The way you play?
Just wanted to see how many people I could get to chime in on this...
How do you guys play the game/sim the game/manage the game to make it fun? What drives your addiction factor and keeps you craving more and wanting to play? I am in my first season in mid-January and its starting to get repetitive already... sim day, read email, repeat. I feel like there isn't much to it besides repeating those steps. I don't like trading all season long either; I play with a more "realistic" approach. So fyi I am not knocking the game in the least bit but I am having a hard time getting into it... However when I come here on the forums and real all the discussion I get so exited to play and then when I do it fades quick. Not sure if its due to all the bugs and limitations at this point or what? I am such a huge hockey junkie and just need that "spark" to make this game worth diving into! |

I take a team and rebuild it.
I'm a Montreal Canadiens guy myself but I decided to take Calgary and see if I could do a better job then Feaster (like thats hard). I typically like to trade away and do a proper rebuild while improving my scouting and player development. You have to like simulators, the addiction part is seeing the fruits of your labors whether it is a player producing well, making others around him better, or a draft pick panning out which you had scouted many times before, or landing a huge trade putting your team at a huge advantage. That is all besides winning the Stanley cup. If you are bored however challenge yourself by taking a Jr or AHL team, different feel but I love it either way. |

My fun is normally in drafting, trading, signing players, and reassigning them. I like to build my team the way I want and then let the "coach" do their job...with the exception of the odd demand or two. I also really enjoy looking at teams like a business. Taking a bleeding team with minimal budget and turning them into a money maker...sometimes Stanley Cups or championships don't matter as long as we're making money. But of course winning is always to shortcut to the green.
When I play ootp, another aspect is introduced and that's not just making money for my team, but bigger picture, growing leagues, competing leagues, and even national programs. I like to grow and evolve my fictional and modern day world in many different ways to even bigger heights and I hope for one day the full ability to do so here with that sort of depth...ootp has ignored many of these aspects for quite some time so really I dream of FHM building on it and setting a precedent. Until then, I would love to grow the game in the modern day world, rebuild or build nations hockey programs to superpower...once that becomes more dynamic and present in the game I will be living the dream. I would love for FHM to be classified as a Hockey Business simulation instead of just a hockey sim. Grow your team: your league: your world. But of course my mind runs wild with this. But maybe one day...

Thanks for both of your responses so far! I do like simulators, I love looking at histories and seeing the numbers that are put up each year by players. I like the idea of taking young players and "grooming" them so to speak.
As stated by Dave, I like to draft, trade, sign, resign etc. I just dont make unrealistic amounts of trades per year where it becomes far fetched. I agree again Dave with turning a "real life" NHL starting off in a modern day into your own evolved league. I think expanding and contrasting and franchise relocation and everything of that nature would be extremely fun. I am just having a hard time for some reason at this point in time getting sucked into this game. Playing/watching the games is very boring with no 2D engine or a large vocabulary of sentences to make the games feel unique... so I feel as if I am just simming a day, checking the box score, checking the emails, simming a day. This is not a bash or criticism, I think the game is going to be one hell of a game after is polished and it grows I just cannot figure out whats causing me to not become as attached as I hoped or planned. |

Fictional sim guy myself in OOTP and will be in FHM when I buy it soon. I love seeing my younger players develop and grow into stars.

I'm hawks fan... but I prefer to select a weaker team and try to build the franchise, and of course eventually win the big one.

I stopped playing because of the penalty timer freezing up.
I want to play mostly custom leagues. I want to start a North American Junior Hockey League with 2 28-team conferences, but that's currently not available. When the game starts playing properly,i will get more involved with player movement, etc. |

I do Like Season replays, and in them will trade and draft a little.
But my real passion is in the Fictional (From OOTP BB) - I want to build a team and see how it does without having any expectations of real names. (LOL - So far I really stick at it)

Fictional here, too. I love to create my own universe and just watch it unfold. I have already set myself up to do a diary/story about a fictional league in a rather unique style (I guess/hope), but that obviously has to wait until the custom mode works.

Looks like a lot of us have the same type of ideas...
I really want to start at present day NHL... but I want to be able to relocate teams, fold teams, have an expansion to 32 teams... update names/logos/locations and watch everything unfold... so after years and years it will be "real life' with my own "fictional twist" as I want to be the GM of a given team and obviously be the "NHL Commissioner"... but everything at this point is so limited and I cannot do much... As stated in other threads and posts the game just isn't to enjoyable at version 1.0, as it gets boring pretty fast. I never played OOTP* and I am seriously considering purchasing it and seeing if I can indulge deeply into that! ![]() *I have played iOOTP but it obviously is nothing like its Mac/PC counterpart... |

Playing as the Winnipeg Jets. I like to sign some young talent and shed some of my veteran players and then develop my team. Acquired Nathan MacKinnon and Adam Henrique every time I have played and both do a great job for me.
