July 21st, 2027 The Cincinnati Reds Prepare for the Trade DeadlineName: bth_Cincinnati_Reds.png

Ok this is where we are at. We are 7 1/2 games out of the Central Division lead behind the St Louis Cardinals. We are also 3 1/2 games behind the Rockies in the Wild Card Race with the Mets and Brewers in between. The Reds are ranked 1st in Runs scored and Home Runs but are ranked 12th in Runs allowed and 12th in Starters ERA, 11th in Relievers ERA. So its clear we need pitching.

Here is where we sit with our starters.

Starters Team Age W-L ERA GS IP Whip Injured
Manny Perez Reds 24 8-7 4.88 19 114 1.33
Hubert Lucas Reds 27 6-4 5.45 19 102 1.45
Bart Whinnett Reds 26 5-5 4.29 19 98 1.27
Kevin Walsh Reds 25 1-4 6.11 13 66 1.55
Thierry Brisset Reds 30 3-4 8.31 6 52 2.00
Aus Smith Reds 33 1-0 3.86 2 28 1.61
Larry Baker Reds 32 2-1 2.49 5 21 0.83 3 weeks
Pedro Martinez AAA 24 8-5 4.29 20 121 1.39
Octavio Salazar AAA 32 4-6 7.23 18 89 1.78

Baker is still 3 weeks away, Brisset has clearly not helped us out what so ever but he has 3 years left on his contract and its gonna cost us some money to get rid of him. Martinez is an option from the farm, but we definitely need to upgrade Walsh and Brisset.

Player POS Age Team W-L ERA Whip Salary
Juanito Gonzalez SP 36 MIA 2-1 4.13 1.20 $0.7M
Manuel Campos SP 32 SEA 4-2 4.20 1.24 $1.2M
Curt Burgess SP 32 ARI 5-3 6.17 1.49 $4.0M
Freddie Garcia SP 29 OAK 5-11 5.05 1.32 $6.5M
Michael Raymond SP 30 ARI 3-5 3.68 1.43 $7.5M

There is not much help from the pending Free Agents list of Starters not on contending teams. We may have to throw some bait out their to capture a potential SP to help us out.

We have 2 very capable Catchers in Jesus Lopez and Stan Shelton. I certainly get enough offers for Shelton and this could be a possible trade bait for a starter. Plan A would be to attempt to move 1B Andrew Cooper, Roberto Cortez or Wayne Sheehan and convert Shelton to a 1B. Maybe even move a OF Cesar Bautista to get that other SP we need or prospect OF Steve Garc who is AAA.

The next 10 days should prove interesting.

This. is. awesome.

I was on the fence about buying OOTP, but reading through this dynasty made me regret not pre-ordering it. I will be buying it on Monday!

As previously mentioned, the Reds need to focus on improving the pitching, especially the starting pitching. Currently our rotation looks like this after the trades.

Rotation
1 Bart Whinnett RHP
2 Manny Perez LHP
3 Manuel Campos RHP
4 Hubert Lucas RHP
5 Jorge Carranza LHP

We do have Larry Baker back in 2-3 weeks so he can give us a boost for the final 5-6 weeks.

With Larry Baker coming back in 2 weeks, we can wait to see what Pedro Martinez can do in September for 40 man roster expansion. I am surprised that Mgr Wagsis is not giving Aus Smith any starts, but he can add experience as a 6th starter or long relief.

Time to see what Jack Gunther and Kent Bell can do in the Majors and maybe John Bayley and Ramon Rodriquez can get better in AAA. We will swap out the 2 relievers for Bell and Gunther to start the final 2 months.

May have the best 1-2 punch at Catcher then any other team in the Majors. Either Shelton will get traded at the end of the season or we will convert to 1B so he can get some more at bats.

To balance out the positions, I am sending Steve Garc back to AAA and will promote INF Roberto Cortez. Anderson is on pace for another 50 HR season, will Quinones could reach a career high in HRs, his previous high was 33 in 2024 with the Rangers.

16th Alex Perez AAA 22 2-4 7.04 0 30 1.63
45th George Wheeler AA 24 4-1 4.34 12 66 1.27

Perez is struggling a little in AAA, but he does have 12 saves and will get a couple more years of AAA before he even is Rule 5 eligible, so we can be patient. Wheeler is already on the 40 man roster and with 2 options left, still has time to develop, I hope he gets some AAA time again this year, he does have 11 career (2026-27) AAA starts going 1-6 with a 8.37 ERA and 1.80 Whip. (ouch)

Hitting Prospects Team Age AB HR RBI AVG OPS Injured
27th Roberto Gonzales AAA 24 327 13 63 0.278 0.879
41st Vicente Hernandez AAA 23 119 1 17 0.361 0.845 4 weeks

Roberto Gonzales is currently in his 1st year of AAA, he could be added to the 40 man roster at the end of the season, but he is still another year away from Rule 5 eligibility. Hernandez broke his hand in May and should be back in the line-up by the end of August. He has had AAA success over the past since 2025 and still has a couple of option years left to make it to the bigs.

^That was a rough week. How are your players' fielding abilities? I wonder if that is part of the problem.

Thanks for reading, My fielder's ratings are pretty good, 4 out 5 for most of the starters at every position. We simply give up way to many HRs. This is my 17th season in this dynasty, I currently have a 5.08 ERA for my staff, only twice have I ended up with ERA's in the 5.00+. (5.16 in 2017 and 5.08 in 2011) My average ERA in those seasons was 4.52...

We will get Larry Baker back and that should improve our staff, but your right.... a rough week.

Well the Reds are not mathematically eliminated in the NL Central, the Cardinals magic number on the Reds is 4 with 90 wins being the most the Reds can get.. In the Wild Card, it appears it will be won with about 91 wins so the Reds would have to go 20-1 in their final 21 games.
