA showing. Should not be on the Opening Day roster next season. 2B Jody Reed (32 years) - .248/.342/.312 - OPS+ 77 - 1.1 WAR - 491 AB, 4 HR, 44 RBI, 9 SB - ZR +6.8 - $265,000 - Should receive the unsung hero award. Walked 67 times and reached base a lot. Might even win a golden glove and was signed to a cheap two year extension. 2B Bill Spiers (28 years) - .161/.250/.161 - OPS+ 13 - -0.5 WAR - 56 AB, 0 HR, 1 RBI, 5 SB - ZR +0.7 - $112,000 - Spent most of the time at AAA and couldn't get the job done when called up. Strong non tender candidate. 3B Jeff Cirillo (25 years) - .261/.319/.361 - OPS+ 82 - 0.2 WAR - 482 AB, 7 HR, 43 RBI, 7 SB - ZR +3.2 - $112,000 - Still developing, but quite disappointing numbers. Next season might be the make it break it one. SS Pat Listach (27 years) - .232/.291/.270 - OPS+ 52 - 0.0 WAR - 267 AB, 1 HR, 26 RBI, 14 SB - ZR +3.8 - $117,600 - Got far too much playing time to replace the often injured Valentin. Doesn't get on base enough to be valuable. SS Jose Valentin (24 years) - .241/.323/.402 - OPS+ 93 - 2.1 WAR - 378 AB, 8 HR, 57 RBI, 18 SB - ZR +5.9 - $117,600 - Showed only glimpses of an potential All Star. Might have hit 60 doubles and collected 30 errors over a full (healthy) season. Nevertheless a building block of our future. LF Troy O'Leary (25 years) - .283/.341/.525 - OPS+ 128 - 1.4 WAR - 240 AB, 13 HR, 43 RBI, 4 SB - ZR -1.7 - $112,000 - Got called up after Vaughn got traded - and delivered the offensive output we had expected from Vaughn. Very likely on the Opening Day roster next season. LF Jeff Conine (28 years) - .326/.384/.544 - OPS+ 146 - 4.7 WAR - 564 AB, 28 HR, 105 RBI, 1 SB - ZR -2.1 - $810,000 - Couldn't keep up his magical Florida numbers, but is clearly one of our best bats in the lineup. Might move to 1B next season to create space for O'Leary in LF. LF Dave Nilsson (24 years) - .307/.362/.526 - OPS+ 135 - 1.5 WAR - 287 AB, 12 HR, 43 RBI - ZR -3.9 - $112,000 - Started the season at AAA like O'Leary, but became a driving force of our late season lineup. Might be our Opening Day RF next season. CF Darryl Hamilton (29 years) - .272/.324/.347 - OPS+ 80 - 0.1 WAR - 533 AB, 2 HR, 46 RBI, 25 SB - ZR -3.4 - $1.140.000 - He was simply average, or maybe even below that. Sad to see this fan favourite walk, but he does not justify a $1,000,000 salary anymore. RF Tom Brunansky (34 years) - .230/.329/.426 - OPS+ 101 - 0.2 WAR - 291 AB, 13 HR, 35 RBI - ZR +3.0 - $112,000 - Despite his low batting average, he did what we asked of him. Above average defender in LF and RF, good pinch hitter. Depending on the draft, we might bring him back as fourth outfielder? RF Gerald Young (29 years) - .293/.372/.355 - OPS+ 96 - 0.5 WAR - 259 AB, 1 HR, 21 RBI, 30 SB - ZR -1.7 - $433,700 - Very successful waiver claim. He'd be the perfect fourth outfielder, but his defending is scary. Also demands much more than fourth outfielder money. Projected 1995 lineup: C Rick Wrona 1B Jeff Conine 2B Jody Reed SS Jose Valentin 3B Jeff Cirillo / B J Surhoff LF Jeff O'Leary CF free agent RF Dave Nilsson |

Brewers players individual review
SP Mike Birkbeck (33 years) - 11-13, 3.83 ERA, 4.27 FIP - 247,0 IP, 241 H, 20 HR, 110 BB, 166 K, 1.42 WHIP - $ 200,000 - A workhorse of a starting pitcher that gave as usually a chance to win. Will be back as No 4 or No 5 next season (if we can get the starting pitchers we want). SP Sean Blanton (29 years) - 10-9, 4.28 ERA, 4.81 FIP - 212.1 IP, 221 H, 21 HR, 95 BB, 123 K, 1.49 WHIP - $ 112,000 - Came out of nowhere to become our No 2 starter. 19 quality starts and three complete games were much more than expected. Next seasons No 5? SP Angel Miranda (24 years) - 7-7, 4.30 ERA, 5.01 FIP - 98.1 IP, 101 H, 14 HR, 40 BB, 59 K, 1.43 WHIP - $ 112,000 - He's too young to give up on him yet, but his numbers are quite horrible (14 longballs in less than 100 IP). SP Pedro Salinas (25 years) - 6-9, 5.25 ERA, 4.75 FIP - 121.2 IP, 156 H, 15 HR, 52 BB, 80 K, 1.71 WHIP - $ 112,000 - Another potential No 5 starter (or AAA ace?) that should get another look in spring training. SP Scott Aldred (26 years) - 2-3-2, 5.40 ERA, 5.30 FIP - 40.0 IP, 52 H, 6 HR, 19 BB, 27 K, 1.77 WHIP - $ 112,000 - Almost pitched a shutout against us and we claimed him off waivers the very next day. Look fair in the bullpen and might get a shot as lefty specialist or long reliever next season. SP Cal Eldred (26 years) - 6-15, 6.50 ERA, 5.46 FIP - 178,2 IP, 222 H, 29 HR, 84 B, 122 K, 1.71 WHIP - $ 123,200 - Sometimes the ERA doesn't lie. Not sure what to do with him. AAA depth? Conversion to the bullpen? MR Scott Bankhead (31 years) - 1-2, 5.80 ERA, 4.78 FIP - 54.1 IP, 75 H, 23 BB, 36 K, 1.80 WHIP - $281,200 - Was originally a great waiver claim, but caught the "Brewers bullpen sucks" virus at some point in mid season. Totally likely non-tender candidate. MR Ricky Bones (25 years) - 3-6-1, 6.22 ERA, 6.22 FIP - 59.1 IP, 63 H, 29 BB, 29 K, 1.55 WHIP - $123,200 - Long reliever that saved the bullpen from exhaustion sometimes, but his longball tendency and inability to get strikeouts made him ineffective. MR Huck Flener (25 years) - 3-3-1, 4.24 ERA, 5.04 FIP - 46.2 IP, 53 H, 29 BB, 38 K, 1.76 WHIP - $112,000 - Another waiver claim that allowed many baserunners. But he kept them often from scoring. A keeper? MR MIke Ignasiak (28 years) - 0-2-0, 3.06 ERA, 3.35 FIP, 32.1 IP, 32 H, 12 BB, 19 K, 1.36 WHIP - $117,600 - When healthy a very effective setup man. One bad outing in september destroyed his numbers. MR Graeme Lloyd (27 years) - 6-1-7, 3.23 ERA, 3.01 FIP, 47.1 IP, 46 H, 9 BB, 33 K, 1.16 WHIP - $112,000 - Left-handed version of Ignasiak and our best reliever. Also he got destroyed by one horrible outing in september. MR Bob Scanlan (28 years) - 0-4-0, 7.76 ERA, 5.43 FIP, 31.1 IP, 46 H, 17 BB, 15 K, 2.01 WHIP - $123,200 - Excellent numbers at AAA and whenever he got called up, big league pitching destroyed him. MR Mike Timlin (28 years) - 1-2-1, 7.66 ERA, 5.10 FIP, 51.2 IP, 59 H, 33 BB, 41 K, 1.78 WHIP - $123,200 - Another waiver claim, but caught the "Brewers bullpen sucks" virus earlier than Bankhead. CL Mike Fetters (29 years) - 1-3-22, 2.25 ERA, 5.31 FIP, 36.0 IP, 28 H, 27 BB, 14 K, 1.53 WHIP - $200,000 - Somehow he's among the league leaders in Save%, but look at his numbers - he was very lucky! Back in 1995? Mike Birkbeck Sean Blanton Angel Miranda Scott Aldred Huck Flener MIke Ignasiak Graeme Lloyd Mike Fetters

1994 - Draft Preview
Our league includes historical 1st year players (more or less ready to enter the active roster) and normal rookies that have to be developed.
Our priorities are all kinds of pitching (hopefully ML ready) and CF. For the long term a good 1B and 2B prospect might not hurt either. We have a good minor league system after the trades of this summer, but almost all prospects are in the lower minors right now. |
